I'm not understanding why Vegas can claim, waive, Edmonton re-claims but then Vegas can re-claim and he goes to Henderson instead of Bakersfield? Isn't Edmonton the original waiving team?
Guess Vegas is considered the original team now. Weird thing is the team that was higher in the standings put in a claim when the Oilers tried to send him to the AHL but not this time?

What an incredible ride for Raph.... 2nd rounder to cracking Team Canadas WJC team, to fairly highly regarded, to hes kinda "meh", to tug-o-war between beautiful Edmonton and Vegas....

When Vegas first claimed him off waivers yes they were. But then after Vegas waived him and the Oilers re-claimed him, Vegas became the “original team”
So if Edmonton re-claimed (again) wouldn't it just be an endless loop? Why wouldn't he have gone straight to Bakersfield when Edmonton was the only claimer after Vegas waived him?

Guessing Colorado was the team that put in the claim earlier when the Oilers tried to send him down but with Kahkonen available they picked him up instead but didn't want to waste two roster spots on both? :dunno:

Edmontron wasn't the only claimer when Vegas waived him.
Gotcha... so Edmonton claimed him with the intent of assigning, but someone else also claimed so they had to keep him up or re-waive. They chose to re-waive. But this mysterious third team changed didn't claim this time, so Vegas was able to re-claim and automatically assign?

Who was the third team..? Calgary?

God I love reading through a thread that incorporates several independent events so I have to scroll through 5 pages to find the first post about the most recent update that the thread purports to be about

Does this mean a team above EDM in the standings colluded with Vegas to put in a claim when Edmonton claimed him?

Why would that team put in a claim in at all and not put one in when Edmonton waived him?

Seems fishy.

Calgary did lose a depth centre when Vegas claimed Schwindt so it’s possible. They could use another AHL centre. But who knows?

NHL should at least do some due diligence here to see if it was collusion. It's kinda fishy someone else made a claim forcing Edmonton to put him back on Waivers but then let Vegas claim him back into the AHL.

We're obviously talking about the margins here, but Edmonton basically lost an AHL prospect for nothing. Feels like it could have been Vegas going "hey, we'll scratch your back if you scratch ours here"

Calgary would've gotten him if they had put in a claim. It was one of Colorado, Boston, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Florida, Carolina, Dallas, or Rangers.

This is pretty wild, there’s a number of factors that contribute to whether a team is even in a position to make a waiver claim on a given day even if they want to given how tight teams are to the cap. Cap/roster situations are constantly in flux, suspecting foul play here makes no sense to me.

I don't know how it makes "no sense", you're right that there are other potential reasons, but to completely rule out collusion as a possibility seems naive. We're what.. a year removed from a team lying about a player's no trade clause.

And Vegas has now done it two years in a row.

Targeted a former high pick (on waivers) and rather than be forced to keep him in the NHL, got him through waivers (immediately) again, to assign him to their own AHL team instead. A couple speed bumps this time around, but results ultimately the same.

Denisenko last year and Lavoie this year. Assume they’ll try the same with Schwindt as soon as Calgary’s roster settles down.

Vegas needs to add players to their organization who are close to being ready, because of the turnover in their bottom six every year, coupled with how many ELCs they have with players who are still a ways from being NHL players.

Whether these guys work out or not, who knows, but it is interesting that Edmonton was the target of both offersheets, and the old school waiver move we used to see a lot back in the day, but since managers started being so nice to each other these days, we don’t see it very often anymore. I can only think of the two examples in recent time, and Vegas did it both times.

That was in 2021 brother.
The unveiling was more recent

The offer sheets made sense though, Edmonton's cap situation is f*cked and those guys weren't that expensive [not crazy offersheet comp] and decent candidates to break out with bigger opportunity. It's basically the perfect storm of circumstances needed for an offersheet to make sense.

Denisenko's 1-way contract probably lead Florida to be OK with not re-claiming him (to put back into their own AHL team) so they weren't spending $775K on an AHL player after he didn't make the team out of camp.
