It doesn't make sense to you that someone would want a chance to live in the most glamorous city in the world while playing on a playoff team vs living in a crappy city while playing on a bottom 10 team?

In 3 years (i.e. His prime) buffalo will have as good a chance for the cup as the Rangers.

He's also likely cost himself on his next contract. Don't see him putting up as many points with the Rags as he would with eichel

I love how for the past 3 years or so we keep hearing about Lundqvist's imminent hard decline. Guess what. It has not happened and there is not even any evidence that he is declining. He just finished #3 in 5v5 CSv%, FSv%. So maybe we should pump the brakes on this idea that he is declining. At least just a little bit.

Ummm, go watch the pens series again. He was torched

The only fan base who should be very disappointed is Boston, if a Buffalo kid was a free agent and rejected the Sabres equal offer I'd be choked about it.

Buffalo other than his friendship with Eichel wasn't that good a fit for Vesey. Sabres have a logjam of forwards competing for spots on the top 2 lines - Eichel, O'Reilly, Reinhart, Okposo, Kane, Ennis, Girgensons and then there's Alex Nylander and Justin Bailey knocking on the door.

Just giving a guy like Vesey a spot on your top lines is fine if your team really doesn't have better options, but if you have popular veterans on your team who could play as well as Vesey might in that spot you are going to have some problems in the dressing room.

It stinks to lose what could have been a good, FREE, asset but I've said all along that there is a whole bunch of teams that need a Vesey more than BOS. Vatrano at the same age litup the AHL to a greater extent than Vesey ever did in the NCAA and they have Marchand and Belesky as vets to go along with Heinen((can play all positions), Debrusk, Gabrielle, Bjork in the pipeline.

Again, it sucks to have another local boy choose to play elsewhere but I would be way more upset if he didn't play a position where BOS was already very deep at.

For those who don't understand why he signed with the Rangers because their cup widow is closing or has closed, aren't taking into consideration he may play 12-15 years in the NHL. Now don't tell me I don't know that he'll play a long career, I know, I know.
Just from his point of view, Vesey thinks he will. New York would be a great place for star players for endorsements and all around best chance at making money outside of just his player contact. Most likely why he chose not to sign in Nashville or Buffalo.
Congrats to all you Ranger fans out there it's always nice getting a great prospect for nothing.

Think about the coaching staff, that alone is enough not to sign in Brooklyn.

For his second contract he would have to battle Snow. IIRC that was a big factor in his decision making.

It will take years for NYI to erase the bad reputation they have, but Snow is still there.

More baseless "facts" coming from Lenny on Ice aka the guy who's still upset over the Nilsson for Leddy trade. Where is your source that Vesey wouldn't sign with the Islanders because of Snow's negotiating?

Kid played it well. Can't knock him for using the rules of the game to his advantage. Max rookie deal, opportunity for playing time, and of course the bright lights of the big city.

Counter view, he's coming off his draft +5 season (wasn't drafted his first year of eligibility in 2011). Compare other NHL draft +5 players or younger playing in a top 9 role. Those are his peers.

Surprised he didn't go with BUF and the opportunity to play with Eichel like Caggiula did in choosing EDM. Especially with the added courting period BUF had.

Maybe he liked NYC as a city more than BUF? Who knows? If that was the case, BUF is better off anyways.

I think you mean until they move Girardi and potentially Staal (although he's much less of an issue) and get a couple of guys who can really move the puck. And then they pray that Lundqvist can still provide great goaltending worth his 8.5m cap hit for the next 5 years.

Staal is not bad, he's definitely a competent second pair guy. I'm certain that if the Rangers want to trade him, they can. Defensemen get injured more than forwards and there are only 6 of them, so there's always a run on defensemen midseason. Not everyone wants to make a trade like Duclair and a first (and 2 more assets) for Yandle. Someone will want a guy who's can be had for cheap. That's when Staal and likely even Girardi get traded.

Unfortunately the Stanley Cup winners of the last decade have all followed a blueprint that the Rangers can't match with their quality of centers. You can talk about youth all you like but none of it has the elite potential you need to win the cup in today's league.

The Rangers have 10 guys 26 or younger, plus Zuccarello at 29 and underpaid, and prospects. That allows for tremendous savings. Nash will be traded (or less likely, will leave as a free agent in 2 years), Staal will be easily traded because he's still a quality second pair guy and teams are always desperate for defensemen, and Girardi will likely be traded for an overpaid forward who costs less (again, teams always pay a premium to get a defenseman).

