[VAN] G Kevin Lankinen signs extension with the Canucks (5 years, $4.5M AAV)

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Some of you are talking like Vancouver just got Lankinen and he's only played a few games. We're now 2/3rds into the season and with Demko injured most of the time Lankinen has been the Canucks starter for the duration. His numbers aren't 'great', but setting the filter at >= 25 GP he's 21st in GS, tied 13th in wins, 19th in sv%, 11th in GAA, and tied 2nd in SO.

I'd say that's well enough to earn a low tier starters salary at this point. It really sucks for Vancouver but this was necessitated by Demko's unreliability, where just as he's back and starting to round into form he's injured again for another few weeks. It's not exactly a buyers market out there for reliable starters at the moment, Lankinen is the Canucks best bet for now.
So his numbers aren't at all different in comparison to last year when he wasn't worth even 1 million AAV, but because he's played more games, he's now worth 4.5mil?

If that's your logic, I disagree.

Take a lot of the skill out of the position by making every goalie the size of the Michelin man. Watch a dozen unheralded goaltenders win cups over 2 decades (of course there are exceptions). Then pay material cap to a 29 year old no one wanted a year ago for posting similar stats to his last 3 years. Okay....

I get the cap is jumping, but this is still a bizarre contract. Don't spend material cap on replacement level goalies in today's NHL. What do some GMs still not understand? This would at least make some sense if he was 24 or something.

"Then pay material cap to a 29 year old no one wanted a year ago"???

It's been said, that He had multiple offers.

Im just saying Lankinen alone has probably helped ensure this management like 2 home playoff gates at the min so rewarding the guy with a contract isnt unheard of.

No one has once said its a "tidy bit of business" so far so we all know its not a homerun or a steal.

We just made a straight up Bernmeiser trade in the span of NHL game the other day.

12 different assets changed hands between the puck drop and final whistle. Do you think we're done?
Exactly. There is reward a career backup then there is this which is almost paying him like a low end started when we have a Vezina calibre starter. I guess they dont want to rely on Demko longer term and thats ok but I am just aprehensive Lankinen is the guy to commit to long term. Or any goalie save 4-5. Look at DeSmith last year. For a half a season he was as good as Demko, then he wasn't even NHL level.

I don't thing we're done but I don't think obtaining top line talent is easy or cheap.

Lankinen went 7-0-2 to start his Canuck career on the road. He singlehandidly earned us 16 out of 18 points while we couldnt win a game at home.

How can anyone watching this team even compare Casey Desmith barely treading water to Lankinen swimming the entire team to shore himself.

Lankinen passed Casey Desmith's high of 15 wins a month ago and has 20 games left still.

Laurent Broissoit has never played more than 25 games ever and he got 3.3 million. Hasnt played a game due to injury/rehab.

Lanks was always getting the Korpisalo, which was signed TWO UFA periods ago.

Yes he won a bunch of games on the road, I was very pleased with his play. He was, along with Quinn the team MVP for the first couple months probably. And then he tread water for a while and seems to be picking it up the last few starts..

DeSmith did something similar, albeit not quite as good as Lankinen this yr where he was playing as good as Demko and even better at times, then he fell off.

This yr Lankinen has 3.5 GSAX, DeSmith has 7.6. They are comparable goalies.

Exactly, it'd be like Broissoit getting a 5 yr 4.5 mil deal off the back of filling in admirably for as a start for 5 months. Broissoit got 2 yrs x 3.3. If Lanks got 2yrs i'd be happy. 5 is crazy for a largely unproven goalie

Why was he always getting the Korpisalo deal? and why is that good for the Canucks to sign? Korpisalo isn't exactly playing well.

Vancouver outshot the Rangers by 27, and lost because he only made 7 of 11 saves.

Are we sure about a five year extension for this?
He has been a bright spot for us this season. It's just obvious he is not a goalie that can handle a full season work load.

He is perfect for a team that has 2 starters and can split starts. If Demko comes back and they can split the starts this could be a good signing.

The term is insane. I made a post on the first page of this thread to that effect.

This dude was begging for a contract and got 5 years on a small sample size of good starts. Stop giving goalies term. There are so few worth it. The downside is just so big for a bad goalie contract.
