I believe the reports are that with how the trades shook down, Yzerman looked at the arms race and decided to sell. That was either yesterday or the day before.
I think he never wanted to be competitive this early but was forced to put on a show in order to extend Larkin.

The minute Larkin extends he's selling again.

So it’s Horvat plus a second for Raty, Beau, Hronek plus a fourth?
In a vacuum it’s not a terrible deal. For a rebuilding team though it’s just more of the same. Trying to compete every year.

wow... I feel like this is a bad move for the direction the club is heading. He's due to be overpaid in 2 years time vs us having another 1st and our 2nd. It looks like their trying to rush the rebuild and that usually doesn't turn out good. Kinda disappointed we give up a 1st and our 2nd in a deep draft.

This is brutal, Hronek won't make a lick of difference here. And we trade away a mid-first AND a high 2nd?
Hronek is worth the 2nd at most to me, plus maybe a B prospect.

Every time, it's like why bother? The 1st round pick is way overpayment for a guy who isn't an ideal young defensive stalwart.

I don’t care if he is a good defender, he is not a star defender, This draft is stupidly deep, and we traded Two picks, its f***ed.

I am so incredibly pissed, somebody calm me down.

I never believed it but looks like some doctors are right that known illness eat human brains away. What's going on this year?

So the Canucks trade a 1st and 2nd round draft pick AGAIN?????
A team that has hit rock bottom and is in dire need of draft picks!
A team that has been stung in the recent past by trading draft picks!
In a season where there is a very deep draft!

Damn this regime pisses me off!!!
At this point maybe they should just trade all of their top prospects (not that they have many) and draft picks for the next 3 years and just go all-in for the final wildcard spot next year. High-bar, right? 🤣

At least we'd know there was no other recourse.

What is obvious is that Rutherford is looking at this team having a 1-2 year retool...may as well lose the term 'rebuild' after this trade.
This isn't a re-tool or a rebuild, it's "major surgery" and the operation is getting dicey.

Hronek is the only player he has sold. The reports were that as long as they were in the race they would keep Bertuzzi. They've re-signed Maatta, Walman, and Larkin. Will be interesting if this is the start of a pivot or if it's a move too good to pass up.

Horvat & a 2nd for Raty, Beau, Hronek, 4th

*If you are someone who gets triggered about the reality the Beau was a salary dump at the time of trade, ignore this next part*

Early 2nd = Raty
Future Considerations = Beau & 4th

Horvat & a 2nd for Raty, Beau, Hronek, 4th

It's like Allvin stole everyone's Halloween candy.

It's like the same people saying stuff like this will be the same people bitching when they realize Hronek isn't going to get nearly the same opportunity here as he got in Detroit and that there is a good chance that his play in the last month will continue here. Detroit has been playing good hockey the last month, his underlying numbers during that stretch are absolutely concerning, and inspite of that we still paid out the ass.

My issue here is not the player. It’s the cost.
I think that’s most people’s issues here. They paid two top 40 picks in a supposedly deep draft when 6 months ago a likely better fit in John Marino went for a 3rd and a struggling defensive prospect. They paid a premium because they blew it last offseason and know they can’t do that again. Poor management.
