Looks like I will list my credentials here anyway (keep in mind that the grades are on the 4.3 scale):

Undergraduate GPA: 3.67
Graduate GPA: 3.80
GRE: V162, Q167, AW4.0, Physics: 910
Research experience: 1 year in particle cosmology (no publications yet)

Gopher hockey tickets are a must.

U of M campus is also right by downtown Minneapolis, which has tons to do. I'm obviously biased, but I think it's a great school, loved my time there.

For undergrad or for an advanced degree?

I knew at the onset that no UMinn experience is complete without a Gophers hockey game if one is a hockey fan, though.

Maybe it's just me, but I think summer is the time to leave the city or town you live in and go fishing or camping or whatever when the weather allows.

I'll go shopping at a mall or try restaurants when the winter comes back and I don't feel like being outside much.

I dunno, there's plenty of great stuff to do outside in the Cities in the summer. You can catch a train to Minnehaha Falls, check out the statue gardens and mini-golf, go to outdoor concerts and festivals, walk around Uptown instead of a mall, or just hit a nice lakeside beach. Honestly MSP might be the best cities in the country for getting out and being active in the summer without having to leave the city limits.

No doubt there is a bunch of great lakes and parks to visit right in MSP, but I'm more of an open country and big lake guy. I also hate traffic with a passion. Like I said probably just me. :)

I drove through Atlanta once and survived. Strange feeling, doing 80 in a 55 just to keep pace with traffic, and a cop passes you and just doesn't give a ****.

Oh god yeah, the South is the worst for crazy drivers, no doubt. The "Alabama Autobahn" was pretty nerve-wracking. I swear they all think it's a competition to see who can cut the closest to you when they pass you (at 15 over, with no blinker).

SF drivers actually aren't that bad, it's just the congestion that gets you. Rush Hour is really more like Rush Three Hours.

And hey, if you want both the worst congestion and insanely aggressive drivers, there's always LA.

Flying out to visit family Tuesday morning. Excited.

Any ideas on things to do? This is my 3rd year in a row now to see family during summer, and we've done lots of things. Lacking ideas.

Any ideas of cheap but decent hotel? Or does anyone want to house me in exchange for money for a couple of days in October/November?

I'm exactly like that, I will be spending most of my time at the Xcel/bars/wherever. I get to "enjoy" hotels too much when on work trips.

The microtel is definitely something worth checking out then. Although you may want something closer to St. Paul if you're planning on spending more time over there.

season opener pre game festivities?

Dose anyone know if there will be pre game festivities on Oct 9th?I know that in past years there's been pep rally's and such at rice park or along Kellogg.

And hey, if you want both the worst congestion and insanely aggressive drivers, there's always NYC.

Fixed for you. Drivers in metro NYC area are just as crazy; my sister said "Thank God we weren't visiting Columbia!" (although Columbia didn't show up on my application list until after the trip)

I have driven through Philadelphia downtown, which, compared to NYC, isn't as bad. I sure hope MSP is not that horrible as far as traffic is concerned.

That is, if my only acceptance was UMinn, I would have to move in somewhere near downtown Minneapolis, since the campus where my lab will be is near downtown Minneapolis. Speaking of downtown Minneapolis, I hope isn't overly expensive for 2-4 graduate students to rent as roommates with an equitable share of the cost.

MSP drivers aren't bad at all. My only complaint is that they can be a little too passive, but that still beats too aggressive. Traffic is pretty light, except for during winter storms and rush hour. Even rush hour traffic isn't bad like it is in other places, and rush hour is a relatively short window.

The Cities have a relatively low cost of living. Especially if you're splitting it 2-4 ways it should be very, very reasonable, and very easy to find a place. That said, I wouldn't live downtown--there are neighborhoods across the river that are much cheaper and more fun, as well as closer to the U. Northeast and Dinkytown are both great neighborhoods for student-aged-people. I imagine some of the other neighborhoods east of the U along University are perking up too thanks to the new light rail.

I'm thinking of visiting and/or even going to school far away from home (Finland) and was thinking Minnesota would be the place for me. I'm a hockey fanatic / home expert / player on a low level here in Finland, and a big, big fan of the Wild. I know there is alot of universities with great hockey programs, but I only can name one (Gophers, University of Minnesota), so what are the other great programs in Minnesota? And is there any low-level or high-level high-schools around that offers playing hockey? (In Finland schools have nothing to do with sport teams, so really dont know how to call that relationship there.. :D) And playing hockey would be the thing if I get myself there while still being a highschooler, or am I going to study in some Uni and get some work with the universitys hockey team? Is it impossible to get something for me with the hockey team? I have studied coaching and other hockey "stuff" here in Finland, so getting would a scouts spot for example the U of Minnesota -team be much of a longshot? Or do you know any other jobs / free time activities an exchange student would be getting with a Uni or highschool team? With hockey experience of course?

The text is kind of a cluster*****, so ask me if I it was hard to understand. :D

There are 5 schools in Minnesota that have D-1 hockey: University of Minnesota, UMD (University of Minnesota-Duluth), Bemidji State, Saint Cloud State, and Mankato (whatever they are calling themselves these days, I think it's technically 'Minnesota State University-Mankato')
