So it’s Horvat plus a second for Raty, Beau, Hronek plus a fourth?
In a vacuum it’s not a terrible deal. For a rebuilding team though it’s just more of the same. Trying to compete every year.

It's not terrible if Horvat was worth a contender's a bit more than a late first? Losing Islanders pick + our high 2nd in a deep draft for Hronek is a high price to pay. Hard not to view it otherwise.

Isn't Hronek a legit top pairing D? Or a #3 at the very least? I remember before Detroit got Seider they were projecting him as their long term #1 defender. He looked really good in his rookie season but I haven't seen much of him since.
I’m just going to come out and say it.

We traded a 20th overall pick for a guy we thought was a second liner.

Miller ended up being an elite first line scorer. Consistently healthy. PPG+. Top ten in scoring the last four years.

It has done f*** all to our winning position.

This is a meaningless acquisition unless they can work miracles around it. That is the sad reality of it.

Now they have zero leverage. No cap space and everyone knows they want to win next year.

We all know Hronek is a good player.

It's the timing of the deal and the fact that the 2023 draft was super deep and the Canucks traded away two top 40 picks for... I'm not even sure what.

Who can say with a straight face that the Canucks will make the playoffs next year and have a hope of winning even a couple games?
The plan was to build around the elite players we have now, and I agree with that plan. We need to build around Pettersson, Hughes, Demko, and now Kuzmenko. Getting high draft picks at this point makes no sense with those players around.

Which should have "Lisa needs braces" type alarm bells going off in Allvin's head, but apparently not.

Why does Yzerman make a trade like this with his team is seemingly close? It's because the price paid is too good to pass up.
This is the takeaway everyone needs to emphasize. One of the best executives in hockey was willing to trade one of his best defensemen to the Canucks while in the playoff hunt ...the only reason being they offered a deal he couldn't refuse.

what the f? If Hronek is good then it will cost the Canucks several spots in the draft, so the more he helps the team the worse it is for the Canucks...if he's not good then what's the point?...the only way this makes sense to me is if he's a good player but won't be playing this year because of an injury

I just realized, we're also somehow over the cap for next season already. But the drones have no issue with that, they'll continue to shamelessly try to go out to bat for management and act like this even half a decent move.

A little something to maybe get excited about from the Wings board:

When Hronek has not had to cover for ECHL quality partners, he has been a legit first pair defenseman.

On a stacked Stanley Cup contender he would be a second pair guy. On a bubble team he is a legit 1D.

The only problem Hronek has is that he cannot cover the entire sheet of ice while covering for guys like Lindstrom/Oesterle/Hagg/Chiarot.

You know, the same Chiarot that dragged Seider down to like a -28 before Lalonde finally separated them?

I hope Hronek gets paired with Hughes and rips off 70p next year.

Would he work well with OEL as a 2nd pairing? Ask OEL to be more stay at home? Trying to see what they will do next year.

A quick tear down still isn't entirely out of the question. If we do move Miller, that will be indicative of a tear down. Hronek could still make sense if that is the direction we are going (tear down). Defensemen take time to develop, even top prospects. Years. He's ahead of the curve and fits the age group.

I haven't given up hope for a quick tear down and rebuild. It's still possible, despite this trade.
It’s clearly not what they’re planning. Hronek has only more year at $4.4M before he’s looking for $7M+.

How are those players doing in terms of playoffs recently?

Have some standards, dude.

We also apparently couldn't trade Miller for the guy that would have been available in our slot with that same pick (Schneider)

The mistake with Miller was not selling high and instead re-signing him. That was a great trade for Vancouver.
The bigger problem is that we now have two management groups making the same mistakes.

no idea why we do this trade now

like... wait until the draft at least when teams are salivating over their final lists

i would have been fine moving the NYI pick if they don't like how the 12-15 range of players is shaping up (ie. if they had reinbacher as a target in that range and now he will clearly be gone before that)

seems like we threw in an unnecessary jim benning special of a 2nd rounder too. so much for 5 picks in the top-100.

pretty disappointing. maybe they felt they had to do this to get quinn a partner asap with the departure of schenn.

OEL should be used as an 8th D next season. Press boxed. If they have the opportunity to call someone up like Wolanin, he should not play. He should basically play 5 games a year and us run a 22 man roster.

I’m not disputing that it did not turn out well in a vacuum.

I’m saying that the 99th percentile of best possible outcomes made literally zero difference to this franchise.

There is so much that goes into winning. Seems as though Vancouver does not understand this. Sounds stupid, but it is what it is.

Shows a lack of patience in building a team properly with cost controlled drafted player. I would understand this kind of move if they had a clear contending window in the immediate future but they don't. Pretty much Benning 2.0

Remember when Rutherford was going to retire?

Would have been f***ing nice

We’ll he is injured, so there’s that
