He was a Hawks asset. And then he wasn't. So yeah, they lost Hayes.

Hawks lost Hayes because his brother and friends were too garbage to crack the Hawks lineup between 2013-2015, the period which they won two cups.

He was not a Hawks asset. His righs were. Rights expire at a certain point as per the CBA, which everyone knows in advance of acquiring them. If the league had come in and told the Hawks they no longer had exclusive negotiating rights before Hayes graduated, they would have lost an asset. As it is, they had an asset and failed to convert it into a more valuable asset, namely an NHL contract.

I'm very surprised he signed with the Rangers. I was really expecting him to go to Boston near the end of all of this.

It's obvious that proximity to his family was a top priority, so why not just go to your hometown team then, especially when you consider that both the Rangers and Boston are in similar stages right now. Maybe Boston's pitch did't instill confidence in him?

He obviously had his reasons though, and best of luck to him. I've adopted the Rangers as my 2nd favorite team kinda sorta a little bit.

Young men playing in front of family and friends is more of a distraction than is worth.

In addition to that, the way the fan base treaded Jimmy Hayes (close family friends) was not lost on the Vesey family.

He gets to stay near home and far enough that he will not be pestered consistently for Tickets and to show up at family gatherings every time he is on a homestand.

it's always amazing how many cousins you have when you have money and are accessible.

Whatever makes you feel better about yourself. I guess that fan represents the fan base, am I right? Care to venture over to the Leafs forum to see what the majority thought? Yeah, didn't think so. That wouldn't follow the agenda.

Exactly the response I was expecting.

He went to the team that offered him the chance to be the highest profile young player, hence maximizing his chance of immediate personal success, hence improving the chance of getting big $$$ for his 2nd contract.
It was just big dollars signs in front of his eyes, that's all.

Nah, now I think it's jealousy talking. The NYR is a blue collar team that never has boosted anyone's stats and doesn't exactly have a good cap situation compared to ANY of the other suitors. He could have done the opposite, but choose a chance to do something for real over a comfy lifestyle. Great character sign by my book. He could have gone somewhere and played in front of empty stands and earned an easy buck with low taxes like so many others, this kid obviously wanted more.

Seems like the worst possible place for him to go.. a team going downhill, with putrid contracts.. NYI, Chicago, and Pittsburgh all would have made more sense

I'll bet the Rangers trade him before the two-year contract is over. Just anticipating a much-hyped second Vesey auction.

I'll take that bet.

with a lack of 1st round picks over the last 4 seasons, replenishing youth this way somewhat off-sets that loss.

If anyone gets traded it's going to be in the same line as the Brassard/Zibanejad deal.

Expect Nash to get moved as soon as he increases his trade value by getting 25-30 goals by 02/01/17 Will be the same kind of deal, a slight step back at the same position and a future asset (pick or prospect)

Can we stop with the "Buffalo was stupid to give up a 3rd rounder for nothing" narrative?

From the 3rd round on, it's about a 12% rate just to make the NHL. Much less be a great player or even a top of the line up player.

Vesey makes Buffalo's top 6 if he signs with them. They got two months to show him what Buffalo is about, and demonstrate that they value him. Without those two months, they're lumped in with all the other teams: no visit to Buffalo, no exclusive day for Buffalo's team to visit with Vesey. Much tougher for Buffalo to make a case.

That two months is worth the 12%.

2 months to show him Buffalo is not an advantage...

Yikes.
Rangers are on a major downturn.
Can't see them getting past round 2 any time soon and likely not a playoff team in 2-3 years.

I'm loving posts like this. As if adding Vesey harms the Rangers and speeds some sort of decline.

Ranger fans are happy that we have managed to add young talent to a team that needs young talent. And they didn't have to give up assets to do it.

To all the people who are yelling "Bust!", he may be. But that's not because there's not ability there. One NHL team drafted him, one NHL team traded for him and at least 6 NHL teams tried to sign him.

Keep this move in perspective. Nothing about this move deserves a "Yikes."

We now return to my regularly scheduled snark, already in progress...

By far the best top nine in the NHL. Doesn't matter how trash are defence is, this group is a contender

My god, that is no where close to being the best top 9 in the NHL. That may not even be top 10.

Lol...big deal. There are countless fans from Boston that guaranteed everyone that he was signing in Boston.

The Leafs using the father and his brother as leverage, lol. His brother who was 6th on his college team in scoring will probably go play hockey in Asia or sign with the Dundas Real McCoys Senior A team and his Dad will be let go for health reasons as a leaf scout.

In your head
Just the fans of the O6 teams that have accomplished next to nothing since '67.
To be fair it took a while for O6 teams to figure out the Penguins' 'nearly lose team and gain franchise player' strategy minus the whole losing team and fans part
