The Nemesis
Semper Tyrannus
His dad says he needs to play and blames Nurse for not doing it now that Kyle isn't around to hound him about it.
Ok, sure. Nurse has a problem with sticking to his tight rotation of trusted guys. We see it in how he is going to ride Fred into the ground this season and has a rotation of maybe 7 guys he trusts with regularity.
But.....
Flynn is firing bricks this season. And that's supposed to be his bankable skill.
In 231 minutes across 27 games he's shooting .429 from 2-point range and .273 from deep
in 99 minutes in the G League across 3 starts he's shooting .348 from 2pt range and .267 from deep.
Over half of his FGAs come from 3-point range where he's been awful. The next biggest bucket is the much-derided mid-range shot (16 feet out to the 3p line) where he's actually shooting even worse.
By several advanced metrics he's the worst guy on the team who's still in the org (so discounting some of the hardship signings and Sam Dekker) and not hurt (David Johnson). The only guy who comes close to being as bad as him is Banton. But Banton is also a freshly drafted 2nd rounder who is known to be a project and who wasn't chosen to do the one thing he can't do right now.
Should Flynn play more to help figure out if he has potential future utility? Probably, if the team is willing to concede that the playoffs or play-in tournament are a pipe dream and accept that they're gonna lose a fair amount of games. But as long as they want to be competitive they're not going to have a place for an undersized PG who can't shoot and seems to be a total black hole offensively.
Obviously the guy's dad is going to stick up for him, but let's not pretend that Nick Nurse is out there intentionally screwing over a player for petty, silly reasons. He's paid to get this team to win and I have not seen one compelling case that Malachi Flynn as he is right now helps the Raptors achieve that goal.
