Just started HZD Forbidden West. I find myself in parts awed by it, in parts overwhelmed by it. There's a LOT to take in, particularly the new skill tree, a weakness of the first game, now clearly a strength. It is sophisticated, but it might be a little TOO sophisticated: its going to take some time to figure out what the optimum build is. All that aside, I'm loving the game so far.

Unless you're a completionist it might be helpful to look up what the rewards are for all the various things you can collect. Some may be useful and others might seem like a waste of your time, depending on playing preference, etc. That should cut down on the overwhelm somewhat.

For me the structure of the salvage contracts thing was a little confusing (though I eventually completed all of them), and I never used the arena, fighting pits, or hunting grounds. Some of the other collectibles I let go and some I focused on more intently because of the rewards. YMMV

Learning how to mark items you need for upgrades is also helpful, but not perfect.

Tears of the Kingdom…..seriously contemplating it since I bought my daughter a Switch and she doesn’t play it at all.

Anyone else play it? Recommend?

Getting into the heart of H:FW now. Alloy just made her way past the Barren Light gates, into the Forbidden West , only to be assaulted by a rogue Tenakth tribe. It was awesome, the game plays like a deep, rich sci-fi novel like Dune or something. I've also acquired the legendary "Braced Shot" ability, and that in combo with the Ranged Master valor surge have made me the terror of the Forbidden West.

My only complaints are I wish there were a way to switch quickly between Valor Surges -- I've got both Ranged Master and Stealth Stalker maxed out, but you need to constantly bring up the skill menu to switch between the two. Also I hate Burrowers.

But all in all, not a bad way to spend a Saturday.

Did you play Zero Dawn first or head straight into FW?

It is... amazing. They honestly are setting the bar for interactive physics within a living game world, using relatively old hardware no less. So many things to explore, see, build, fight, and collect. It deserves all the high praise it's receiving.

I’ve spent no fewer than the past 10 sessions just building tanks, hovercraft, attack helicopters, motorcycles, etc. and going to town. The regular game, shrines, etc. are all fantastic and what you’d expect out of a Zelda game, but there’s something wholesome about building an Apache replica and going to town on Bokoblin base.

It’s fantastic. If you think of something to do, it’s probably in the game!

Currently sporting a sapphire fused shield that freezes enemies when they strike you, and then I always have some rocket shields in reserve to blast off!
