Would the jays get a comp pick if he signed somewhere else?
Assuming we extend him a qualifying offer, which we can and will, then yes, we do.

We could likely trade him at the deadline for a prospect even better than the comp pick next year, but I would rather they push for the wild card and then try to keep him for 3-4 years.

I'm not positive, but I think they can. The rules are that you get a Comp pick if you give the player a QO and he rejects it and signs elsewhere, but players can also only get a QO once in their career. If a player has had a QO before, regardless of what happens with it and that player in free agency, they can't be offered one again.

From what I read, the A's chose not to offer him one last off-season so he's likely still eligible and almost certain to reject the offer when the Jays give it to him.

So based on that we would get a compensation pick provided the Jays submit a qualifying offer and another team signs him. And based on the Jays' financial state they would get a pick in the "B" compensation round.

Sweet. Thanks for the info.

Well, nothing too crazy in the draft yet. Some different orders, but all these guys are in the same tier. Don't think we will see any too off the board picks in the top 10 or 12, but I could see teams reaching a bit after that.
