I agree in principle, but the marketplace drives these decisions. There'd be incentive to innovate from "Far Cry 47" and "Skyrim in Space" if these new titles didn't sell like hotcakes. People can bitch all they want about the experience after the fact, but the lukewarm reaction to Primal didn't stop FC5 from selling like mad, and Fallout 76 was barely a speedbump. There are lowpoints in any franchise, but the tentpole releases have always been commercial successes. Once that starts to wane, they'll start really innovating again.

They should start to wane...right about...now. Honestly, I've had my fill of AC games. AC Odyssey was the pinnacle of the franchise for me, AC Valhalla had just enough for me (eg. the gorgeous English countryside) to sustain my interest, but I just don't have the stomach for another AC game at this point. Its almost like being full at an all-you-can-eat buffet -- if I have another bite I'll throw up.

Meh, I think they just need to switch it up. The last 3 have been RPGlite, and frankly not fun compared to AC2-Revelations and AC4. Going back to that formula is what's needed. Mirage is a step towards that fortunately.

I will say, what lost me was the move to combo combat. The best part of Assassin's Creed was that you were supposed to play sneaky but when the shit hit the fan you were still almost one-hit lethal, the thing was to clear what you could with finesse and then get the hell out.

Valhalla was a RB-fest where you just altered regular and power attacks and your weapons made all the difference, outside of the built skills.

I miss Black Flag and being on the deck of a ship just gracefully ripping through people. The path forward that keeps it unique is not making it AC: Dark Souls.

TBH there is nothing wrong doing similar game every year with lighty difference. Ask EA or Activision who make billions every year on basically same game. I really liked ac odyssey, half arcade (fast killng), half RPG (good quests) and great visuals. Only thing I hate in AC series, is that world is empty for most of the part, but maybe its engine related problem.

I liked Odyssey a lot more than Valhalla, and I thought it was a slightly more filled world. At least your magic powers were explained by being basically magic powers.

Valhalla also got way too repetitive clearing territories, bored me enough that I couldn't finish, but I ate up Odyssey and hit the end at a good pace.

Agree with of this. Its a shame because Valhalla was a GORGEOUS game. Would love to see an RPG fantasy game in a Valhalla setting.

Just finished Horizon Forbidden West. Very good game:

+ The skill tree, a major weakness of HZD, is a major strength of this game. Ranged Master and Radial Blast were my favorite valor surges, Braced Shot was my favorite skill.
+ Side Quests were really beefy in this game, all of them short stories in of themselves.
+ Relic Ruins were a blast. Fun diversion when you weren't questing.

- annoying that you couldn't cycle through Valor Surges. You had to access the skill tree menu every time.
- a great game no doubt, but after 2 months of playing (weekends only), there was a "more of the
sameness" malaise that set it. I completed the main quest, all the side quests, and all the relic ruins, and that was enough for me. I didn't go full completionist like I have with some games in the past.

Overall, a great game though. 8 out 10 for me.

I put in probably 90-100 hours into Odyssey until I rage quit after getting to Atlantis, finishing the four challenges of Atlantis, and being prompted to pay $30 to have the mystery revealed. Awesome game besides that but I wanted to throw my controller across the room.

Valhalla is fun but such a slog. I hear Mirage is only 20 hours to complete and gets back to the roots of the original AC games. May check that out at some point.

HFW is one of my favorites but I feel the exact same as you. I did all of the main and side quests and then lost all interest in it when I was trying to get the Platinum trophy. I bought the Burning Shores DLC but haven’t had the itch to play it yet. When I get bored of a game it’s tough for me to ever go back to it but I’ll probably get to Burning Shores at some point.

If you had been able to cycle quickly through your valor surges it would have been a sweet, sweet game.

I bought FC24 and haven't even fired it up. I think my video gaming days might be over.

Is there a pill for this?

I literally typed out this same message last week and deleted it. I said I just couldn’t get into any game any more and I might be done with video games for a while. This sucks.

Think I’m going to put the sticks down for a bit and wait until I get the desire to play something instead of trying to force it. It’ll come back (I hope).

