it's because this is the first time the US had the World Cup since 1994.
American viewership for the World Cup vs the MLS should be enough to illustrate that Americans care more about the spectacle of the World Cup than they actually like soccer.
The Olympics is another example. Most people don't give a single shit about the majority of events, yet they watch anyway because "Woo America #1".
Meanwhile, I couldn't care less about America winning, but I want to see sports like water polo and handball on TV regularly.
