That's an underwhelming return for a solid player in Norm and a niche useful shooter in Covington. Bledsoe is an acceptable bench guy at this point his career, Winslow is a bust, and Johnson is a cheap young defensive wing with no offensive game to speak of (fairly replaceable). And swapping seconds is basically a wash.

The Raps are f***ing back baby.

I know most of y'all got the Leafs to cheer for but the Jets are trash so I gotta live through the Raps for the rest of the year lol.

Now if we could get a bench piece or 2 before the deadline that would be tight.

They aren't world beaters or anything, but they are a fun group to watch.

4 years left at close to $20M per - that’s a lot of money for a role player on a non contending team… It was more about dumping that salary and getting under the luxury tax as well as opening up space to sign Simons this off-season.

A 4 game winning streak won't change my mind. I think the starters are fine. Bench is pretty awful. We'll see if they can keep it up
You wouldn’t know what you’re watching anyway. You’re the guy who cries and calls them the Maple Leafs.

This is a growth year and they’re already ahead of schedule with Barnes, Trent, OG and even Siakam playing better than many expected. They’re building to win another championship, not just to appease the casual fans.

I asked a buddy of mine who knows the NBA quite well just yesterday where he would rank the starting 5, he said top 12 in the NBA but the bench would be maybe 30th. I think he might be underestimating the starting 5 myself because they could easily finish top 12 overall so if the bench is 30th, the starting 5 would have to be at least top 10, maybe higher than that even but whatever. So you're right in sayin that the bench is awful, the starters are more than fine but overall, it's amazing how good this team is!

Spot on!

I think it's a myth to think that the Raps shouldn't really put themselves in the most optimal position for this year. We have our core players already in Barnes, Fred, OG, Pascal and Trent. We really lack a veteran/reliable bench guy who can be a floor general and we sorely lack a good solid C. If I'm a betting man, we're getting a C with term and the right age fit (23-26 years old), we're going to get a backup guard and potentially another big man.

From the rumored names, I think Gallinari is a good fit for a veteran presence who can come off and play a role. Poeltl seems like a better fit than Turner IMO, just because he's a former player and friends with the players on the team and has familiarity with the system. He also won't cost as much as Turner. And I think the last big guy we will secure most likely from the deal where we ship out Dragic. Maybe if the Dallas trade come through we can see a guy like Powell/Brown + Burke come back which fills 2 secondary needs for this team.

Starting lineup:

Siakam
FVV
OG
Poeltl
Trent

6th man:
Scottie

Bench:
Burke
Powell
Banton
Boucher (if we still have him after the deadline)

Playoff time you run with the starting 5 and Scottie. Sprinkle in Boucher/Powell as needed. Having Scottie come off the bench helps cut down the starters' minutes to around 33-35 a game and if we can build a good rotation even more so. Having guys like Siakam and Co play at the 5 already allows him to slip down there if we need to bring Scottie in for Jakob.

I think we can go toe to toe with anyone in the league not named the GS Warriors. They are the only team that I think can shoot our lights out from the perimeter. But we can take the East.

We've all seen it this year. Had we gotten a competent C from the beginning of the year, we can probably tack on at least 4-5 more wins on our record right now and that would put us right in contention for home court.

I'd love to add Powell, Poeltl and Burke but I don't see how we have the assets to pull that off. Seems like a pipe dream to me.

I think we have the assets.

1st round picks
Dragic (who Dallas specifically wants or is at least rumored to want)
Watanabe
Boucher
Flynn

I could see something like:

To SAS:
2022 1st + Malachi Flynn

To Tor:
Jakob Poeltl

and

To Dal:
Goran Dragic
Conditional 2nd

To Tor:
Dwight Powell
Trey Burke

I thought you meant Norm Powell for some reason, never mind. :)

Grange with a nice article saying Raps are in a great position at the deadline. They have Dragic's contract plus every pick so they can add a good player. Other teams have pick issues so they aren't in the same spot. They prefer a playmaker who can shoot over just a shooter or a big.

Aware of their needs, Raptors approach trade deadline in strong position - Sportsnet.ca

Will it come down to the wire?

Probably, just because it almost always does. Most executives don’t want to commit too soon on the slim chance that it could preclude them from getting in on a late-emerging opportunity, or in case a deal they like better moves from the back burner to the front and they’ve missed their chance by acting too soon.

But there is a quiet confidence that they are well-positioned to make a deal that will help their red-hot club – winners of five straight and 14-6 in their last 20 starts and suddenly in sixth place and out of the play-in tournament – both this season and in the future.

The tools at their disposal – Goran Dragic’s expiring contract, a basket of future first and second-round picks as well as some players on rookie deals or even Chris Boucher and his expiring contract – haven’t changed, but their position has strengthened on a couple of fronts

Two noteworthy deals have already gone down: on Friday the Portland Trail Blazers gave up two good players (Norm Powell and Robert Covington) to the Los Angeles Clippers for a return centring on a second-round pick and the rights to an unproven rookie taken late in the first round last summer, and on Sunday the Cleveland Cavaliers landed Caris Lavert from Indiana for Ricky Rubio’s expiring contract, a lottery-protected first and two seconds, essentially.

The moves give a pretty good indication that the Raptors plan to land a quality rotation player for Dragic’s expiring contract and a first-round pick seems to be on solid footing.

It’s likely looking even better now that the Cavaliers have moved early. With Rubio’s deal and all their picks as well as pending restricted free agent Collin Sexton, the Cavaliers could likely have matched or trumped most Raptors offers.

With them having played their cards, Toronto’s position likely has only improved.

The Raptors also have the benefit of their own hard-earned upward trajectory. It would be a mistake for them not to extract some value from Dragic’s deal, but they’re not desperate.

I think Poetl would cost a lot more. He has better then OG Anunoby level win share/82. He's the complete package defensively at center with a couple years of control at a good price.
