OT: Video Game Talk (oh, also the Week before the All-Star Break Pre-Game Talk "archive")

The Dead Space remake slaps. Hopefully they do 2 as well. Last of Us PC, Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 remake all in the first half of this year. We’re feasting.

I bought Hogwarts legacy on a key shop, looking at the studio’s past work and this game is insanely ambitious given they worked on *checks notes* movie tie in for Pixar’s Cars. Leaves me skeptical as it’s a huge jump for them.

Apparently Halo is switching to Unreal engine and 343 is being re-built as a studio from scratch. What a dysfunctional studio to helm a tentpole IP like Halo.

It's tricky, I like that Microsoft has emphasized backwards compatibility and driven Sony to do the same (unlike certain other console manufacturers, cough, cough, Nintendo, who want you to repurchase the same game multiple times).

In a different climate, Sony's flagship exclusives would have only released on PS5, and the scarcity of hardware would have driven gamers to a frenzy. (Back when I was growing up, this was an intentional scarcity was a marketing strategy for Nintendo.) If you consider the new God of War and new Horizon (though not my cup of tea) as exclusives, the PS5 early lineup looks particularly strong. Returnal was my favorite game of 2021, so maybe I am biased here.

On Elden Ring design, I am really worried that other developers will try to imitate it without understanding why it works. Actually, I rate Elden Ring below most of the other From Software Soulsborne games. I prefer the crafted experiences and carefully calibrated difficulty levels of the other games, not to mention the shorter lengths.

I'm not even sure it is scarcity that caused this ultra-long cross gen era. I think it is the new nature of things. There is such a huge install base on previous gen systems that in order to pay for development costs, you really need to open up the development to both platforms... then when you consider they are basically just simple x86 AMD upgrades on the previous gen, it makes much more sense to target something that has an install base of ~150+m vs what might be 30m in the first year.

Backwards compatibility though, I think Playstation would have loved to forget. Their attempt this generation has even been piss poor. Xbox really sets the standard there. Not only will the games play to the best of the new systems capability, many times there are upgrades to previous games, and their version of smart delivery is way better than Playstation. To me Sony sits right in the middle of Nintendo and Xbox there... they'd like to not offer the upgrades and smart delivery, but know they have to compete with Microsoft there.

Bloodbourne is the best Souls game IMO and I don't think it is particularly close. Elden Ring is probably has the best mainstream appeal though.

What hockey information are you missing about a thread that was titled "Pre Game Talk..." and it was detailing the games they've already played? Serious question there.

The games have been played, they're over, all relevant talk (like Byram skating again today) are being discussed in their appropriate thread.

This one being overtaken by Video Game discussion is literally hurting 0 people and breaking 0 rules, in my purview.

The games have been played, they're over, all relevant talk (like Byram skating again today) are being discussed in their appropriate thread.

It's the All-Star break so there's not much to discuss, and this thread has already run its course with regards to the content it was covering. So why ban video game talk? Any Avs news will be in the injury thread and trade thread.

1 - Yeah it's JK Rowling's IP (even though I don't believe she's involved in the game at all). Some people can't separate the art from the artist.
2 - Apparently, I haven't read the actual plot of the game just what I've heard, Goblins are written very stereotypically Jewish. And in Hogwarts Legacy the main villain is this horrible greedy, child murdering, goblin. So therefore the game devs clearly hate Jewish people.

I just about shit myself playing Oblivion when Boromir/Ned Stark showed up out of no where. Skyrim is definitely master class, I'm embarrassed I left that off my list. Though Skyrim really did hit it's peak IMO until the modding community really rallied around it.

I've never even seen a HP movie, and her recent antics have made it certain I never do. But its a video game that has nothing to do with her other than she created the franchise so I don't see the issue.

It really is unfortunate what's happening with 343. It seems like the engine for infinite is just too hard to develop for. There should be no reason It's taking this long to add new content for infinite's multiplayer. It's crazy they haven't even added a single new gun yet. They haven't even added the gun that we're available in the beta and that are highly requested into MP. Switching to Unreal should do wonders for putting out new content for Halo 7. Every dev seems to agree that dropping assets and creating on the newest version of Unreal is incredibly easy.
