Hiraldo and Martinez just went back to back. Two homers for Martinez today.

Kirk, Groshans, Martin and Moreno are the 2nd wave.

Hiraldo and Martinez are the 3rd wave. We will see who joins them. Jimenez, Castr0, Machado, Beltre?

Interesting. So apparently Dolis was pitching the last little while with no feeling in his fingers and he didn't tell anyone about it. I knew he was DL'd because of an injury, but didn't realize he's been pitching this whole time with numb fingers.

Frankly, that was awfully selfish of him. SO MANY GAMES were lost because of him. Even if he comes backs throwing fireballs, he should be cut. He was not thinking about the team at all.

Bowden Francis might be getting his first start tonight for Buffalo. Was added to the roster yesterday and tonight's starter is TBD but the next 4 games all have been announced.

Frabncis went 5 innings, 4 K, 3 BB, 4 hits, 2 runs only 1 earned

You seem to have missed the point here.

What point is missed? The US and UK have been holding sporting events for months with limited capacity with far worse case counts than Canada.

If we all believe that the border lockdown and not giving the ability for our teams to play in Canada is the reason for our low case count. Then we are all very brain washed and the government has succeeded in scaring us into our bubble.

Enough is enough, citizens need to grow a spine. Has our case count in York region increased over the past month where tens of thousands of people gathered in close proximity without masks celebrating soccer nation wins? Our cases have continued to go lower. What about Montreal and their fans in the streets in thousands!!!

Its a farce and we are allowing the government to control our lives. Put measures in place to ensure those entering the stadium are following regulations. Take temperature checks and ensure spacing is between ticket purchases for seating. No reason at all that sports cannot come back.

We just had an NFL season in the middle of the worst times with this pandemic with minimal cases being related to the games itself. We had hockey in the US played in 75% capacity stadiums with no cases traced back. All these sporting events had measures that needed to be followed and they were.

Canada is a joke if they dont allow this. They have allowed large assemblies until now for outcomes of sporting events, with no backlash or uptick in COVID cases.

Edit: Nevermind. These conversations always go the same way and are never worth it.

Go Jays, though!

The point of those links was that case counts in areas allowing those events have been rising again recently. That's not to say it can't be done safely - I believe it can and should - but using them as an example and saying "They're doing it, so we should too!" while ignoring the trends in those countries is just stupid.

Have trends in those countries been factually correlated to the sporting events? I really do not believe so. Sport teams have done everything in their power to ensure players are tested with regularity, and have strict measures and fines for those that dont follow protocol. They have probably been the most diligent along with their corresponding leagues to enforce measures and isolate where need be. Yes there have been some teams hit hard through this pandemic, but when you look at the amount of sporting leagues and the amount of teams impacted, it is very minimal.

Case counts in a country cannot be the deciding factor for allowing certain things to open or not. Unless they have evidence that these events are causing the outbreak, life should go on.

What is ironic is that we have our teams playing in the US where it is worse than Canada (much worse), with little problems to the teams themselves. Basically Canada has ponded off our sport teams to the US which is disgusting in my eyes. Horrible.

Feel like could have a greatest hits collection scrolling through the archives on this one. Tough call between Bauer/Price (both bad) and not signing Barry Bonds in 2008 (which would have been very good).

I think this would apply to a whole lot of starters this offseason for pretty much everyone here. I would have loved to take that risk on Paxton, for example, but $8.5 million for ~20 pitches is probably a bit steep.

I didn’t want it but that Jose Bautista contract he wanted would have been an absolute nightmare.

This is what happens when there's no games for 5 days...

Speaking of which. When or why did they add another day to the All-Star Break? Before, the day after the All-Star Game was the only day when there was no pro sports in a calendar year. Now the Thursdays after don't have any games scheduled either, and haven't for a couple years now at least.

EDIT: And of course just after I post that, I check the TSN website and it says the Yankees and Red Sox kick off the second half of the season as the only game tonight.

I believe alot of it has to do with the Collective Bargaining agreement from a player perspective ask. Travel for players attending\participating in All-Star weekend doesnt really give them a break as the others are receiving.

I personally dont have an issue with it. Its only fair.

Yeah the last CBA (or the one before it) mandated Mon-Thurs as the break.

...although apparently the Yankees and Red Sox are playing tonight so ???

Doesnt surprise me that MLB asked 2 of the largest markets to open the 2nd half. Doesnt surprise me they agreed considering they will be the only sport on the tube in North America. All about the lime light for those clubs

I didn’t want it but that Jose Bautista contract he wanted would have been an absolute nightmare.

I think there was only one person who actually wanted that to happen, and I don't think he would qualify for this exercise because he would never admit that it would have been a poor decision. Plus, his argument would always be "Who cares, just spend more" anyway, which is... something.

But man, imagine not being able to sign Springer or Semien (or probably Ryu, too) because you still owed Bautista and Encarnacion $60 million in 2021? Gross.

It isn’t fatal and I understand why they did it because they were expecting a breakout but the Grichuk contract was absolutely not needed at all. When he signed the contract he had 2 full years of control left. If the Jays didn’t sign him he would have been a free agent this past offseason and we would have had another $10M to spend this offseason and the next 2 years.

Doesn’t seem big in the grand scheme of things but that might be the difference in landing Brantley (no need to move Grichuk) and say Walker. That’s an extra 3-4 WAR on this team.

Avoiding long term deals with Bautista and Edwin was key. Donaldson would have worked out if he signed the 3 year extension because this season or last would have been his last year. I didn’t want Price for the deal he got but it seemed like he worked out for Boston. Same with Wheeler. Dead set against him because of his injury history and I think he is only behind de Grom in pitching WAR.

Just get the 2 of them together and work it out is what I remember (EE, JB)

I remember that too. Something along the lines of “pull them in a room, tell them the budget you have and have them determine the allocation to get them to stay”

Excellent negotiation tactics especially since you had a need for 1 starter, pen arms, a LF, backup catcher, a middle infield to cover for the oft injured Tulo and Travis, all while running the moves by Stroman for his approval.

Here's an ugly one: I won't say I necessarily wanted it to happen, but I was intrigued by the idea of adding Chris Davis when he was a free agent.

Now, in my defence, this was when I thought he would get something like 3 years and $60 million dollars and before Baltimore got into a vicious bidding war against themselves and ultimately gave Davis everything he was asking for despite him having no other serious suitors in the market... but still... I loved the idea of adding a guy coming off a 149 wRC+ as a lefty bat in the middle of all the killer righties.

Oh yeah. That was a bad one. I wanted the Jays to grab Chris Davis or Mike Napoli AND Matt Wieters.

Imagine those two still trying to play. Yikes. EE would be done though already I believe. The mystery man really wanted all the big ufa s every year. But only remembers the ones that might have worked
