As a Canucks fan who dislikes Benning, this is not a bad deal at all. Marky is solid. He'll very likely be the starter for at least two of those years.

Lmao at people ripping this deal.
Yes it's a overpayment, but so what? What else are we gonna do? Resign Miller?
Rush Demko?

What options does Markstrom have? Not one team would offer close to this term/AAV. Add to the fact that Vancouver is probably one of the only team's he'll get a chance to win a #1 spot, there's zero incentive for Vancouver to get him locked up for this price.

Only non canuck fans think this is terrible. MArky was really good on a terrible team. He is and will be worth it.

I think a lot of fans around the league are guilty of thinking Marky is still the goalie they saw in Florida that look lost. He's matured quite a bit and Melanson/Cloutier have done a great job molding his technique to match his natural talent.

I hate Benning but this really isn't a terrible deal for a guy most expect to be the canucks starter until Demko is ready.

"Yeah its an overpayment, but so what? What else are we gonna do?"

This is exactly how teams stay bad for so long. How can anyone say an overpayment is not a big deal? Pretty clear that overpaying a few players on your team prevents you from adding talent elsewhere since after all, there is a salary cap...

Considering Ryan miller will be off the books and thatcher demko might be the backup next year or it not, a cheaper backup, the canucks will be paying less then 6 million on their cap for both goalies..it's not a big deal on the cap at all. In fact it will be a bargain.

Markstrom is easily worth this contract. Some people should try watching him play.

I understand defending the move, but there is no way he's "easily worth this contract". John Gibson is a much better goalie and got paid 2.3 million for 3 years

John Gibson played behind one of the best defences in the league so it's hard to say who is better tbh. Markstrom looked solid playing behind a tire fire defence..

"So-and-so will be off the books"... or...."this buys time for this prospect" is such a stupid argument. Whether or not either of those things happen, Markstrom's contract is Markstrom's contract. He had a year left on his deal, why couldn't they wait and see if he's legit?

If Markstrom doesn't work out we have a bunch of high picks as a result. Isn't that how bad teams get better?

With Markstrom/Demko I think goaltending is of least concern.

You mean like this year? You know, when the team was the third worst in the league ... all those picks? Assuming Benning is going to keep next years picks is risky when the team begins to falter. He'll be trading anything of value to shore up his "playoff roster".

I like Markstrom, but this is too much money by about a million a season for what he's shown in this league.

a career high of 32 games in the nhl and they gave him 3.67m per and 3 years. sorry but that is really high.

Markstrom is a UFA at the end of this upcoming season. This new contract doesn't kick in until 2017-2018.

The "minimum wage" for a proven fringe start is usually around 4 million. This is clearly a calculated risk by Vancouver with the expectation that Markstrom will be their starter after Miller.

This is a good move by Vancouver. They see Markstrom everyday and know what they have in him. This is the cost to lock a guy in Markstrom's shoes up. If they wait throughout the season they risk him testing the market.

And I have no problem with msrkstroms deal. So it's not an issue to me. Because I actually watched him play all of his games. Saw this guy face 40 plus shots almost every game and steal wins behind a horrible defense .

And miller will be off the books. Factual

You do understand that he's a UFA at the end of the year right? What if he has an amazing year and walks? It's a gamble by Vancouver but one that I think most Canucks fans are happy with.

Yet Bieksa and Stoner are cap dumps. It's funny how HF works.

Exactly. "OH this move isn't bad because it can make us worse so we get a higher pick!!"

If thats the case, sign some kid on the street for 10 million. You'll finish last 100%. Make me GM!

Who is exactly threatening to steal him away from Vancouver? Bishop will be a free agent, i'm sure a few young goalies will be available due to the impending expansion draft. How many teams are exactly looking for goalies?

no I fully expect Marky to play well and earn every cent of this contract. He's a very talented goalie that has really matured over the past two years.
