It's clear you don't actually watch Demko. His last 3 games he looked a 100% like the old Demko and his movement has been fine for awhile.

Having two very good goalies (one elite) is a good thing and if Demko keeps getting hurt than this lessens the sting.
Yeah and then he pulled himself due to injury from a nothing play yet again. And who can to go in cold and save the game ? Kevin Lankenin.

I wonder what this means for Demko? Any chance they trade Demko now?
It’s no secret Demko is primed NOT to sign another contract in Vancouver. The Canucks already know it too, but he’s content playing out his contract, and then leaving. He has no issues playing in Vancouver. His next contract is a different story though.

That said, we’ll start hearing his name a lot this summer, as the divorce will likely be pushed up a year. That way maybe the Canucks get something in return for a player who’s not going to re-sign.

He’ll mostly be connected to Detroit, LA and Anaheim, and even though he has no trade protection, he’ll be picking where he’s going, unless a team is willing to trade assets away for just one year with him. Not very likely, and if another team is, it won’t be much in return.

Whether those teams mentioned have a spot for him at that time is another story. Can 100% see Detroit trade for him this summer though, with Talbot being part of the package going back to the Canucks. Then Demko and Cossa start sharing the net next season. If it works, that’s probably where he stays to sign, at a decent number too.

At some point Detroit will trade Augustine or Cossa if they keep on their trajectory and keep performing. So don’t count out Demko signing a team friendly deal, to be set as the 1A/B turning into a backup role in Detroit well into his 30s.

There’s a significant reason why he wants to play in Detroit, but LA and Anaheim will also be attractive to him for different reasons. Especially if the Detroit thing isn’t meant to be. Think it’s fair to say Detroit is well aware they have the inside track if they want it.

As for the return the Canucks will get? We’ll see, but since he is going to be picking his destination if he is traded this summer, combined with how he’s played the last two years with his injuries, etc, that’s never good news for the team moving a player. Getting Talbot included in a return would be a big thing for the Canucks. He’s been a better goalie than Demko this year, so they’ll want him in the trade, to make sure they don’t lose a step next season. Then whatever the add is.

It’s not going to break the bank though. Just too many question marks right now. This signing IS Demko’s death nail in Vancouver though. Just in case anyone thought he wouldn't be leaving.

What is linking Detroit and Demko?

Van was stuck with either overpaying to keep Lankonen or go into free agency with an injured Demko so they’d have to sign a guy who isn’t as good as Lankonen for (likely) more. They have Demko signed until July 2026. Gives them time to evaluate him.
And what leverage does Lankinen have to ask for 4.5mil, again? Do you know what happened with him last summer? Do you know how his salary developed between this and the previous season? What, exactly, changed? Is his performance this year somehow so far superior to his performance the past few seasons, that a salary decrease deserves to become a massive raise?

Saved our season. We wouldn't be in a wildcard spot without him. Not even close.
By being .905?

Yeah, few teams would be in a wildcard spot by playing without a goaltender. It's called a roster. This isn't a real reason.

This is akin to the logic that had Chiarelli sign Koskinen to a very similar deal.

It seems kind of extreme. Lankinen has been good for the Canucks and really saved their season...but he's still just a sort of 1b type guy if you're serious. That's a lot of money, and a lot of term to commit to that.

It's fine in the interim because Demko is also on a very friendly, cheap deal. So the two of 'em next year is still less than some teams are paying for the singular starting goaltender. It's entirely manageable. But this basically has to be the writing on the wall for Demko, that he's not going to be a Canuck beyond his current contract. I honestly am just not sure how many teams out there are desperate enough to shell out for a Vezina caliber guy when healthy, but rarely ever healthy type player. It just leaves you in such limbo. The sort of limbo that leads you to signing a guy like Lankinen in the first place, and then extending him at significant money and term.

Demko's durability is just so suspect, it makes things very complicated...because his play when healthy is such a gamebreaking factor.

He's good but this seems a lot for a guy who didn't have a job in August.
To be absolutely fair, he had multiple job offers on the table July 1st, some paying him much more than what he ended up signing for with the Canucks. He opted to wait, because he wanted to bet on himself with a chance to take over the net, instead of being a backup. Looks like he made the right choice waiting for the Canucks opportunity.

