We are veering towards a team without inefficient contracts. Yes, there will be some dead cap, and yes they might sign some tough contracts over the next little bit, and yes that EP contract could be a rough one if he doesn't perform like he can and should, but otherwise we are in a bit of a new era in Canucks land.

curious to know what the Canucks are planning for the off season. They have cap space to do something

I absolutely love the complexity of this trade. Lots of give and take with so many odd pieces. Rights to Lafferty? Both draft picks in 2027? 15% retention? Yesterday we saw someone dump a better player owed less money straight up for a 2nd with nothing coming back.

The Lafferty thing is so weird. Did Chicago really need to get in there before any other team?

the part i don’t understand is why is laf in the trade? he’ll be a UFA in a few days right?

We never have to watch Lafferty or Mik again. We won boys

the weird thing is, for their first thirty-odd games both guys were excellent middle sixers scoring at 20-25 goal paces and looking like future fan favourites. then they each went stone cold.

seems like we can't stop trading 2nd rounders. it will be no 2nd round picks in 4 years now.

i kind of hate that the teams that beat us all did it with an army of second rounders that majorly hit. duncan keith, bolland, bickell, bergeron, krejci, lucic, wayne simmonds (traded for m richards), voynov, to a lesser degree kyle clifford, and even san jose with vlasic and matt carle (traded for dan boyle).

and we were out there with mason raymond.

Only question left: is #65 retired, or just Ring of Honour?

Replacing Roger Nielson or Terry Fox?

No need to replace anyone, he can stand along side

Or he can go where Gassy Jack used to be.

any mik statue needs to have his actual hands of stone welded into the sculpture

Same, it shows our front office is creative to come up with solutions.

Chicago would have asked. He basically carries no value, and the Canucks probably were not signing him anyways. I assume they just like him and want to lock him up pre-July 1. I would view it largely as immaterial to the rest of the deal generally.

So ultimately the Canucks drop 50~ picks in 3 years to move 4mx2.

Also worth noting that by moving the rights to Lafferty, the Canucks have 1m more in cap space until July 1st, which could be relevent.

Can we afford Guentzel, Zadorov, Joshua?

Yes but that's probably ~$17-$18M of our approx. $21M in cap space. Joshua is probably gone to make way for more top-six help and at least one right-side defenseman, preferably two. If you go that route the right side ends up really lean, especially if Myers doesn't come back at the rumoured number.

The 2025 draft is apparently loaded and very deep. It gives the scouting staff some ammo after the lack of picks this year. With $1.2 million being able to get buried in the minors it allows the Canucks to paper down players and use LTIR on the Poolman contract.

Lafferty is UFA so this isn’t the case. They can go 10% over the Cap anyways during the off-season

We'll revisit this in a few days when there will no doubt be some questionable contracts handed out.

Hawks are proving valuable as a 'cap dumping ground' for the Canucks. First Dickinson; then Beauvillier and now Mikheyev, at the price of a couple of second round draft picks; but also added a fifth in this year's draft and a fourth in 2027.

A nice piece of business by Allvin, who's almost certain now to be 'big game hunting' when Free Agent Frenzy opens on July 1st.

The thing I'm worried about with Hughes is if he does plan to go to NJ. Other teams will catch wind of that and not offer a massive package.
Honestly I think the NJ thing is overblown and its extremely unlikely that we see Quinn joining his brothers in NJ during his peak or even prime.

Having Micheyev seemed to influence the Kumenko signing which, for a while at least, might have been deemed the best thing he did for the Canucks. Now both are gone and, given the cap considerations, most are glad for that. Funny how it worked out.

Micheyev had to go and give Allvin credit for getting it done even though he was correcting a mistake he'd made. Lafferty was not coming back any how.

Just hope they can get some other crucial FAs signed in the next couple of days.

It's more likely Jack comes to Vancouver IMO.

I honestly expect it at this point, which I why I find it so hard to hate Jack Hughes.

Going to be crazy when he signs here.

i am really hoping they get joshua done now. but given what dhaliwal said about them thinking that they can create that scenario for a player... perhaps it's time to welcome jordan greenway to the canucks. the interest has always been there and it sounds like buffalo is going to make a play for necas (of course, even before buying out skinner, they have tons of cap space).

That's an interesting take and any reason to think this?

I don't see either thing happening to be honest.
