It will be interesting to see what takes shape on or after July 1.
Patrick Kane's production trails off around 33. In an eight-year deal for Marner, years 6-8 are likely a sharp drop-off.
In a four-year deal, they might be justifiable, provided Morgan Reilly is moved. In that instance, we enter a scenario that doesn't see: Bennett and Ehlers coming in for Marner's money. We likely see a deal that brings in Marner and Bennett for Reilly's offset. The latter is more palatable to me. At the end of the day in that model, we're talking a difference of about a million in an ideal situation. That is:
Would we sign Marner to $12M? Yes. Do we want to lose him for a $1M more? Likely no. Moreover, when considering Ehlers is a quarter the player Marner is in the playoffs.
Just need to irrationally vent on my memo to acquire Zetterlund, seeing he went less than for what Laughton was acquired for but would be a Knies type insertion for less than what Knies is about to make.
