Not only did they pay a premium for the player, but if the player is any good at all, they've also actively devalued their own first round pick.

It's about the dumbest move to make at this time of the year. If you want to trade your high picks, you do it at the draft when they have so much more capital. This is such basic, elementary stuff. It's confounding why you'd so actively cut out your own legs over and over and over again without learning anything.

I'm finding it difficult to follow this team with anything but out of habit.

Best case scenario is the Canucks extend him this summer while his price is reasonable and he turns out to be a good partner for Q. Hughes.

I see him and Hughes on different pairings. Two pairings that can move the puck at ES.

JR needed to find 3 top 4 Dmen. They just added 1 for the right side. The next two D need to be good penalty killers, they don't need to be offensively amazing. Size remains an issue. Hughes, Hronek, Bear, Dermott, Burrows, they need a bit of size and bite.

Does Bear still fit? Does Schenn come back as the rh 3rd pairing guy. What does Livingstone think as the spots disappear.

Not that I'd knock back Chychrun. Arizona want a top 8 pick? Rutherford must be thinking about dangling it.

Gone from hoping for NYI to just miss the playoffs and give us #13-14 OA pick to hoping they go deep into the playoffs or miss by a lot and keep this year's pick and their pick next year is 20+.

I may be incorrectly referencing the poster who said it, I think it was @m9, but yes, this does remind of the JT Miller trade: An overpayment at the time that turned out better than expected, against the odds I would say. But a trade that was ultimately futile when focusing on futures.

This could again be the right trade at the wrong time if Hronek is better than projected as an upside. Again, if he's _better_ than he's projected. If he's the same or worse... Yeah. I don't like those odds.
