"Best in Class" is the new FYOUS. We appear to have missed on the FYOUS timeline. No timeline was given for "Best in Class:" or does every thought have to qualify. We need to make moves ... make the move a winner .. not everything is instant gratification.

Yes, "Best In Class" might be the new "FYOUS" unfortunately. Giddy rah-rah talk from the new owner after downing a few celebration bubblies!
It might, but it's not unreasonable to have not made any deals yet. The deadline is still 4 days away. Most teams haven't done anything yet.

A new owner says they want to be Best in Class .. I can't recall the exact context.. I am guessing he meant wrt to bringing in people to the organization. Its a good goal and it sells a good objective. Its subjective to a large degree who is best in class given no criteria. I am not going to hang every move or decision on it. I am giving him a pass on saying it. Its very early in this new reign and they have a lot of work to do to get this ship turned around and going in the right direction and it encompasses almost every area of the front office , the coaching and the roster. So many factors to consider. It certainly is beyond one person and it certainly is beyond any one of us here on this forum.

It is hard to deny change is needed with how much of a train wreck outside acquisitions have been in general, and I assume Staios and Co. saw it too, but I can't help but assume it's a tough position to fill midseason. If they're making changes, they'll likely be making hires in the summer when contracts expire imo.
I wonder about his relationship with other GMs too. Apparently Rutherford had called Yzerman about Hronek before and Yzerman said no...but if I do, I'll let you know. 2 years later he called him up and said you have first dibs, nobody else knows. 1 hour later the trade happened. I doubt PD had those relationships.

I am waiting to see what other changes are made and hope they improve the team in all ways: drafting, trading, UFA signings, coaching, scouting, etc. It will take some time to implement changes that will make a difference as some of the changes require quite a bit of time to come to fruition (e.g., scouting, drafting, development, coaching).

I remember a long time ago watching something about CEOs and they were talking about this new guy that came into a manufacturing company to try and turn it around and make it profitable. This was a long established culture of blue collar guys. And he came in with a mission statement about making the factory floor safer. The workers all scoffed. Who is this geek that thinks he can tell us what is best. And how is that silly slogan going to make us more profitable, it will make us less. Long story short, that subtle little one sentence mission statement was a butterfly flapping its wings that led to great things.

Melnyks mission statement was F. You’s. I don’t think anyone really took him seriously. Even when people bring it up now it is in sort of a whiny childish pouting kind of way - but you promised me a pony. No one really believed it.

Setting the tone from the top is really important. I like the one they are setting now. Unlike before, this is a culture that can win. Usually we say in year 5 you can start to judge a new GM.

I haven't seen anything posted, but I would hope the first order of business was filling up the management and office folks. More amateur and pro scouts. Having people in the office to make sure the Dadonov situation doesn't happen again. We'll have to wait til summer for a new coaching staff. But the scouts should be in place already.

I know nothing has happened yet under the Staios reign, but I love hearing that the market will dictate if we make moves. In other words, no wasting capital on bandaid solutions, no overpaying just to do something. Build this thing deliberately and intelligently.

Nothing to grade him on yet in terms of moves, but maybe nothing is something. They keep a tight lid on things as well, which is also a breath of fresh air.

What I’m hoping for — assuming Norris is out for the season — use that cap space to take contracts for picks or useful players that will help us going forward.
Same here. Staois has to prove he can't be bullied or negotiate out of desperation. I'd be thrilled if he makes a move that nobody sees coming I.e. doesn't back himself into corners. Buy low, sell high. Acquire assets and win trades. Take advantage of suckers rather than be one. Do not show your cards unless it benefits you to do so.

So make trades with the Pierre Dorion’s of the world

Make it a pepperoni, throw in a second rounder and we have a deal!
Can't wait to see EJ Emery drafted to be the Kanata Gabriel Pizza's newest delivery guy, might be a few years of development needed answering the phone and taking orders but in two to three years he's going to be a top 4 deliverer...

Thank god.

Yes and no. Would have liked a little bit more urgency in terms of assessing the coach and making a change there, could have perhaps salvaged a season had they replaced him sooner. I think a more experience front office would have acted sooner than they have.

I think it's pretty obvious this team make up is inherently flawed. More panic decisions without proper evaluation just leads to more if the same. Wouldn't matter how good this team is with this goaltending. They took over in pre season. I'd rather they give everyone a fare shake before making drastic decisions. As fans we all want immediate results of course but it was obvious Dorion and Melnyk were never cut out for success at this level. They built this, it's Staios and Co's job to identify the good pieces and which ones to part ways with. Without doing a proper evaluation would have been irresponsible.

I agree that a new GM (meaning inexperienced) will need time to show us what he can do. I would prefer to have a GM who has already shown what he can do. Same for a coach.

I am reserving my initial judgment of Staios until the trade deadline.

I did like the fact that he reached out for Tanev, shows the pending RD veteran that this team is serious about his services. Staios seems to be making those types of filler inquiries as part of his longer term plan. We shall see.
