Young men playing in front of family and friends is more of a distraction than is worth.

In addition to that, the way the fan base treaded Jimmy Hayes (close family friends) was not lost on the Vesey family.

He gets to stay near home and far enough that he will not be pestered consistently for Tickets and to show up at family gatherings every time he is on a homestand.

it's always amazing how many cousins you have when you have money and are accessible.

I don't know how much "how the fanbase treated Jimmy Hayes has to do with it"

More likely Boston wasn't offering him a guaranteed spot in the top 6.

Lol and the Rangers window has not closed. If anything the window is opening. Only players over 30, Nash and Lundqvist. Our young players, will be better. Zib, Miller, Kreider, Hayes, skjei. Staal will have a bounce back year. If Nash stays healthy another 35+ goals. If the Sharks can make the Stanley cup finals with a very old roster, that most thought would miss the playoffs why can't the Rangers. Bunch of haters.

Um, that's a lot of optimism and what ifs that won't happen. The Sharks have Pavelski, Thornton, Marleau, Couture up front and Burns, Vlasic on defense.

There is not a single player I'd take ahead of those guys from the Rangers. Not one!

The Rangers definitely didn't offer that, since they already had 6 top 6 forwards on the roster.

He signed with the team that made the least amount of sense for him. And everything he says now about is just lip service. It's just bs.

It's evident he doesn't care about his hockey career that much. He chose the NYR because of the city, not because of his future. He'll be staying with a good friend so they can take advantage of the lifestyle.

The kid is in for a rude awakening when he starts to play in the league. He's going to have to fight hard to stay in the league.

Let me guess Devils made the most sense.

Did he ever state a reason why he didn't want to play in Nashville?

I mean I get NYC is great and all for a young guy (im 25), but Nashville is pretty damn great too for a young guy...especially if you like Blondes

Good for the Rangers. I'm just glad it wasnt the Leafs. I honestly don't see the Rangers as contenders in the near future, but you never know whats going to happen in this league.

The kid has no ambition, no character, and definitely no heart what so ever. Talking about choosing for all the wrong reasons. This just shows why all the other teams that were missing out on him should be glad they did.
NYR signs players and then throw them away when things ain't going the way they think it should! Can't understand why players keep coming to them? And that shows more about who Vesey and Hayes are and what they want to accomplish with there hockey career.
Why not choose Boston, Toronto, NJ, Chicago, NYI, or Buffalo..!

Buffalo is stacked in the top 6, I'd imagine Chicago is as well. Toronto is perennially bad, I thought the Isles would creep in and grab him, don't know why he didn't choose Boston and nobody goes to the Devils on purpose(and likely Toronto as well).

Of course! I especially like this line 'The kid is in for a rude awakening when he starts to play in the league. He's going to have to fight hard to stay in the league." Because that's unique to Vesey and if he had signed with Nashville or Buffalo that would be different.

Seem's like a Schultz situation...

Hope his career doesn't go particularly great, I'm not a fan of this arrogant kid.

You mean where he decided that the best situation for him was to go to a perrenial door mat and be part of the turnaround with all the young talent and lead the Oilers to the cup?

There is a lot to be said for playing on a team that has had a bunch of recent success. Players to teach you how to be a pro and be a part of a successful organization and team.

Funny to see this coming as a surprise to basically everyone except HFNYR.

Did I think we were actually going to land the kid? No, but I thought we had as good a shot as any other team.

It was talked about on HFNYR over a week ago that Vesey's family was concerned about the treatment of Jimmy Hayes by the fans and media. Those two families are close. There's a massive amount of pressure and distractions playing in your hometown. The Rangers are literally the closest he can get to playing at home without actually playing at home.

Rangers GM Jeff Gorton is a Boston guy, as is most of his key staff (Director of Player Personnel Gordie Clark, and Assistant DoPP Steve Greeley), and he has a very close relationship with Vesey's agent, Fish.

The Rangers core is made up of largely NCAA guys, many of whom he knows (McDonagh, Skjei, Miller, Stepan, Hayes, Kreider).

His agents made it very clear that they were going to look closely at rosters and future commitments, and that the ability of a team to offer him a 2nd contract was important.

Check off every box, and the Rangers are a good fit for the kid. The rumors of the team's demise have been greatly exaggerated, and he gets to live in a great city for a youngster with money.

If Chicago had the ability to give him that 2nd contract, I think they would have made the most sense. But they're in a cap crunch, and have a history of trading guys away just when they're about to get paid. That's not me ragging on them. It's a smart way to do business, but it probably cost them Vesey this time. Not that it makes a difference with their embarrassment of riches.

The Leafs using the father and his brother as leverage, lol. His brother who was 6th on his college team in scoring will probably go play hockey in Asia or sign with the Dundas Real McCoys Senior A team and his Dad will be let go for health reasons as a leaf scout.

There was a report that said Vesey SR was given the job because he is a friend of management and because of his health concerns, was hired so he could have health benefits. And the Leafs drafted Nolan in 2014....so you really think the Leafs have been setting up targeting a 3rd round pick (Vesey) for 2 years?

What makes him toxic?

Only BAD people who take THREE DAYS!?!? to make life-altering decisions when only TWELVE teams are making a pitch play for the AWFUL, OLD RANGERS!!! (They have FOUR forwards over the age of 25!?!? Someone call the retirement home! DUUUUUURRRRRRRR!)

God there are some salty potatoes up in here.

What changed in the month+ to turn your opinion?

Brassard for Ziba + Vesey?

Anything else?

Ouch.

A vast majority of our fans (not sure if JT was in that mix) were already calling for Gorton to be fired because in the time between us being eliminated and the start of FA, he hadn't done anything major. They then echoed their sentiments even more after July 1st because we didn't address anything major. Although, all Gorton did was bring in two outstanding PK forwards to address an area of weakness, replace aging guys like Moore with younger, speedier players like Jooris and pick up some young FA's like Clendening, Stromewall, etc.

Still, Rangers fans were not happy because it was July 10th (even though we still had the whole summer to go) and Gorton hadn't traded half the team away yet.

Then, out of nowhere, Gorton some how managed to make us an even younger team by trading Brassard for Zibby while creating millions in cap space for us. Now, we signed Vesey. In just over a month, people have gone from wanting Gorton fired to equating him with god.

The problem? Gorton started making great moves from day 1 by fixing our PK and bringing in speedier players. Those moves weren't flashy or involve any big names so it took the Vesey signing for many Rangers fans to be happy with what we have accomplished.

TL;DR, what you said above.

It has more to do with it then you think.

And the Rangers also do not guarantee playing time to anyone.

Quick...really? There are other goalies, but you pick Quick?

Are you the one that ranked Quick as the #2 goalie in NHL 17?

:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Quick has reached a level and a peak Henrik never has and probably never will at 34.

I'm surprised he chose the Rangers in the sense that I thought he would go to Boston or Buffalo. Best of luck to him.