Nash ($7.8) and Staal ($5.7) make $13.5. Glass is another $1.5, so that $15. That easily allows the Rangers to sign a star forward and a very good defenseman (and that's NOT counting that Girardi will be traded for someone costing less than him).

Girardi will be traded? For someone cheaper? Good luck with that one.

The kid has no ambition, no character, and definitely no heart what so ever. Talking about choosing for all the wrong reasons. This just shows why all the other teams that were missing out on him should be glad they did.
NYR signs players and then throw them away when things ain't going the way they think it should! Can't understand why players keep coming to them? And that shows more about who Vesey and Hayes are and what they want to accomplish with there hockey career.
Why not choose Boston, Toronto, NJ, Chicago, NYI, or Buffalo..!

Because the rangers, a team clearly worse than pens caps lightning panthers, is a young cup contender :sarcasm:

Hey man. Rangers fans dying for some picks. After giving away first rounders the last 4 seasons

The Rangers took some major steps this season to help the future:

1. Traded for Mika Zbad;

2. Acquired 13 prospects through the draft and signings (Vesey was one of the 7 college/Euro prospects the Rangers signed);

3. Traded for 3 draft picks in rounds 2, 4, 6.

I was very critical of the Rangers future until June, but the team added both quality and quantity of youth and prospects.

Character move by the kid for sure. Nice to see one of them for once not care about taxes, an opertunity to get paid but still play in front of empty arenas and what not, and go to a franchise that yes means a lot more pressure, but also has a true fan base and offers the possibility to do something great.

He signed with the team that made the least amount of sense for him. And everything he says now about is just lip service. It's just bs.

It's evident he doesn't care about his hockey career that much. He chose the NYR because of the city, not because of his future. He'll be staying with a good friend so they can take advantage of the lifestyle.

The kid is in for a rude awakening when he starts to play in the league. He's going to have to fight hard to stay in the league.

The future being bright is a subjective thing.

We're not in a decline until we actually decline.

I can confidently say this roster as currently constructed will be the worst team in the Metro if not the East very shortly. Not this season, but It's pretty obvious were on a serious downswing. For one Lundqvist is no longer the best goalie in the league as he has been for the past 5-8 years. Holtby, Bishop, Crawford, Schneider among a few others have all surpassed him. He's only going to get worse with each passing year, the older he gets. We already saw it this past season, it was the least-Lundqvist season we've ever seen. Maybe his stats don't indicate it but the eye test does.

And the entire roster is flawed if we're banking on Lundqvist and Lundqvist alone to carry us to the promised land, considering what we just saw with Murray/Jones/Vasilevskiy.

Look at the teams around us. Washington and Pittsburgh are elite teams and will be for the foreseeable future. The Islanders and Flyers have elite pieces in place (better than anything we have) AND are stacked for the future. The Hurricanes are on the rise, CBJ should be to if Torts doesn't screw it all up. The Devils will probably be better than us this season as well. Schneider is better than Lundqvist, they'll have 3 30 goal scorers on their roster with some good young players on the up and come (Zacha/Severson/Boucher/Blandisi). Oh and they have probably the best young coach in all of hockey.

Now in the Atlantic, Florida and Tampa are in the elite tier and should be Cup contenders for the next half decade, at least. Buffalo's near future looks great, Montreal should be back in the playoffs if Price can stay healthy, and the Leafs with all their young exciting talent should be making some noise in the near future. Ottawa is always a threat to make the playoffs and at least have some good prospects and their core is relatively young.

That leaves us, the Bruins and Red Wings. 3 teams with older cores that had a good run, except they at least have a decent prospect pool. We have the worst prospect pool in all of hockey.

Sure, I don't have a crystal ball. I'm just putting two and two together here, though.

It would take a by-God miracle for us to win the Cup. But we're Rangers fans, we used our one miracle-per 54 years up already.

What changed in the month+ to turn your opinion?

Brassard for Ziba + Vesey?

Anything else?

He went to the team that offered him the chance to be the highest profile young player, hence maximizing his chance of immediate personal success, hence improving the chance of getting big $$$ for his 2nd contract.
It was just big dollars signs in front of his eyes, that's all.
