I also thought the committee did a good job with the all-stars. Been a MacDougall fan back when he was with Acadia. He had a solid tournament. Petizian played his standard game, buzzing everywhere and being a pest.In talking with the guys at the celebration this past Saturday, feeling is that Hall, Carroll and MacDougall are gone. Ross is getting married and has pro hockey on the horizon. I bet the same for the other guys as well. Gilmour will be graduating undergrad but heard is leaning to coming back.
I was super excited that we got Kammerer here - he is going to be a shut down D for us next season and beyond.
We're in a great spot for next season! Still a chance to go out and add a couple of good players yes! We were there in Charlottetown...a couple of dominant games against a couple of the top programs in Canada. And with a majority of 1st year players, amazing!
I thought the All-Star picks were spot on personally - UNB was getting scoring from everywhere...Petizian and MacDougall might not have lit up the scoresheet but played dominant games in both ends...they were two players that I noticed every time on the ice. I had them both as top players in Game 1 for sure. It is refreshing to see players picked for overall impact for tournament all-stars. Well deserved boys!!
How LUCKY are we seriously?!! We get to follow one the best teams in the best non-professional hockey league in Canada each week in the hockey season!! Love this team!!
I wonder what kind of injury he had to keep him out this long?I think Kamerrer will be that McIvor type player.
AUS fan may know more...but I heard knee surgery last summer. Even if he was good to go at any part in 22-23, tough to justify burning a year of eligibilityI wonder what kind of injury he had to keep him out this long?
Anyway UNB will be adding at least two more D recruits in the offseason.
After Christmas was the goal for him coming in after knee surgery over the summer. If the knee wasn't 100%, why risk it? And who would you have taken out of the lineup? As it was, UNB managed fine without him so obviously no pressure on him to play.It was a knee injury he had. I heard he just wasn’t quite ready after Christmas.
Good for him. He'll also join the team for the rest of the season on a PTO.Carroll has signed a one year contract with the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights for next season.
I’m curious what that means going forward? I’m guessing even if he doesn’t hit the ice it is counted as a GP…so he’s not eligible again for a year.Richard dressing as backup for the Leafs tonight…
He's safe under the ATO as it is only for one game; that's why the Leafs keep having different amateurs dress as backups(Sammy will be the 4th?). Alberta's Berlin was an ATO goalie for Edmonton this season, and the Oilers even put him in for a few minutes at the end of the game.I’m curious what that means going forward? I’m guessing even if he doesn’t hit the ice it is counted as a GP…so he’s not eligible again for a year.

I'm pretty certain ATO doesn't count.
If I’m not mistaken an EBUG gets signed to a one game ATO, not really any difference , it’s just a term people have started using.Ahh ok, that makes sense. I figured there was some kind of exception…didn’t think he would waste a year to backup in one game. For some reason I thought Berlin was the EBUG. Thanks.
Yup, but if you're a goalie, you're an Emergency Back Up Goalie. The Leaves have gotten some flack over the number of EBUGs this season. If I’m not mistaken an EBUG gets signed to a one game ATO, not really any difference , it’s just a term people have started using.
Yup, and they probably keep their sweater, get a team jacket, autographs and other swag. Some ex-goalies have commented that it shouldn't be a "fantasy league" thing, which it has become this season. The key is that they are not allowed to pay ATO's (including EBUG's) as they are amateurs, plus the one game maximum. Obviously they cover expenses (like staying in a first-class hotel with the team in New York for Sammy). Apparently there is a NHL tradition for EBUG's that get into the game that some players will stick some cash on the dressing room bulletin board and everyone is expected to chip in, all "off the books" of course.
Good description of the EBUG role.Already covered, but I thought I would word it my way - An EBUG (the new and 'catchy' phrase) is for an Emergency Back Up Goaltender. To facilitate being on the bench during a game, even as an emergency backup, the goaltender has to have a 'contract' with the NHL club approved by the NHL League office. This is done via the ATO (Amateur Try-Out) contract. It is only for one(1) game because it's an 'emergency' and the club should have enough time to find a real backup within the next 24hrs. Also, because it's an 'amateur' tryout, there is no formal payment for their duties. The 'emergancy' is generally injury related and the club does not have time to activate a contracted goaltender (from the AHL or ECHL) in-time for the game.
Most amateur leagues, including USPORTS, support this for goalies so they do not lose any eligibility. Nick Chenard (OHL Owen Sound) was able to be an EBUG because the Attack were out of the playoffs and he is not under contract to any other team.
This is similar to the emergency 3rd goalie that NHL home teams must have available on game night. In the event they have to be activated (a goaltender is injured an unable to play) the '3rd goaltender' must either sign an ATO or PTO (Professional Try-Out) contract. A PTO provides for a payment of $500 per game, but can cause roster issues if there are too many active contracts already in-play. In most cases - they sign an ATO (but only if they have to be on the bench).
Certainly a great experience for the kids.
When the AHL was in Freddy (Express in the 80's and the Canadians in the 90s) a few UNB goaltenders were asked to be EBUGs.
As you know, there is never much news on UNB during the summer. I'm sure Gards has his guys already. Just waiting on Bedard and see if he signs with the Blackhawks or goes to UNB before making the splashy announcement.Any hot takes out there on summer recruiting for the National Champion Reds? That new banner on the side of the AUC looks pretty sweet!
I hear that Griffen Outhouse may not be back this year...Tanner could elevate to back up. Griffen is a solid tendy and great kid. Unfortunate how the injuries last season and surgery in pre-season put him behind and with Sam stepping up like he did. I also hear he was a total character guy as well and great team mate! If it true wish him well!
Not much to do I hear in the forwards group...no real losses. Hard to pitch a top recruit the idea to come here with a full roster up front.
D is the focus and hear guys are being looked at in the Western league and Q...I am sure we will start to see some news before too long. How good was Nolet when he got the chance gain to run in the playoffs?! I knew this kid was a talent...
Guys, I think we are setting up solid for this season!!
HaHa Bedard! We are down Hall, Carroll and MacDougall on D. All graduated and all went pro in March. Still have McCormick, MacCallum, Nolet, Landry and we get Kammerer this season...I think all project to be starters...so really maybe 1-2 defenders in need of. We have all forward back from last year...so yeah pretty hard to convince top talent to come here for opportunity. If Outhouse goes maybe they go for a tendy but Tanner is still here and would be a solid #2 behind Sammy. Coach Mac is working the phones and doing his magic right now yup! I don't even know who's gone from last year.
A good source actually for insider information on CIS athletes committing is on the national site...they publish a weekly update to letters of intent signed....we'll see signed letters before recruits are announced for the upcoming year...nothing yet!! I actually did know who was gone from the backend but had forgotten. Thanks for the reminder. If they only have 2 goalies, they will get a 3rd, for sure. Regarding LOIs - Several schools have reported recruits who did not do an LOI. I can't recall too many UNB guys signing an LOI. I would suspect part of the reason would be that they're waiting for a better offer from SFX or SMU. Once you sign the LOI, other schools can't talk to you.HaHa Bedard! I thought you were the new UNB insider? You had all the early scoops for us last summer! As you know, there is never much news on UNB during the summer. I'm sure Gards has his guys already.
