Easily the most valuable player on the Rangers.

With Stepan: 21-6-2, +40

Stepan injured: 6-7-2, -12

He missed 13 games with a broken leg during which the Rangers went 6-7. When he came back the Rangers won 18 of 24. He got hurt again, missed two games, Rangers lose both getting outscored 6-0, he comes back and they win 3 in a row again.

A team seems to transform from a non-playoff team to top 5 in the league based on whether he's in the lineup. I have to ask: if that's not a superstar, then what is?

The Islanders are 26-9-1 when Travis Hamonic is in the lineup, and 5-5 when he's out of the lineup.

Travis Hamonic is one of the most important players for the Islanders because he's the best defensive dman on the team. When he's not in the lineup it's a big hit. Similar to Stepan considering he's the Rangers #1 center, and the Rangers kind of lack the center position. You move Brassard up, but whose playing 2nd line center, and 3rd line center?

Hamonic is no superstar neither is Stepan imo, but both very good players and mean a lot to their teams.

Chris Osgood. 10th all time in wins (401) and 3 Cups with Detroit, but I never hear his name with comparable players.

People often mention him as some kind of proof that you don't need a great goalie to win a Cup, but man, he was always great in the playoffs. Uncanny ability to get hot at the right time. I definitely agree. Even though he had some less-than-stellar regular seasons that hurt his reputation, he is one of the most unfairly maligned or at least under-praised players I got to watch.

I don't know man I don't have the trend numbers in front of me, but you're really reaching here. Who's to say Stepan being in and out was the only factor?

It's not necessarily the only factor, but if the Ducks missed Getzlaf for a stretch of games and lost a whole bunch of those games, that's what people would point to.

Stepan is in the same situation. He's the #1 center and top offensive player (outproduced Nash over Nash's entire tenure as a Ranger) on a team that has won the most games in the league since the start of 2014. He deserves to be compared with Toews, Bergeron, Kopitar, Getzlaf in terms of being the centerpiece of winning teams. But he's denied that right because why, we have a great goaltender? So do most of those other guys.

sometimes valuable to a team does not equal star...
also no way stephan is more valuable than lunqvist or mcdonagh to the rangers... small sample size included.

Wow. You managed to misspell 2 names in that short reply. 3 if you count the lack of capital letters in McDonagh's name.

Well, I am going to throw out a name that is not often mentioned: Dale Hawerchuk. 1188 NHL games played with 1409 points. I believe he also took the defensive zone draw that broke Gretzky and Lemieux up-ice for the winning goal of the 1987 Canada Cup.

Sample sizes.....sample sizes....sample sizes.

some of the worst logic I have seen on these boards to make a point...its a bit laughable.

Stepan is undeniably not a superstar to anyone who pays attention to this league. (and is older than 12)

Most underrated superstar has to be Giroux. Despite the Flyers being **** for years, he has been performing better and better year after year.

How's 3 years? Is that big enough for you? Over the last 3 years, better PPG than Bergeron, Krejci, Sedin, Johansen, RNH, Couture (he ties Couture), and Backes who are all widely considered better than Stepan. Now there's a lockout in there, but we're talking about 175 NHL games. Is that big enough for you?

All this while playing Selke-caliber defense. And before you poo poo on that, he has comparable GA/60 and GF% numbers to Bergeron, who has been in an almost identical situation, and kind of won the Selke a little bit a couple of times during that stretch.

Yes he's a step below Kopitar, Pavelski, Toews, Getzlaf, and Seguin in production, among others, if that's what you wanna consider your superstars. Exclude him from the thread if you want because of that arbitrary line, but the thread is about underrated players and the guy's comically underrated.

Carey Price in the sense that people don't realize how important he is to the organization. He is the difference between a top 3 finish in the East and missing the playoffs entirely...not even exaggerating.
