Vegas about to circumvent cap again? UPD: Mark Stone back practicing.

The debate shouldn't be if it's cheating or not when we look at the CBA because obviously it's not.

The debate needs to be how do they fix it because this BS obviously can't continue. It's literally the stupidest rule. If a players injury timeline has him set to come back during the playoffs, you shouldn't get the cap space. Or you get the option to use the cap space at the expense of the LTIR player being done for the entire season to include postseason. Pick one, you can't have both.

They overlooked this one big time. Guarantee it won't remain this way in the next CBA
Guarantee it will be the same. This was brought up last year in GM meetings. Most teams refused any ideas to fix the issue. Its not cheating if any team can do it.

My only issue is that when I said I can't wait to see who they get and how they use it.. the replies were very clearly:

1. we might not make playoffs
2. we have no assets to acquire anyone
3. we didn't tell Stone to hurt his spleen

Only one of those has held up.lol

I don't mind teams doing this.. I'd love for my Oil to do it but own it.

Even funnier, I don't think LV is done.lol They still got a first to toss around and cap space with Martinez.lol

By most teams do you mean Vegas and Tampa...?

It's not cheating if any team can do it 100%. But it's not like you can decide to take your star winger out back and break his ankle in February to ensure he's out 5-7 weeks. Injuries are complete luck (or lackthereof) and happenstance.

What's to stop teams from saying the injury is worse than it actually is and letting the guy sit out an extra 2 weeks for the playoffs to start? It's a slippery slope and the only avenue it leads to is more aggressive exploitation after Vegas loses 2 games all playoffs with their $100M playoff roster

3rd party medical experts from the NHL. Contrary to popular believe, the NHL keeps a very keen eye on LTIR.

I believe only 2 teams were interested in regulating this, rest of the teams said no.

Chicago actually started it. Tampa was the team that tried to get this loophole closed according to THN. Then they presumably said **** it and used it themselves.

Exactly right. I'm not going to complain about Vegas using it, which wasn't my reason for responding, it's just asinine to see people blatantly lie about it to make themselves feel better.

You don't actually know how close of an eye the league keeps on this none of us do. How often are they assessed by these independent medical examiners? What is the criteria for fit to return? It's incredibly easy to exploit what is deemed fit to return to sport especially when you have players who play through injuries despite likely receiving medical advice not to. There is no black and white when it come to readiness to return to sport from an injury. There's tissue healing and then there's symptoms, conditioning, strength testing, power testing etc that actually takes place for most musculoskeletal injuries.

In Stone's case his injury is not a musculoskeletal injury. It should be black and white that when he's healed (confirmed by diagnostic imaging) he should no longer be eligible for LTIR. You would think it should be easy to investigate, but if his "healing timeline" ends up coinciding with the first playoff game then I think its pretty easy to conclude the independent medical examining is not thorough and a complete joke.

Bet you that spleen will magically heal up by game 1 of the playoffs. Game 82 of the regular season, no chance in hell....but a couple of days later, all is well and good to go.

I bet you if Stone is playing game 1 of the playoffs he's doing it while not being close to 100%, but simpletons will assume if he's playing he's fully healthy and should have been playing regular season games.

That didn't provide anything we don't already know. It says the league can request medical records. Great, what if they don't do any diagnostic imaging on Stone until just before the playoffs? Can they force him to be activated if he hasn't gone through the appropriate rehab and strength and conditioning to get back into game shape? Stone's injury like I said is not a musculoskeletal injury so it should be black and white on when it's healed. If it's healed right as the playoffs start we know this entire process is a joke. Unless of course you believe in insane coincidences.

Mark stone is the perfect guy for Vegas because of his injury history he can easily just delay his return citing “he knows his body” or some sketchy convenience.

The NHL can remove him off LTIR and force Vegas to become cap compliant or forfeit games. You cannot deliberately sit a player out on LTIR just because you want to. That has to be signed off by doctors, filed with the NHL, etc. Yes, there are huge grey areas, but guess what? All teams can use it equally. Just because your team isnt doesnt make it illegal.

True for his previous back injuries, but this should be pretty cut and dry because there's no actual rehab process that needs to occur to prevent the likelihood of re-rupturing his spleen. This is a case of the organ just needing time to heal and you can see that healing process with diagnostic imaging. This should be easy to identify if their investigation process is actually thorough whether or not he is lying about being healthy prior to the playoffs starting.

You make it sound like a team can just choose when to have injuries and that everyone can use this. I've never argued it's illegal, I've argued it's a terrible rule that allows a few teams to gain an unfair advantage that most teams don't have the luxury of being able to use.

They didn’t have to worry about that because the estimated timetable of recovery was exactly the two months between when it happened and the first game of the playoffs.

Stone has those regenerative healing powers. He'll be like a new man once the Game 1 playoff schedule comes out.
One to look up to.
