Yes, I agree, however any chance the team has with re-signing Hughes is contingent on the team being good.

Not adding and then just letting him leave isn't how you build a winning team, every team is better with Quinn Hughes than a 1st round pick from a playoff team two years from now.

I agree, Vancouver also has a better track record through trading/UFA than they do drafting. Vancouver is always going to be an attractive market for free agency.

It seems like the Canucks have targeted an interesting market inefficiency.

Taking the 1st in the Horvat deal and the 1st in the Miller deal and immediately relaying it while the GM of the team on the other side could wishcast a 1st overall pick into the deal.

And it's not literally impossible. But you look at the standings and if the Rangers can't finish ahead of 13 teams, then they will reload and do what they can to finish mid to high the following year. This isn't a team that has the choice of rebuilding.

So this pick would likely be worth less as more time passed, just as the Hronek pick would have gone down a bit in value without the possibility of it being a lottery pick the following year.

Our offense has been horrendously anemic because we had no D to move the puck to our forwards when the Hughes pairing wasn't on.

With MP and Willander coming, we are going to have a team that will be very, very hard to hem into our own zone.

We will finally have guys hitting our forwards in stride.

I can't tell you how utterly pathetic our breakouts have been. Most of our D have also been cycle breakers in the offensive zone. Since when they get the puck, it's off the shin pads, or into the corner for another contested puck.

I've seen a handful of Penguins games the last couple of years and he always pops. I have also seen him play off Crosby fairly successfully meaning he has the hockey sense to play up the lineup, at least for short bursts.

But one of the things that the Canucks lost from last year was speed, size, and forechecking up front. Losing guys like Mikheyev and Lafferty made sense cap-wise, but it also cost us transition speed and forechecking acumen.

So he's a nice add for us to reclaim that identity.

A solid defensive player like MP who can transition the puck will be amazing for unlocking Hughes a bit from having to do literally everything both ways.

Crosby is not totally cemented as a Top 5 player. There's an argument to be made that he is there now, but there's a guy playing currently that could surpass him depending on how his career transpires.

The fact both Allvin & Rutherford were in Pittsburgh makes an extension feel like little more than a formality.

They know who he is, they know what he brings to the table. The only question is if the increasing salary cap changes the ask, but Pettersson is a pending UFA because the Penguins never offered an extension, not because he didn't want one. If Vancouver offers something within the vague parameters of market value I'd bet he signs pretty quickly. I don't think maximizing his value has ever been a prerogative.

I'm not saying he'll sign for cheaper than market value, I'm just saying that he's not the type of player I'd expect to get close enough to free agency that he has to try it to see what's available. I know it's the stereotype and I don't want to corner all Swedes into that role...but Pettersson is Swedish as f*** and I think this will be a very comfortable place for him.

They've actually stumbled into two.

What you mentioned, yes, but also that other teams don't actually seem all that interested in trying to make deals work.

With Zadorov, the Flames wanted picks and to not retain, Chicago needed a body so they took Beauvilier for a 5th, which was then flipped for Zadorov.

The Canucks needed a top pairing D, but nobody wanted to trade one for Horvat so they just took a 1st and flipped it to the Red Wings for Hronek.

They needed to get rid of Miller but nobody wanted to give a 2C and a top 4D, so they took a 2.5C and a 1st and flipped it to the Penguins for a #3LD, the teams biggest weakness.

Pettersson was probably decided and agreed upon the whole time. We always had our 1st to send.

Every callup and recall ounce of savings was entirely for Marcus Pettersson or comparable D, after we have a great year, in managements eyes.

Space for a top 4 D. Thats been the goal.
