The AUS finals proved costly for UNB, especially for the backend.
Landry and McCallum are all but done, so that's two very mobile defensemen gone for Nationals. Nolet can replace McCallum, but the loss of Landry is a blow!
Top scoring Keating is a question mark, but I will be surprised if he doesn't dress.

They beat SMU 4-1 without those 3 guys. Injuries happen. Good teams adjust; other guys step up.
You can look back on this Sunday night when Wilms is taking a victory lap with the Cup.

The good thing is they should be playing Thursday…so there is the chance for some rest (provided they win their first game…of course if they lose, they’ll have lots of rest).

Yeah. Landry us a huge blow.
UNB has be fortunate over the years not to have any big injuries before the Nationals. I believe the last time was in 2012. Shane Wiebe sprained his ankle in a bar fight

Injuries suck, but that is one of the consequences of the uber-competitve AUS. Teams that survive are battle tested for Nationals (usually). We fans benefit from the intense playoff games. Playoff incidents help fuel regular season rivalries.

Again, injuries suck, but I believe the intensity and passion of the games are for the greater good (of the AUS).

I agree, but I believe that Calgary and Alberta have as much chance at a National title as any AUS team, especially this year.

Nolet easily slides in to top 6. He is top 6 on any team top 4 on most. Mccallum will be a high end scorer from point at u sport level but defensive game still evolving. Gardy does great working with such players.

Mcquaid can give u solid minutes killing penalties and defensively…but certainly would be good to see one of two injured d back.

I also give kudos to Blagden really brought in for insurance but for his limited shifts since the season resumed he brings a lot of energy and hustle and has played smart as he has been prone to playing over the edge. Certainly he is just an insurance policy and not a replacement for the deep 12 - but give him kudos.

Blagdon is a good situational role player. As you say, he makes the most of his shifts. I suspect if the final game against SMU had got chippier, we would have seen more of Blagdon and McQuaid in a policing role.

When’s the last time UNB was seeded 3rd…I don’t know if I ever remember it happening.

Looking at Concordia’s stats….second best GAA in the country (behind only UNB), best save percentage, average 39 shots/game…I don’t think this is going to be an 8-1 game like last time they played at the UCup.

Concordia is really good team. I do think UNB will win but if Concordia comes thru, it will not surprise me
I thought UNB would win by several goals last year over RYE.
As someone mentioned, it's a very good field.
I'm looking forward to some entertaining games and if "my" team loses, fine.
My life doesn't change based on the success rate of teams I follow.

Like my friend here, I didn't anticipate UNB losing to Ryerson. But right off the hop a lucky/unlucky bounce off the rear boards lands on a Rams' stick and he has an open net for a goal. UNB is then chasing the game. And they had issues scoring goals last season. And the wider ice in Wolfville didn't suit UNB's shutdown forecheck. So furious push but upset loss.

Stuff happens at Nationals. Whoever makes it out of Canada West or OUA has to be taken seriously. No one fluked their way this year riding a hot goalie.

Due to the pandemic pause last year, UNB lost Boland and Guay to AHL contracts, this crippled their offence. They weren't the same team.

I’ve been critical of the defense a lot this year…but credit where it’s due, they stepped up huge this weekend…even more impressive considering they played primarily with only five d-men. They saved their best for the biggest games of the season.

One thing about UNB…they know how to clamp it down on defence at the University Cup…shutouts now in the 2011/2013/2023 finals.

To those fine folks who were concerned about UNB injuries, I give you this from 8 days ago:

"They beat SMU 4-1 without those 3 guys. Injuries happen. Good teams adjust; other guys step up.
