I think about Tavares’ game tonight, and imagine myself watching him 2, 3, 4 years from now on the Leafs on another Saturday. There’s no cap hit low enough for that to be a preferred scenario.
I wouldn't have thought so a month ago, but I agree with you at this point...

One major decline is the teams PK. Last year it was Holl, Brodie, Marner, Kampf, Kerfoot, Gio as some of our most used bodies.

We were 12th in the league. This year we are 27th.

Brodie, Gio and Kampf have all declined.
Holl was an excellent PK guy and he’s missed on the PK, if nowhere else. Kerfoot was also very good on the PK. Engvall was good too.

We lost some pretty good defensive players, brought in some weak defensive players, and had a number of players decline.

There is obviously more to our play than the PK, but it is one of the problems.

I mean as a draw for mercenary UFAs to come here and stats pad. But I don’t think we want mercenaries here going forward. Gotta start building a real cohesive team at some point.

I am scared to think of Treliving's next UFA contract he signs.

It will probably be Lucic 8x8

The Canucks ain't going anywhere in the playoffs. They need to be better 5 on 5.
They are the best team in hockey 5on5 by a large margin. They played their worst period of hockey in the 2nd and Demko was not great. They completely sat back and their stars took advantage of two brain dead penalties. Refs gave you as many chances and more to score but they failed.

PK is a big blow and we even upgraded it for playoffs with Schenn, ROR, Accari and Laff to a lesser extent.

The priority this offseason was toughness and offense, but we don't seem all that tougher and we don't seem to be getting any better depth scoring.

Why? Do interact with them?

Where I live I get why Auburn fans dislike Bama fans, why everyone hates TN or LSU fans, why MS State fans hate Ole Miss fans…. When I lived in Toronto I didn’t hate Vanvouver
Geaux tigers. Played baseball there in the late 90's. SEC fans and sports are absolutely insane.

As long as the big four are playing on two lines, there won’t be a lot of offense from the other forwards.
For starter, they are just not as talented.
More importantly, they get tougher zone start and no PP time.
Been saying for a long time. Big four need to split into three lines.
With the current players, I would just go with the following.
Calle-AM-MM our top line and also shut down line. Let’s face it, this is the line that will either playing against opposing shut down line or opposing best line.
Bert-JT-Knies, that’s our Ozone line where once they win faceoff, they will cycle and grind. Also the most shelter line.
Holmberg-Domi-Willie, that’s our rush line. If this team starts in the Dzone, needs to match with Reilly or Lilly as both of them can send this like flying out the zone with an outlet pass.
Just roll with these three lines.
Then use the 4th line here and there.

McCabe barely scrapes by as no.4 but McCabe-Benoit can compete for best 3rd pair in the league.

The real problem Lil-Brodie-Gio. Not many will agree with me on Lil but I see none of these 3 as real top 4 and I rather have McCabe-Benoit pairing over any 2 combo of those 3. Top 4 is a mess.
Rielly has never had a worthy partner at RD, it's been 10 years!!

Nonsense, Brodie was excellent until about a year ago but somehow Keefe has not noticed his play dropping off steadily since then. Also he's still in denial about Giordano being 40 and unable to handle anything more than occasional 3rd pair duties.

Rielly's also been poor in his own end 4+ regular seasons now so he can take some of the blame too.

At 5 on 5 the Canucks have a 49.96xgf%. They have an actual GF% of 60 because of an absurd almost 105 PDO at 5 on 5. They are a middle of the pack 5 on 5 team getting good goaltending and shooting WAY above expectations.

This team is so mid

Tre needs to add a multi year deadline top 4 dman and then sign 2 top 4 RHD in the off season

Next year d should be

Rielly - Signing
Deadline deal - Signing
McCabe - Liljegren / Benoit

Let Brodie walk even if he wants .950. Drive gio to the retirement home.

If we value Benoit over Liljegren I’d deal him, it’s been 8 years and he can’t keep up

Nobody in their right minds values Benoit over Liljegren. Jesus what is this.

Liljegren prevents and generates expected goals for better than any other defneseman on this team and has the best GF% at 5 on 5. He is closer to being on our top pairing than trade bait.
The problem is this defence is very far away from cup caliber, we need to add an actual #2 and a #3. An ekholm/Lindholm and Manson type. So Liljegren being better than this ragtag group of players and Rielly isn’t gonna impress me

He can have all that and yet he can’t and won’t play with Rielly top pair it’s been tried and it never works, he can’t fit there

He still fans on pucks and flubs easy plays which result to goals

I don’t think he’s a top 4 dman on a cup aspiring team, just like I don’t think Tavares isn’t a 2C on a Stanley cup winning team. Liljegren as a #5 could be good, but he’s prone to mistakes at the worst time and cost us big

It's weird - on their second goal, if that had been a goal by Matty or Mitch or Willy or JT, it would have been a great shot that no goalie could have stopped, but since it was only Hogland's 14th of the year, Jones should have made that easy save.

On their third goal, Willy being the only Leaf in front of the net begs the question "where were the defencemen?"

Demko screened on our first.

Three good passes for the second.

Two goals by Willy and not an assist from Bert and Ernie.

Lovely shortie - Demko too far back in the crease, Mitch makes him pay.

Two PP goals scored by a man unattended at the side of the net.

Why does it look like the had us outnumbered in all three zones at the same time all game?

This team is starting to scare me

There's nothing worse than being ok and scraping into the playoffs but not being a true contender and that's what we look like right now

We're getting by on some extremely talented guys carrying a very defective roster over the finishing line and that's not going to cut it against the better teams

The goaltender has to give us a chance, Jones is starting to show signs of falling back to earth
The defense can't be this porous and half the time Keefe doesn't seem to trust most of them and we need the depth to start chipping in and Scoring

All in all a scary time to be a Leafs fan
