If we're talking young players/assets getting moved in a trade?

No way Howard should be moved for anyone. Geekie on the other hand? I think he gets moved for the right deal.

But I would prefer to keep him.

I’ve been excited about Howard since the start. Peep that post history. And I’ll be the first to admit I’m wrong if he’s not an nhler, but he has all the tools. It’s exciting that we can pick up a top 9 player for nothing this season. Come at me bros

No, he shouldn't, and ufa's to be are likely the main targets (or at least several main ones). Just because they are a ufa doesn't mean they won't or can't be re-signed.
When a team is fighting for a playoff spot, no trade will help them become a contender. It's just a waste of assets.

I kinda agree with this 🤷

95% of the league is fighting for a playoff spot.

We don't need to be head and shoulders above everyone else in the league to win a Cup, lessons we've learned already. I guess some of you are ok wasting the prime years of our star players because we aren't in contention for the Presidents trophy, I'm not. You can make trades without going all in on short term pickups.

Another very poor take, but it's as expected. The East is fairly wide open this season, and just because Tampa isn't going to be able to coast in like is some previous years doesn't not make them a contender nor does it mean JBB won't be doing what he has pretty much done most years approaching the deadline. He will add players that according to him and the staff, giventhem.a better chance at winning h a title. Some, perhaps all of those adds could be ufa's, and if they help, no problem. Tampa will also have a considerably larger amount of cap space this offseason, so any ufa's he does acquire are likely to be players he sees as those who will be of benefit for multiple seasons to come. This is what a good GM attempts to do when a team's window is open, not worry about some future 1st and 2nd round picks that may help the team in 2029 or beyond.

We know 7 teams in the West and 5 in the East that will make the playoffs. It makes sense for most of them to make trades
For those fighting for the playoffs - Boston, Tampa, Detroit, Ottawa or Columbus - it doesn't make sense. Because their combined chance of winning the cup is zero percent.

Sure, but you need to at least guarantee a playoff spot. Are you confident TB will make the playoffs EVEN if they make a few trades? This team isn't a trade or two away from being decent.

What really wastes your star players prime years is that you're wasting assets in seasons where you're definitely not going to win anything. The salary cap will go up. Pray that Howard is legit, sign a new bottom, and then make trades.

LOL man, you must be a hoot at parties.

It's like the first time the team faces some competition in the standings it's time to bin it all and give up. I feel if you stubbed your toe, you'd call in sick for the week.

I guess to me it's not the standings part that makes me hesitant, it's the eye test. I'm not quite convinced this team is at all built good enough to make a true run. At least based off the 20-22 teams that did.

Im not an expert, but I'm just not seeing it.

Im not 100% saying JBB shouldn't try at the TDL, I just don't know if we're really that good.

This is a fair outlook IMO. We haven’t looked great lately

I fully expect us to get someone by the TDL, but yeah, if we don’t return to routinely scoring 3+ by then it’ll be more of a Duclair type deal. We looked impressive earlier this year with Moser, even if this extended slump brings up some question marks

Rookie Geekie+ Atkinson, Goncalves, Chaffee, Glendening, Girgensons, Eyssimont
You can waive any of these players and no one will claim them. There are 0 legit NHL players in our bottom six. Does anyone seriously believe that at this point it can be fixed by trades?
Last year we traded a young RD for rental, got destroyed in the first round anyway. If anyone wants to do it again then ok. I personally don't see the point.

Lol, I would bet a large sum of money (and then get paid) that Geekie would not pass through waivers if eligible to be claimed. Both Ace and Chaffee would also have a decent chance of getting claimed as well imo. Things can certainly be fixed and improved by trades, and many view it that way, just not fake Lightning fans like yourself.

Yes, they traded Jack Thompson in order to get Duclair. Let's not pretend that Thompson was going to be some difference maker this season, as he can't even stick in a regular role on the cellar dwelling Sharks. Duclair added a nice boost in the regular season (15 points in 17 games), but like many on the team, fizzled against the eventual champs. JBB will again look to add where he feels they need the most help to give them the best possible chance to win, which is all he can do at the deadline.

It's been a bad 3 or so weeks (yes, weeks, not seasons like you seem to believe), but all of the stats are comparable or better than last year's team; and so yes, I believe that with the right adds they can make another run at it. I guess some got spoiled and deluded that the unbelievably stacked teams of '19-'22 were just going to keep happening every year, despite the near flat cap and players looking to get paid. Only last year's team perhaps didn't look like a team that could.challenge, but every other year since '14 (aside from '17 because of the inordinate amount of injuries), they looked like they could. This year is no different, and so whether it's another player with term, a ufa they re-sign, or a rental that leaves, JBB will likely continue to be aggressive and push for that 3rd Cup as a GM.