Guys, it's a common problem of many gamers at some point in life. Idk the right treatment, unfortunately, but try this.
1) Get rest from games, but keep tracking news and new titles, at some point, you might be too interested to start again
2) Try small indie games. Big games are time-consuming and you don't get an accomplishment feeling soon enough.
3) Try Nintendo games, they are different. Super Mario Odessey or Last Zelda.
4) Try new genres of games. RPG, Action, logic, simulator, building, etc... Same types of games that you used to play will strugle to surprise you with all the experience you have.
5) Try good story games. Like a show on Netflix, they can catch your attention.

There may maybe a reason in life that puts you in this situation, try to resolve it first. Maybe someone can think about better advice.

I'm an extremely cool guy, which is to say my Quest 3 is arriving today. My last VR set was the original Quest, and I skipped the Quest 2, so this one should be a major, major improvement for me.

As a (primarily) PC gamer, I kind of wish Valve had released any confirmation/information about a possible Index 2 release prior to the Quest 3's release day, as I'd prefer to get out of the Facebook ecosystem. But, whatever, I'll hold on to the Quest 3 for a month, and if I'm iffy on it, or the Index 2 is announced, I'll send the Quest back. If I regret sending it back, I can just order it again, that time with Amazon's holiday return policy (which would extend until late January). Even more time to wait for an Index 2 announcement!

Also, I second indie games and Switch games as refreshing alternatives to the typical AAA stuff. They're excellent ways to break a video-game funk (which, IMO, is usually caused by AAA open world games with maps covered in icons for side quests, collectibles, and other padding that preys on gamers' completionist nature). If you're a PC person, delving into strategy, 4X, puzzle, point-and-click, and other genres you don't see as often on consoles can help. And VR is another refreshing (albeit expensive) alternative.

Or, yeah, just take a break! Put a dent in your Book Pile of Shame instead. Or work on some long-forgotten music project. Get back to writing the next great American novel. Get blazed and watch all of Twin Peaks for the 25th time. Get blazed and do nothing!

I’m reading American Midnight at the moment. Only about a quarter way through but it’s very good.

Virtual reality - is the porn good? Like next level porn experience. We had magazines/vhs then came the internet. Is VR the third age of porn?

I got an iphone 15 and (I promise im not a big porn guy despite this post .. and a few others) but the only thing I wanted to see was if my porn was better. It wasnt.

I'm on the other end of the spectrum.

This has been an insane year for game releases I care about, and there's a lot on my to-play list that I'm excited about.

OLED is great, but this model is maybe 3 years old. You still will see great improvment from IPS/VA panel, but technologies in this model are slightly outdated. Also, price is best since it's release, but I don't really trust companies. There are probably better models upcoming or something else. I doubt DELL become suddenly less greedy.

IPS 38inch is a best in class sure, but I dont know if it's worthy 900$.

Personnaly, I would wait black friday, there should be more choice among the deals.

Also, OLED monitors are great for darker rooms, if your room is very bright, IPS would be a better choice.

P.S. hm google said OLED monitor is only 1.5 years old, but I feel like it's older than that.

Check out Samsung G8,it's on sale too, same panel as dell, but newer model and with remote :)

I just moved my PS4 into my office and I think that's part of the solution. The gaming experience had become a pain in the ass.

The huge projection tv down in the den had glare issues and wasn't the best for video games. It also cut off the outside portion of some game screens, making it impossible to read things like HUD information, which detracted from the experience (no setting seemed to fix this).

The speaker was also blown so I had to integrate a sound bar via optical cable, in addition to dealing with insufficient HDMI inputs for Roku, PS4, and DVR. So just firing up any game was a juggling act of remotes, HDMI switches, TV inputs, sound sources, etc.

Big, older tv in a big room isn't always the best for gaming.

It used to be a good area to escape work and not wake the baby, but now there's too much going on and whenever I start a game I end up having to trudge back upstairs to take care of some work issue, 24/7. And the wife and kid like to f*** around in the den watching Disney or whatever because she has a huge play area there. So may as well self-evict from that space have all my shit in the same place.

Now instead of making shitty comments about middling hockey teams in between work emergencies I can pivot seamlessly to a UT challenge, maybe even while on a conference call. ;)

Going to dig into UT on FC 24 for a while then maybe try the RPGs and other games later. Haven't played FIFA in a few years so it feels more challenging than when I left off.

Thanks all for the suggestions.
