It's sad to think Taijuan Walker could be leading our pitchers in WAR right now while making only 7.3 million a year, and we didn't even offer him a contract, so far as I can tell.

I would be quite surprised if Walker kept his current level of performance up. He seems to be relying heavily on a lack of homers against, which might make sense given his sinker usage is as high as it's ever been at 25.5% and he pitches at Citi Field. However, I wouldn't trust that HR/FB rate of just 7.1% to hold and if those homers start coming, his ERA could spike quickly with that 9.3% walk rate. For comparisons sake, rWAR has Walker at 1.4, Ray at 3.7, and Ryu at 2.5. That is an assessment that I agree with more than fWAR, which has Walker at 2.2, Ray at 1.8, and Ryu at 1.3. I will stop myself there before I go on a tangent about solo homers.

I appreciated the job that Walker did for the Blue Jays and the passion he showed for the team and the city (without even playing in it). But, I was more than okay with letting him go to the Mets over what is essentially a three year deal. He had only started 15 total games in the three seasons prior to this one so he was (and still is) a very risky player on a multi-year deal. If he stays healthy then that's great for Walker and the Mets and I would still be fine with not having taken the risk on him remaining healthy.

I was under the impression that he was asking for way more money based on tweets I saw posted here, like double term and dollars and the Jays understandably balked.

I think the issue was term and not money.

Yeah, this "never even offered him a contract" stuff always comes out when the Jays don't sign guys and it rarely makes any sense. We rehashed this a million times when Price left, but if you have preliminary talks and you're not close to being on the same page (like... you're $50+ million apart on Price or you're only willing to commit one year to a guy with a long injury history who's insisting he won't settle for anything less than three years) why would there be a contract offer at any point?

Letting Walker walk away was a big mistake from the Jays. He easily would have accepted a 3 year deal at a 8 million salary to remain here. Why this wasnt done I dont know. He was loved in the clubhouse and found a pitching coach in Walker that worked well with him.

Regardless of how it looks right now, it should be easy to figure out why the Jays were hesitant to commit three years to him.

They didn’t come to an agreement and most of us were very comfortable with them not going three years with him. We all would have been happy to have him back but I like others wasn’t interested in a the gamble of three years. He’s having a great year which makes it seem like a bad decision at the moment. That’s just how it goes sometimes

2021 MLB Draft Tracker

Sportrac reporting that the Jays signed their 13th round pick Matt Svanson and their 18th round pick Jimmy Burnette to identical $50,000 deals.

Jays only have the following players to sign;

Damiano Palmegiani (14)
Micah Bucknam (16)
Cooper Benson (17)
Juan Gonzalez (19)
Luke Holman (20)

Benson should sign. Palmegiani and Gonzlaez could be tougher signs but they should be locked up. Bucknam could be 50/50 and the Jays dont have a shot at Holman.

so is this just cash or will it be ifa spending money or something to allocate to draft funds... been reading alot on the next draft and it seems a lot of the industry are calling it a bottomless pit of talent

I'm guessing just cash. Otherwise they probably would have announced it as "International Slot Money" or whatever.

You can’t trade draft dollars. Teams with a competitive balance pick can trade those and that’s rare. You can trade international spending dollars but they would announce it as such. In this case it’s likely 50 grand or something like that. They never announce the dollars. Essentially they just sold him for a roster spot kind of thing. Really common thing to do

My favourite example of a team actually announcing the exact dollar amount was February 28:
