I suspected they would trade this pick after Rutherfords outlook on picks as "4 year waits".

They're going to try and throw together a playoff competitor for next year and the end result will be terrifying.

The thing is, if we had gotten Hroken + Beau + Raty from a Horvat trade, I would've been really happy. But the NYI pick was a really good pick, I feel like thats where they really won the trade.

They must be higher on Hronek than anyone they'd be able draft at that position (assuming it doesnt pass into being unprotected next year, and if it does, lol). Maybe they already know someone like Reinbacher will be gone and they're not interested in anyone else with that pick. But still, makes me uneasy. Even if it works out its not a good trade.

I really don't want to defend the trade in any way but Detroit is in the playoff hunt, even if it is unlikely, and Hronek is their #2 icetime leader.

Which should have "Lisa needs braces" type alarm bells going off in Allvin's head, but apparently not.

Why does Yzerman make a trade like this with his team is seemingly close? It's because the price paid is too good to pass up.

Hronek was tied for 2nd in Detroit in scoring. He was really pulling his weight for that team.
We all know Hronek is a good player.

It's the timing of the deal and the fact that the 2023 draft was super deep and the Canucks traded away two top 40 picks for... I'm not even sure what.

Who can say with a straight face that the Canucks will make the playoffs next year and have a hope of winning even a couple games?

Horvat & a 2nd for Raty, Beau, Hronek, 3rd

*If you are someone who gets triggered about the reality the Beau was a salary dump at the time of trade, ignore this next part*

Early 2nd = Raty
Future Considerations = Beau & 3rd

Horvat & a 2nd for Raty, Beau, Hronek, 3rd

4th not a 3rd

It's like the same people saying stuff like this will be the same people bitching when they realize Hronek isn't going to get nearly the same opportunity here as he got in Detroit and that there is a good chance that his play in the last month will continue here. Detroit has been playing good hockey the last month, his underlying numbers during that stretch are absolutely concerning, and inspite of that we still paid out the ass.
Hey, stealing Halloween candy is serious business.

Isn't Hronek a legit top pairing D? Or a #3 at the very least? I remember before Detroit got Seider they were projecting him as their long term #1 defender. He looked really good in his rookie season but I haven't seen much of him since.

What the f*** is their problem? Seriously what the f***? Seriously can a Canucks fan went by one day without being disappointed? is something good really that much to ask for? At this point, we might as well trade Patterson and Hughes, because they sure ain't going to stay around when their contract is up. No good players will want to play for us.

Oh and now the Canucks cap looks even more brutal for next year.

It puts pressure on them to either trade away money while giving away more assets as well as make stupid buyouts that will butcher the cap structure even more.

Hronek is 100% the type of defenceman I expect this management to go for and I don’t even mean that as a criticism. Look at the D they created in Pitt when they won cups: all can skate, all can pass, so much mobility and skill. It’s great and so difficult to forecheck.

My issue here is not the player. It’s the cost.
Cost + timing + no bad cap sent back

Look at what moving cap without taking any back cost last offseason. Add Hronek in the offseason for a 2nd and the reaction would be completely different.

A quick tear down still isn't entirely out of the question. If we do move Miller, that will be indicative of a tear down. Hronek could still make sense if that is the direction we are going (tear down). Defensemen take time to develop, even top prospects. Years. He's ahead of the curve and fits the age group.

I haven't given up hope for a quick tear down and rebuild. It's still possible, despite this trade.

I always liked Hronek but why would Detroit trade a youngish top 4 RHD? Unless the Wings have a bigger plan and faith in someone else who they think is better, this just looks like an overpayment that suprised Detroit so they couldnt say no.

Also not a complete impossibility the Islanders bomb next year and that pick becomes a lottery ticket the Canucks traded.

This is a huge gamble by Alvin, I really hope it works out for us and doesnt bite us in the ass for years n years n years

i lived in ann arbor from 2018 to 2021. i went to probably 40 wings games over that period. he's definitely an nhl defender but last summer you probably could have acquired him for a 2nd round pick. he's struggled to establish himself as a top 4 defender until this year
He was coming off a season where he scored at nearly .5 points per game and averaged 22 minutes per game. I know that's only stats, but even so, that in no way sounds like a player you get for a 2nd round pick.

Even if you do think Hronek is the next Devon Toews, it's undeniable that this team is allergic to ELCs. Unless we somehow follow the Tampa model (Hint: we can't offer the same weather and lack of taxes) it just can't work. And that's assuming this team takes the next step - they're still going to be an incredibly flawed team with or without Hronek that has a low chance of making the playoffs and even if they do, they're going to get destroyed by a Colorado, or an Edmonton.

I didn’t even realize we traded our 2nd pick for OEL when that trade happen because I was so pissed off and in a rage coma we gave up a top 10 pick

Glad I can finally take in the magnitude of this overpayment and all its glory

Glad We finally found Quinn Hughes a partner who actually shoots right handed after 4 years …………. It just cost a franking fortune

The last part is my worry too. Going to be cheering for the NYI now so we don’t have the worst case scenario where the pick becomes a 2024 lottery pick.
