Yes, I agree, however any chance the team has with re-signing Hughes is contingent on the team being good.

Not adding and then just letting him leave isn't how you build a winning team, every team is better with Quinn Hughes than a 1st round pick from a playoff team two years from now.
I agree, Vancouver also has a better track record through trading/UFA than they do drafting. Vancouver is always going to be an attractive market for free agency.

It seems like the Canucks have targeted an interesting market inefficiency.

Taking the 1st in the Horvat deal and the 1st in the Miller deal and immediately relaying it while the GM of the team on the other side could wishcast a 1st overall pick into the deal.

And it's not literally impossible. But you look at the standings and if the Rangers can't finish ahead of 13 teams, then they will reload and do what they can to finish mid to high the following year. This isn't a team that has the choice of rebuilding.

So this pick would likely be worth less as more time passed, just as the Hronek pick would have gone down a bit in value without the possibility of it being a lottery pick the following year.

I think people who expect our offense to plummet are incorrect.

Our offense has been horrendously anemic because we had no D to move the puck to our forwards when the Hughes pairing wasn't on.

With MP and Willander coming, we are going to have a team that will be very, very hard to hem into our own zone.

We will finally have guys hitting our forwards in stride.

I can't tell you how utterly pathetic our breakouts have been. Most of our D have also been cycle breakers in the offensive zone. Since when they get the puck, it's off the shin pads, or into the corner for another contested puck.
-
I think people are also sleeping on Drew O'Connor.

I've seen a handful of Penguins games the last couple of years and he always pops. I have also seen him play off Crosby fairly successfully meaning he has the hockey sense to play up the lineup, at least for short bursts.

But one of the things that the Canucks lost from last year was speed, size, and forechecking up front. Losing guys like Mikheyev and Lafferty made sense cap-wise, but it also cost us transition speed and forechecking acumen.

So he's a nice add for us to reclaim that identity.

A solid defensive player like MP who can transition the puck will be amazing for unlocking Hughes a bit from having to do literally everything both ways.

Obviously this trade makes no sense if we don't re-sign one or both so I can only assume that it's almost a fait accompli.

Hurting his legacy how? His legacy is cemented as a top 5 player all time. His age 36- 40 seasons will change that?
Crosby is not totally cemented as a Top 5 player. There's an argument to be made that he is there now, but there's a guy playing currently that could surpass him depending on how his career transpires.

The Top 4 are mostly untouchable. No one else is.

Who playing now could move ahead of Crosby in the tier of the all time greatest?

The fact both Allvin & Rutherford were in Pittsburgh makes an extension feel like little more than a formality.

They know who he is, they know what he brings to the table. The only question is if the increasing salary cap changes the ask, but Pettersson is a pending UFA because the Penguins never offered an extension, not because he didn't want one. If Vancouver offers something within the vague parameters of market value I'd bet he signs pretty quickly. I don't think maximizing his value has ever been a prerogative.

I'm not saying he'll sign for cheaper than market value, I'm just saying that he's not the type of player I'd expect to get close enough to free agency that he has to try it to see what's available. I know it's the stereotype and I don't want to corner all Swedes into that role...but Pettersson is Swedish as f*** and I think this will be a very comfortable place for him.

Completely agree!

Everyone on a Hockeys Future type board will of course value draft picks and secretly run tankathon for their favorite team until June.

I also believe it to be true that GMs with hopes of "the bowen byram" happening for them will value that pick a lil extra with the Bo and JT conditions.

Outside fans dont seem to grasp how badly we've been chasing competent defenseman for the last 50 years.

I remember posting last year, during good Ian Cole, where it blew my mind after 5 teams in 5 seasons, Ian Cole was the ultimate saviour for our defense.

Like dude was available for a 3rd at any given time while Vancouver cycled Pouliot Bartowski Biega ect for the last 8 years.

Canucks defense is perpetually sooooo bad that Ian Cole was a godsend. And we couldnt even keep him.

Marcus Pettersson, is prime Derian Hatcher (ok rich matvichuk) compared to what we've iced for the last two decades.

The team is better off with a solid d-core that can actually play minutes so Quinn can take a breather.

