Would you sign him for six years? He's 32 in December.
Probably not, but 3 to 5 yrs maybe. If he wants 6 or 7 yrs than the owner would have to make a decision whether he will want to lose that money in his later yrs if Tarasenko falls off the wagon which I doubt Abdlauer could afford to sustain. At the moment Tarasenko is way ahead of Kubalik in most fans minds, but if they were to move Kubalik to make room for Pinto & can't afford to re-sign Tarasenko they would lose two goal scorers. Maybe wth the return of Pinto & Norris for next season they will be able to withstand the loss, but it would be better to retain at least one, although there could be a few more prospects that are NHl ready for next yr too. However, it will take them a while to get where the two veterans are already. Another tough call & problem to have.

This is your idea of a compliment? That explains a lot!

I think I’ve been misunderstanding you for a long time my friend :)
He played a great game. He did what he had to do. He played within what the team was trying to do and as a result we dominated a really good hockey team.

He's the kind of guy who will fall off the cliff rapidly when it happens IMO.

Huge caution signs about long-term contracts with him.

He's not speedy at the best of times, and I'm not sure he has the shiftiness and hockey IQ of an Alfredsson or a Giroux who can perform late into their 30s.

In any event, we have a sample of 3 games at the moment, with one mediocre game against good competition and two better ones against poor competition.
Is TB now poor competition? We're moving on up in the world!!

In their current state.

Hope it stays that way.
I was at that game last night. Kinda similar to the Philly game.... we're dominating but it's half way thru and it's tight. We've found a way to lose those games for years. That was a solid solid game last night. We were better start to finish

I dont think they are poor competition but they do lack offensive depth due to being so successful for so long. Losing Killorn hurts. So missing a player like Stamkos on top of that has a huge ripple effect especially on their PP. They are also a veteran team that I expect will get going. They are a really good home team, werent very good on the road last year either. Vasilevsky is playing and they arent letting in 4 last night I dont think either so who knows. Anyone writing them off is going to look silly.

Tbay was awful to finish the season last year, we actually had a better record than them.

Without Vasilevsky or Stamkos, I don't think they are a great team,

Now to be fair, we're missing Norris and Pinto so it's not like we had a full lineup either.

Without 2 of their 4 best players and after getting hit with the inevitable cap crunch resulting in losing key pieces, probably.

Realistically thought if Stamkos is in the lineup and they have good goaltending they will still be a good matchup.

To add:

As someone with young children, Ottawa is an INCREDIBLE city, and I think he is seeing it having young children himself.

We are so lucky to have a hospital like CHEO here and a place like Rogers House.

If we are lucky enough to have a mild winter, I think he might extend here.

The problem is that he may price himself out of Ottawa. It really depends on who they want to prioritize keeping. If he goes point-per-game with his current usage, he's probably a 6M player minimum. 7M if GMs go nuts this summer due to the cap going up.

I still do not think I would want him on the rumoured 5 year 5.5M contract, but it doesn't look as bad as it looked at the time. At least in the shorter term.

The Senators have 12.7M next year with 17 players already on the roster. Brannstrom probably won't be qualified. Kubalik likely doesn't stay. Let's say Pinto takes 2.5M (might be less at this point). That would give the Senators over 10 million with 18 players already signed. In the worst case scenario where the Senators are out of it enough at the deadline to trade Tarasenko, maybe they could convince him to come back July 1st on an inflated 1 year contract. 1 year at 8M+, that would still leave them enough space to get up to a 21 player roster.

If he wants to sign 2-3 years then it's a no brainer imo. I have a feeling he'll want a longer deal to see out his career.

I think it is AAV as much as term. I would guess the issue with Dorion's 5 x 5.5M offer was that it was on a Canadian team, and the AAV was low. Look at players like Palat and Killorn signing for 6M+, and then someone like Pavelski getting 7M a few years ago. Tarasenko isn't quite as old as Tarasenko/Giroux/Marleau types, and those players got near 7M.

7M-8M on a 3-4 year term is probably what he is looking for. If you look at what Killorn and Palat got last year, that would be slightly higher but the cap is also higher and in this scenario Tarasenko would be a PPG player.
