Amazing this guy Alan Muir gets paid to write about the NHL.

http://nhl.si.com/2013/07/02/report-vincent-lecavalier-to-sign-with-philadelphia-flyers/

Someone needs to check with Paul Holmgren and make sure he got that memo about the salary cap going down next season.

You have to assume Philadelphia’s GM either missed it or isn’t very strong at math after sources began reporting that he had signed free agent forward Vincent Lecavalier to a five-year, $22.5 million deal (not $23.5 as Panaccio first reported).

Lecavalier hit the market last week when Tampa Bay used one of its two compliance buyouts to cut ties with their former captain. He instantly became a hot commodity among teams looking to add some sizzle to their offense. After interviewing with nearly a dozen teams over the draft weekend, including Detroit, Boston, Dallas and Calgary, it appears he’s settled on the Flyers.

The deal makes sense for Vinny. A $4.5 million average makes for a nice payday, especially on top of Tampa’s free money, and he’ll play with quality wingers (maybe Wayne Simmonds and Brayden Schenn) on a team that should rebound from last season’s debacle as long as the defense stays healthy.

But for the Flyers? Did Holmgren discover some sort of loophole in the CBA that allows them to ignore the cap? Before the deal, the Flyers had about $4.2 million worth of space for next season. This deal puts them over the line…right after they dug themselves out of cap hell by buying out Daniel Briere and Ilya Bryzgalov. Capgeek estimates the Flyers will be $318,000 over the salary cap. And they still have to find a legitimate replacement for Bryz.

I don’t know anymore. Maybe Holmgren’s just smarter than the rest of us.

Just ordered my jersey from Meigray. They still have the white for someone interested. All it takes is a name plate change.

http://www.meigray.com/edealinv/ser...evel=&oldParentID=&catParentID=4546&scId=4546

Hate quoting myself but you can get it done at the skate zone's for $20. At least they did it for that when I had my Read jersey get a name plate change. It's really easy.

The jerseys on Meigray are the real deal jerseys that they wear on the ice. They released some of the Edge 2.0's at retail this year but cost $300 and that was just blank.

You know what, since you brought that up, since I have a decent job now, I might actually buy an actual jersey . Haven't had a new one since like 2004 or something like that.

I think one is gone for cap & room.

Your top 6 no longer can have mesz and coburn in it.

schenn/streit
timonen/coburn &/or Mesz
gross/gus

Mez and Coburn are not interchangeable so if one is going for salary reasons it's Mez. Regardless that wasn't the point I was making. Tim said someone had to go cause the team can't fit Vinny's cap hit which simply isn't true and you'd think being a Flyers "insider" he should know that.

You also have to compare them to the competition...not just look at them in a vacuum. I don't know ...I would like to think they are a playoff team too but in this league with so much parity a lot of things have to go right. We shall see. Meanwhile we were more injured than everyone but really Detroit and basically tied with Ottawa. Those Man-games Lost don't include Pronger, for all those curious.

So we were injured all season, couldn't score at even strength, couldn't outlet the puck, but the only reason we weren't a playoff team was because of Bryzgalov.

Our battered defense had nothing to do with it. Our inconsistent offense had nothing to do with it. ****, Coburn's regression had nothing to do with it.

So yes, we are easily a playoff team in 2013-14 barring anything ridiculous happening.

Wow..I know Bryz was the whipping boy for most of us and with lots of good reason but I wouldn't go so far as to say it was all on Bryz as far as playoffs....

That's a bit much...

We did have a coach that couldn't adjust to tight checking teams as well...also lost discipline on the bench with line changes (too many men infractions) and the lineup changes were even wacky. Moreover, like Hartnell noted..the team was confused by the new system for most of the shortened season.

No...

This is what's extreme...

Man-games Lost: 314 (3rd)
PK%: 85.9 (5th)
SA/G: 28.6 (12th)
Hits: 1316 (5th)
Blocked Shots: 784 (3rd)

Bryzgalov SV%: 0.900 (43rd/50)

The only thing not factored is quality of the shots. But to quantify that is kind of a ***** (unless there are numbers somewhere?).

Appleyard (I believe) crunched the numbers and showed that if Bryz had made one big save every 5 games...or conversely, allowed one less crap goal in every 5 games...the Flyers would have been a PO team. THe offense was good enough, the defense was good enough. The goaltending, not so much.

The only thing not factored is quality of the shots. But to quantify that is kind of a ***** (unless there are numbers somewhere?).

Someone did a proof a while ago that Scoring Chances are directly linked proportionally with the number of shots. Though the NHL does not keep viable records of "Scoring Chances," someone once was kind enough to do so and break down the proof.

So less shots on goal is directly proportional to less scoring chances.

Also, more fun facts...

Among defensemen that played 30+ games...

SCHENN CORSI QoC: 1.320 (18th)
TIMONEN CORSI QoC: 1.279 (21st)
COBURN CORSI QoC: 0.773 (41st)
GROSSMANN CORSI QoC: 0.767 (42nd)

Coburn and Grossmann were both in the top 30 until the second half of the season when both obviously took a significant nose-dive. So we had four defensemen, for most of the season, in the top 30 of all NHL blueliners defensively.

Meanwhile among forwards that played 30+ games...

COUTURIER CORSI QoC: 1.936 (16th)
SCHENN CORSI QoC: 1.535 (29th)
GIROUX CORSI QoC: 1.184 (49th)

We've been over this many times in the Bryz thread. There is a strong correlation between scoring chances and shots allowed. There isn't some weird fluke where teams that are limiting shots are allowing more high quality shots than other teams. Bryz simply sucked.

I would be curious to see these "analytics.."

I'm trying to keep an open mind..sounds plausible. I mean I'm not Bryz's biggest fan and he did make too many excuses. I guess I have trouble just pinning something on one factor even if it is a considerable one and seems legit on it's face...

I really don't understand why people think that homer just isn't aware of the salary cap. As much as people like to complain about him and other fans like to make fun of him, the man is not a moron. He obviously knows how to run a team, I'm sure he's more than aware of the teams salary cap position and I'm confident he has a plan to fix it.

Bryz looked terrible when it came down to odd man rushes, and screens. Literally one of the worst goalies I have seen on either. Essentially, for Bryz to be adequate, he needs clear shots from the blue line or side boards. Anything else and he is ****ed. That doesn't sound like a starting goalie in any league, at least not one I would want to throw money at.