Players want help now; they don’t care about picks. I’m sure Hughes, and other Van players, are pleased their management used that Rangers’ first for M. Pettersson.

They've actually stumbled into two.

What you mentioned, yes, but also that other teams don't actually seem all that interested in trying to make deals work.

With Zadorov, the Flames wanted picks and to not retain, Chicago needed a body so they took Beauvilier for a 5th, which was then flipped for Zadorov.

The Canucks needed a top pairing D, but nobody wanted to trade one for Horvat so they just took a 1st and flipped it to the Red Wings for Hronek.

They needed to get rid of Miller but nobody wanted to give a 2C and a top 4D, so they took a 2.5C and a 1st and flipped it to the Penguins for a #3LD, the teams biggest weakness.

It just feels like it's been so long since we've legitimately had 2 certifiably top 4 dman. Now to have 3? And a slew of more than serviceable bottom pair defense? And the absolute pinnacle of all these trades that we should be able to send Juulsen to the Hamburg Freezers? Feels nice for a change

Two years and two days ago, if you told me we'd be trading Jt AND Bo..

-Id just assume we completely fixed the D

-Petey must be a Mackinnon level superstar

-We must have steller young prospects

-We must have replaced Bo and Jt at #2 and #3C

But we imploded instead because its the Canuck way. We still need a #2RHD so we didnt even get one of those above fully.

And yet, the sky isnt falling. The path forward is kind of clearer.

I forget who on radio today but they mentioned we literally pulled off a Pat Quinn type masterpiece where we sold Garth Butcher for four quarters again last night.

But on paper yeah, Courtnall, Ronning and Momesso dont look as promising as Jay Tee Millllllller.

This is where we are at. Pat added Dana Murzyn later that same day, Allvin aint done yet either.

Adding a 28 year old, minute eating top four D is what Allvin/Rutherford wanted. For sure they had an agreement in principle with Dubas providing they could get that first from the Rangers for Miller.

Pettersson was probably decided and agreed upon the whole time. We always had our 1st to send.

I just posted this in the other thread before you posted..

They never in their wildest dreams thought this season would go off the rails like it has.

Every callup and recall ounce of savings was entirely for Marcus Pettersson or comparable D, after we have a great year, in managements eyes.

Space for a top 4 D. Thats been the goal.

We woulda traded our own 1st, plus a 2nd to dump whatever salary was required even after the cap gymnastics.

The fact they now have all this capspace because they had to trade away a core member, before they even got to Boeser, must sicken them.

I feel like Allvin's added chippyness this year has been a bit of frustration, and a bit of being pissed he finally was out of LTIR, screwed around every waivers eligible player he could all year, and now its all for nothing HAHA.

Petey for a Canucks 1st has been telegraphed all season I feel like, just didnt think it wouldnt be ours.

Im thinking the fact we did the trade when we did probably sped up the process and now Dubas says well I want that one instead, is the only change.

A situation he caused himself by over playing Heinen in situations he had no business in and then struggled and dipshit Sullivan had to limit his ice time because of it.
Mrs. Jarry is back with her neverending "over playing" excuse.
How's your boy doing down in WBS, did they give you good seats to witness his rise as a mega superstar on any other team like brothers Sprong and Kappanen?

The Jarry family's life nemesis is still coach, and nothing can be done about it.
How about we crawl back under the psychotic rock we were resting under for the sake of bandwidth?

Mrs Sullivan, log off.

if Chytil wasn’t injury prone and M.Pettersen had another year on his contract, I’d like the two trades a lot more.

Random MP contract fact—for the 19-20 season, Pittsburgh was in cap hell and MP needed a new contract. He signed a one year deal for $874,125 which was way under his value. The next year he signed a 5 year x $4,025,175 contract. If you add the 874,125 to 5x4,025,175 and then divide by 1+5 you get $3.5M per year. So, the (seems obvious) speculation is that MP helped out the Pens by taking less his initial year, in is actual 6x3.5 contract.

Not really a fan of Pettersson. One of those players that CAN play up the lineup... but ideally doesn't because they are exploitable, unreliable, streaky, and error-prone.
