To those fine folks who were concerned about UNB injuries, I give you this from 8 days ago:

"They beat SMU 4-1 without those 3 guys. Injuries happen. Good teams adjust; other guys step up.
You can look back on this Sunday night when Wilms is taking a victory lap with the Cup."
Thankfully you were right and the lengthy title drought has finally come to an end.

"Lengthy drought" has been 1 year.
2019 was eons ago…

Out of all the national titles this one was the least expected. IMHO
For sure…thought this would be a 2015-type season….very good but still maybe a year away.

EDIT - Maybe 2007 too….just because I didn’t think anyone was beating Moncton that year.

UNB has now won their nine titles in six different provinces - Alberta/Saskatchewan/Ontario/New Brunswick/Nova Scotia/PEI

Also another odd year title - 07, 09, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23….lost in final in 15 and then of course no tournament in 21.

Gilmour? MacDougall? They have been in school for four and five years respectively now…although they would’ve gained an extra year of eligibility for the COVID year of 2020-21.

Any plans for a celebration event at the AUC this week? I like what they did in 2019 with the Skate with the Reds on a Saturday…it got a good turnout IIRC and was much better than when they used to have something through the week and you had to find a parking spot while school was in.

I would have to think Carroll (for sure), MacDougall, Gilmour and Hall are on the bubble - everyone else can stay, which is crazy.

In 2014 we lost 14 guys, some of which were really impactful; Culligan, Houde-Caron, MacNeil, Shutron, Nesbitt, Desnoyers and Thomas. A 'young' 2015 team went to the finals then won two in a row with a solid core. I think we're looking at that scenario again.

But, Gardiner still added to the 2015 team and those additions were gems; Anderson, Clapperton, McIvor & Marcoux in 2015, Simpson and Murphy in 2016 and Boland, Bennett and Goulet in 2017.

If you take this team and add anyone of these guys to it - that's crazy good.

E.

Interesting to see that the tournament MVP was UNB's goalie, now for the second straight time in two finals for UNB. Prior to that it was an offensive player; Maillet, Halley, Carroll, Gallant, MacIntosh,...

I was thinking that the Alberta Goaltender, Kruger, was a lock for the All-star Goalie, even if they lost. But with no single UNB player having a 'big' tournament I guess you're left with the goaltender (the shutout helps) and Kruger gets dropped from the all-star team (losing the big game doesn't help).

Richard - 180min - GAA 1.33 - .920 SV%
Kruger - 162min - GAA 1.11 - .961 SV%

Richard shouldn't be MVP if he's not on the all-star team.

I thought some of the all-star selections were questionable.
These things are always open to interpretation. Like the FISU team.
People will say "why did they take <Insert Name>, why didn't they take <Insert Name>".

Would they have won 2 Gold Medals?

Unless they picked someone from SMU or WSR does it really matter?

With Roth and Casey counting against the roster cap this past year there is two “free” spots right there they will have to work with…hopefully they can get Kamerrer back so that will use up one of those spots, but they should be able to add at least a couple guys this summer.

Hall might be done.
I was never a big fan of Hall , I always said he reminded me of Craig Mahon without the hockey sense but in the second half of the season he really impressed me, cleaned up a lot of the careless plays in his own end and was also far more disciplined. Would suck to see him go.

I thought Hall's discipline and play greatly improved once they put an "A" on him after the break. Maybe a coincidence, maybe not.

IMO, Hall is a valuable asset!
I agree with this, I think he is one of most valuable players when he plays on right side of line. Solid defensively, great pk and he can get into head of opponents. It is when he plays over the line he can become a liability.

I think a guy like Hall is important to balance the line-up. You can’t have all offensively-minded guys back there. McIvor was like that and I hope Kamerrer is that guy moving forward.

I also like having an agitator like him in the lineup too…he kinda took over that role from Boudens.

Played a Very important role on the team which he did very well in the second half. Giving him PK responsibility was very effective. As someone mentioned he played a disciplined game in the second half.

In talking with the guys at the celebration this past Saturday, feeling is that Hall, Carroll and MacDougall are gone. Ross is getting married and has pro hockey on the horizon. I bet the same for the other guys as well. Gilmour will be graduating undergrad but heard is leaning to coming back.

I was super excited that we got Kammerer here - he is going to be a shut down D for us next season and beyond.

We're in a great spot for next season! Still a chance to go out and add a couple of good players yes! We were there in Charlottetown...a couple of dominant games against a couple of the top programs in Canada. And with a majority of 1st year players, amazing!

I thought the All-Star picks were spot on personally - UNB was getting scoring from everywhere...Petizian and MacDougall might not have lit up the scoresheet but played dominant games in both ends...they were two players that I noticed every time on the ice. I had them both as top players in Game 1 for sure. It is refreshing to see players picked for overall impact for tournament all-stars. Well deserved boys!!

How LUCKY are we seriously?!! We get to follow one the best teams in the best non-professional hockey league in Canada each week in the hockey season!! Love this team!!
