I'm not saying he could or should have done this or that.

I'm saying, considering he hasn't done much of anything, it seems strange to hear that his performance has been "Great".

Shouldn't it be labeled "to be determined" at least? Not great or good.

Wait to call him great once he brings this team a cup.
He's brought in qualified people to fill out management, things like bringing in Martin as a consultant (and eventually interim coach) Poulin, Sean Tierney, and Matt Nichol, these are all significant moves for the long term health of the franchise.

Any moves a GM makescan be labelled to be determined, GMs get judged on long term results. But to look at what he's done so far you can certainly be excited about the long term implications,

Again you totally lose the context of the discussion…. Which was rebuilding the Senators.

Also it was Andlauer who fired the GM, and appointed Staios as the new GM, who yes made a coaching change…which was a no brainer . But as far as trading players, picks or prospects…. Zero, nada, zilch

And he did not fire the goaltender coach, just swapped him out for the Belleville goaltender coach.

If making an obvious coaching change constitutes “a great job” in your world, then your bar is set way too low.

The rookie GM will have the chance, within the next week to begin to make a mark on this franchise, so let’s see what happens…. Will he lose his GM Virginity or does he wait until the off-season…

This team needed a cultural rebuild and a sense of responsibility - you’re only talking about trades.

Ottawa has Been without a coherent culture or proffeosnalism since Mucked was fired - it’s been a Franchise on fire ever since.

I personally will get excited when he moves one of the core. That will signal to me that after a period of evaluation the leadership has made a decision and subsequently acted on the decision. Then we'll wait to see how it pans out

The other stuff - ya I agree they're all little tweaks that should help build credibility/stability

I see. I will label him great when those moves actually show to pay off.

If someone makes moves and the team is still trash, I'm not calling those moves great...at least not yet. I'll be patient though.

So much done outside of this community is why Melnyck never felt like a good fit here. That and the way he acted - our owner actually wore a Leafs jersey to a game once. Guys heart was never here, was always in Toronto and with the Leafs.
Link to the story, as I’m sure I would of heard about that one.

I’m concerned about our amateur and pro scouting group.

For this draft, Mann is gone, who will be the first round picks whisperer to the GM? Who will be finding the late gems?

We need to draft like Dallas.

He did buy kids (Boys & Girls Club) every yr all kinds of hockey equipment & skates & he did quite a bit for the military buying them all kinds of hockey equipment too.
He rolled in an bought a team in bankruptcy. at 1/3 to 1/4 its true cost

He spent the rest of the time, not spending a dime.

He spent little on Ottawa.. Much of his money was spent elsewhere.

He insulted fans. lined up to get as much money as possible. Threatened to move the team. Threatened media. Made real efforts at sabotaging media careers. Used Ukrainian IT experts to injure media.

There is a whole litany of wrong doings!!!!

All the while an Ottawa man saves his life.. So, does he thank the city.. No, he does not build a hospital, or contribute.. There is no Melnyk wing for cancer treatment, or Liver disease,. Kidney disease.. after his life is saved, he insults and threatened. In fact after his life is saved, the dark side of Eugene surfaces.

Check out the OSEG ownership group. See how many things in Ottawa are named after them.. BECAUSE THEY BUILT THEM.

don't BE IMPRESSED BY HIS NICKLES AND DIMES. he WALKED OUT WITH MILLIONS (WELL his DAUGHTERS DID). He was nothing more than a carpet bagger in this city.

He was a bad man.. but, now he is dead and the whitewashing starts.

He is best forgotten and not defended.

More made up numbers.
In 2003 most valuable team was the Rangers at $272 million.
Lowest was Oilers at 91 million.
Senators in November ‘03 worth $117 million. Team sold April ‘03.

So you think the Senators were the most valuable team in the league, in ‘03 lol.

All the complaining and targeting he did to sell the team for +$800 million more then he bought it for - the man had no class and no integrity

That part started well, but once they (justifiably) let go of Dorion, DJ, Payne, the Front Office got thin again. And the hiring stopped (other than the addition of Poulin) once Staios got busy with his GM duties. We don't have a POHO. Who is Mann's replacement? Is Sean Tierney the only analytics guy?

I assume that whoever pushed for Pinto and Greig is gone. Taking Sandy at 5 was shroud, I don’t know if that was Dorion but it was a great choice. Even Kleven looks like it will be a good to great pick.

It’s not lost on me the crazy number of sheer whiffs we have had as well, and perplexing choices, but it would be nice to know we have some solid scouting talent in our ranks for a really important draft considering the last two.

I know nothing has happened yet under the Staios reign, but I love hearing that the market will dictate if we make moves. In other words, no wasting capital on bandaid solutions, no overpaying just to do something. Build this thing deliberately and intelligently.

Nothing to grade him on yet in terms of moves, but maybe nothing is something. They keep a tight lid on things as well, which is also a breath of fresh air.

What I’m hoping for — assuming Norris is out for the season — use that cap space to take contracts for picks or useful players that will help us going forward.

Pierre Dorion vs. a Potato argument. The Potato wins. Sometimes youre better off doing nothing, and Staios' comments seem to acknowledge that.

Is Dallas "best in class" at drafting? If yes, hire their Chief Scout and a few of their birddogs!

I would feel more comfortable if we had made some improvements to our scouting staff prior to the entry draft rather than "doing nothing" until now.

Perhaps we should have hired the TSN draft guru instead of the colour commentator. :)

It is hard to deny change is needed with how much of a train wreck outside acquisitions have been in general, and I assume Staios and Co. saw it too, but I can't help but assume it's a tough position to fill midseason. If they're making changes, they'll likely be making hires in the summer when contracts expire imo.

Doing nothing is better than doing something stupid; however, it is not "best in class"!
Well, best in class could include not selling low on your assets like Dorion had a habit of. That also requires not backing yourself into a corner with said assets, like Dorion had a habit of as well. Staios has a situation he'll need to handle that he didn't create. I'm interested to see how he does with it, and how he positions himself with acquired players and their contracts.

"Best in Class" is the new FYOUS. We appear to have missed on the FYOUS timeline. No timeline was given for "Best in Class:" or does every thought have to qualify. We need to make moves ... make the move a winner .. not everything is instant gratification.

Yes, "Best In Class" might be the new "FYOUS" unfortunately. Giddy rah-rah talk from the new owner after downing a few celebration bubblies!

Rangers value does not include MSG.
Oilers where is a dilapidated building and other than a brief moment of success, spent 1998-2018 in the toilet. You want a carpet bagger, go see their owner and what he has milked Alberta for.

Ottawa was on the cusp of a cup. In a brand new building. In a city with negligible un-employment. the CTC was 170 M in cost... ~ 250 M in todays dollars. It was in 2003, 6 years old.

It was carpet bagging.

The present owners of OSEG should be kicking themselves in the head for not jumping in.
