Carey Price in the sense that people don't realize how important he is to the organization. He is the difference between a top 3 finish in the East and missing the playoffs entirely...not even exaggerating.

I believe that. There's a time when the Rangers were like that with Lundqvist. The 2011-12 Rangers almost won the Presidents Trophy and would get absolutely eviscerated by the current Rangers team. That was all Hank.

Backstrom for like the 20th time in this thread. Gets no respect.

Agreed on those saying Backstrom

Henrik and Daniel Sedin were underrated, and now are, for the most part, correctly rated. I don't know if anyone trains better than those two, and Vancouver's rest stop toilet of a season last year wouldn't have been nearly as drastic if Henrik didn't get hurt. Maybe Canucks fans should be thankful though, since they might still have Torts had they finished 14th-17th instead of 25th.

Agree that Backstrom is the gold standard in underrated superstars.

That's actually an interesting way of judging current teams vs past teams. Like its one thing to compare them on paper but imagining them playing against each other puts it more into perspective.

On this board with Crosby it's either...

"We have someone else to dethrone him!"
"He's back at being awesome!"
"He's back to not scoring again!"
"He's unseated again as the best!"

Pick one depending on how people feel during that time of the week with Crosby, he's not universally considered the best here, but outside of this board, he is most definitely.

I agree with Nick Backstrom as an underrated superstar, he does a lot and when healthy he still produces like a #1 center.

I think Getzlaf deserves more respect as well.
I don't see Backstrom as elite until this year and even thats debatable so it's hard to underate him IMHO.

Crosby is easily the best player in the WORLD.
NOT MAlkin or some other pretender.

Backstrom plays with the greatest goal scorer of this generation...not underrated. Take away Ovechkin and Backstrom wouldn't put up 70 pts.

The dude who has been in countless Hart discussions this year?

I will admit, though, one of the reasons I won my fantasy hockey league last year is because I drafted Getzlaf way, way later than he should have been available. So maybe you're right.

Backstrom.

Two I'd also say are Max Pacioretty, he might be the quietest star in the league.
Carey Price, people don't realize how important he is, and how good he really is.

Max doesn't belong in this thread imo. He gets his recognition as an elite goal scorer but doesn't put the point totals necessary to be considered a superstar.

Elite 3rd line center, Derek Stepan.

Stepan is a really solid player but I wouldn't call him a superstar, that's more of a Rick Nash type if we're using the Rangers as an example.

Backstrom is definitely the best answer. Also, Patrik Elias. Ryan Kesler.

Marian Hossa. While everyone is circlejerking about Toews, Hossa is quietly making things happen at both ends of the ice. He plays a near perfect game but because he's winger he's underappreciated on HF

I think he'd put up right around 70 points without Ovie and no way in hell does he get a 100 point season.

He's still too good never to have been an all star selection though.

I think we have to define the word "Superstar" before we can arrive at an answer to the OP's question. In my world, Backstrom is not an underrated Superstar because he isn't a Superstar.

Gilbert Perrault MIGHT be an example of an underrated Superstar. When I say might, I mean he have been underrated.

I'm thinking a Defenseman might be more likely to be underrated. Doughty, maybe? I would also suggest Hedman, but I don't think he has been consistently good enough to deserve being called a Superstar.

Nicklas backstrom

and you may argue with this one:
Phil kessel.

You picked the two that came to my head. The way Kessel has been ******* on constantly as of late isn't fair with that team he plays on.

And Backstrom has never gotten the respect he deserved

From the players I've witnessed, even a slight bit...
MARK HOWE.

Yes, I realize in the HHOF, but he got in about 11 years too late. Not being even mentionned (while his teammate Propp -- himself pretty underrated, I might add -- was) is a solid exhibit as well.

That's what happens when :

- Your prime coincides with two dynasties you were not a part of;
- Your prime also coincides with one of of the craziest peaks amongst D-Men (Denis Potvin), who also happened to be in the same division;
- Your dad was way better than you were.

Amongst present players? Backstrom fits the bill.
