I definitely did the "Hold my Gameboy behind the book I'm reading" shit.

f*** Accelerated Reader.

After I put in effort and failed my first quiz, I just straight up stopped trying and took zeroes on it throughout middle school.

I'm amazed how much shit I was able to play without retribution though, for years I played wolf 3d, doom, and heretic without penalty and those were games where people got f***ed up and demons got beat the shit out of

I definitely did the "Hold my Gameboy behind the book I'm reading" shit.

f*** Accelerated Reader.

After I tried really hard and failed my first quiz, I just straight up stopped trying and took zeroes on it throughout middle school.
It's so stupid they think that you can't do anything. "Take your gameboy" "take your console" I'm just going to unlock it anyway.

I remember reading a story of starcraft streamer Artosis, his parents took away his modem so he couldn't play starcraft and he just installed a new one lol

Artosis was 14 years old when he was introduced to StarCraft at his best friend's house, where he watched his friend play.[1] He received a copy of the game for his 15th birthday and played it casually with friends.[1] When bedridden with a broken ankle and metal implants after a trampoline accident, he began to play StarCraft competitively.[1] While his friends lost interest, he continued to compete over the Internet.[1] Artosis has said that after his first year, he had spent about 1,200 hours in-game, up to 16 hours a day, and knew he could play in tournaments.[1] As his StarCraft habits began to affect his life, his parents confiscated his dial-up modem and computer peripherals, which he circumvented with replacements.[1] Despite his parents' requests to desist, Artosis decided in high school that he would pursue the game as a career based on the game's popularity in South Korea.[1]

I had shit reading comprehension (and probably an undiagnosed hyperactivity disorder), so I loathed reading books as a kid.

Accelerated Reader made it even worse by making you feel like a dumbass for failing the quiz and not letting you try again.

I would lie to my parents about taking and passing the quizzes, then just deal with the shit storm at the end of the semester.

Age limits on booze, tobacco, and lottery tickets are okay.

Age limits on mature media are somehow not okay?
You also act like people are going to adhere to those limits

I type abnormally fast and that is because of Mavis beacon.

thanks.

Also growing up we had chess master 3000. they had a lot of violent games when I was a kid. they were on Nintendo or Sega. yeah I played them at a friend's house so I did play street fighter and mortal kombat. but at home I was playing Duke nukem 1 and 2 for dos and freeware windows games.

in those days the games you purchased used to have a folder full of demos.

I remember playing this educational PC game in school with knights and wizards and shit.

I think it was math based. I remember you had to use an old-school keyboard with a tracking ball :amazed:

Me and this other kid were the only ones in our class smart enough to actually beat it.

Well, it is illegal to buy those things for minors.

Sure, it doesn't stop everyone, but the mitigation is better than doing nothing about the issue.
it didn't stop anyone. any proposed legislation wouldn't have changed shit.

Observe…..

years later rdr2 would do the same with the women's rights protester

the video of people in RDR2 tying her to a horse and taking her to the swamp

there is already outrage online of what people are saying they'd do to some of the NPC's in GTA VI lol. "YOU CAN'T SAY THAT". The cancel culture has already begun. "NPC'S HAVE RIGHTS TOO!"

Age limits don't entirely prevent underaged drinking, but it definitely mitigates the amount of underaged drinking.

"We've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas!"
so you're trying to make it harder for kids to play gta.

even though studies have shown that kids aren't affected by gta.

or that i could play copious amounts of gta and then be inspired to drive around running people over on the street

The amount of losers that feel comfortable about broadcasting their horniness about video game characters' butts makes me want to leave this planet.

I agree that "video games make serial killers" is bullshit that was pushed by Jack Thompson.

But to say that mature media has absolutely no affect on children is just a wild claim that makes no sense.

Show the Texas Chainsaw Massacre to a 12 year old and tell me they won't be affected by it.

If mature media has no affect on children, then it stands to reason that all media has no affect on children.

Hear that, parents? Just shove an iPad in front of your child's face for 12 hours a day and pat yourself on the back for being a "great parent" that carelessly gives their child everything they want.

also re: media the games we grew up with didn't have online play

online play is toxic af now. every cod lobby is full of people cursing. even madden and fifa are toxic. they're trying to curtail it but it's pretty big at this point. score a goal, griddy on someone, they start cursing you out. back in my day you wouldn't even have an online game to play with on 56k.

You aren't wrong about media these days, heck social media is toxic af for young people. There was a story on the news where the government made this fake AI generated 13 year old on social media (META) and within a few minutes she had hundreds of sexually explicit images sent to her. disgusting.

in the past there was no regulation but today? maybe. i can see your point.
