I would've downgraded the pick, maybe even given it up, to get no retention. But still it's a great trade, shed about $4M for virtually nothing.

Retention and the 2nd not being until 2027 balance out a bit.

All in all, tidy work to give us an additional $4M in cap space while still having our top picks for next year and the year after.
Save $4 million the next two years to only move back 2 rounds. Maybe it’s only me but I don’t value picks 3 years out very highly. Just as a comparison I value our 2024 third round more than our 2027 2nd. This deal looks better now, compared to what it was originally reported as.

712k retention is a big deal in addition of the OEL buyout. That's 5.48M in dead cap in 2025-26.

Something to consider for perspective. Almost every single team in the league has some form of dead cap. LTIR, bad contracts, retention, bonus carry over. Everyone has it.

The key is to limit it. And as of right now Canucks don't have a single bad contact of a player that skates on the team.

Edmonton has 4 times the "dead cap" then we do and they just went to game 7 of the cup final.

We will be fine!

Can agree with Drance on this one. It’s a unique one but when you zoom out it’s a damn good deal. Got rid of $4M on the books for two years in exchange for moving down two rounds in a draft years away. Big brain.

Wierd deal thats structured in a way that both teams benefit.

Win win!

I have a hard time imagining Benning trying to accomplish something even close to this on his Speak & Spell.

To me the the retention brings the trade grade down from a 100% to a 90-95%. Yeah no retention would be nice, but getting 4m cap space for the next 2 years is still a major win.

In a perfect world, you have your prospects hit late in this season or in the 2025 training camp.

Allows you to comfortably move off a guy like Garland next draft and recoup a decent pick.

I'm totally fine with a retention. If this trade didn't happen and we were forced to buy Mik out the penalty this year would've been higher than the 15% plus it would've been horrid next year. Now we're only on the hook for a two year penalty instead of a four year one at far less money than the buyout would've cost us. We gained an extra $4m this year and an extra $2m next year. I'll take that all day long.

Yeah, but don't forget we lost the rights to Lafferty.

Retaining 720k isn't the worst outcome.

We can still sign Kasperi Kapanen to a 4 year 16 mil contract to replace Mikheyev.

I have seen some people not like the deal as much because of the retention. But getting the 2nd changed from a 2025 to 2027 is worth more than 712k. It allows a lot more flexibility in a trade, especially at the deadline, a 2025 pick is gonna hold more value than 2027 pick. Not having a 2025 2nd could have meant they could have potentially lost out on a player or they would have had to include there first instead. For example the Canucks lost out on Tanev because they didn't have 2024 2nd and the Stars did.