I could think of a thousand cheaper options to give time to evaluate Demko. Lankinen's sample size is ridiculously small to earn this kind of deal, just like Korpisalo, Petersen, Husso, Knight etc. before him, even guys with more of track record as a starter like Campbell or Jarry. GMs simply don't seem to learn that you would be ill-advised give long term deals to B level goalies.

That’s exactly where I thought it was going to be.

Has absolutely earned it.

If you’re wondering, here were the comparables.

Logan Thompson: 6 years x $5.85
MacKenzie Blackwood: 5 years x $5.25
Joey Daccord: 5 years x $5
Exactly. That is why he didn't sign a contract last summer. He waited for an opportunity to prove what he has and it paid off. Of course it was a risky strategy but the guy is smart.

I know some of your post history and I usually agree, so I'm curious about this opinion that Lankinen doesn't deserve this/is grossly overpaid.

This looks pretty good to me, gives Vancouver time and options with regards to Demko, 4.5M AAV isn't THAT much with the rising cap, and Lankinen has been solid this year for the Canucks.

I'm not a goalie expert but I've followed Lankinen a bit, mostly by watching recaps ever since he started in Chicago, and I thought he played well (enough) in Chicago, and then in Nashville too. I thought he was going to get a chance to be a 1A after Nashville, the body of work was there. He makes game-saving saves from time to time, he can be clutch, he's got some shutouts, and seems to be playing well with an increased work load. He backstopped Finland to a World Championship and played well there. Not so great at 4 Nations but that's a super small sample size against the best players and I don't think the goals against were really his fault. And he seems mentally stable.

What in Lankinen's past makes you think this is a bad deal?

Every single transaction this management has made since day one has been brick by brick.

People saying this is high are f***ing hilarious.

This is a bargain.

Y'all act like he didn't sign until late because he had no offers. He had plenty of offers, he just wanted to play in Vancouver and he had to wait for the team to iron out the deal and open up space for him.

By the time the extension kicks in in the fall, he will have what…like the 20th+ highest AAV among goalies? And because guys like him and Blackwood are locked up, their deals are going to consistently slide down the average chart, which means by the time Lankinen is like 33 years-old, this may very well be average backup money.

Teams are currently averaging slightly over $1.5m AAV for their #2 goaltenders. I highly doubt that number is going to triple in the next four years.

Generationally bad taste in books

What?!? Those are both fine books. Sapiens is a decent stab at a history of our species. It's Pop History, sure... and knowledge in that field is constantly changing, but not a bad introduction if you treat it as such.
The Dirt is f***ing awesome. I never was much of a fan of Mötley Crüe, but for sheer entertainment, this book slaps. Nikki Sixx's book, The Heroin Diaries is better IMHO, but regardless, The Dirt is a great tale about the rollercoaster that was Hair Metal.
Both books require further research if one is wanting to be become better acquainted with the facts.

Honestly, these selections make Lankinen seem a bit more interesting that the standard NHL player.

Anyhow, I'm okay with this contract. Lankinen is not of the level of a healthy Demko, but he has been solid this season. His numbers look a bit worse than they should, honestly. The Canucks defence was a mess up until recently.

So, maybe it's bit pricey, or a bit long, or a bit much in the way of protections. But with Demko appearing to be quite rickety and Silovs having some serious holes in his game, the Canucks were going to have to either sign Lankinen now, or see what they could come up with through FA or trades. With their backs to the wall, the options would probably have been worse and/or more expensive in terms of contracts or trade pieces.

Seems premature and in what universe has he earned it? Dude has been a backup only so far and will hit career highs in games played this season likely at only 38+ games.

Cancusk doing Canucks things per usual.

Some of you are talking like Vancouver just got Lankinen and he's only played a few games. We're now 2/3rds into the season and with Demko injured most of the time Lankinen has been the Canucks starter for the duration. His numbers aren't 'great', but setting the filter at >= 25 GP he's 21st in GS, tied 13th in wins, 19th in sv%, 11th in GAA, and tied 2nd in SO.

I'd say that's well enough to earn a low tier starters salary at this point. It really sucks for Vancouver but this was necessitated by Demko's unreliability, where just as he's back and starting to round into form he's injured again for another few weeks. It's not exactly a buyers market out there for reliable starters at the moment, Lankinen is the Canucks best bet for now.

This kind of means Demko is done, right?
