Definitely a much better performance this weekend vs. last weekend. Having Carroll back seemed to really help tighten things up defensively. Nice to see them put 11 goals on the board too.

At the end of the day they get 7 out of 8 points without the FISU trio, so really hard to ask for much more than that.

There are 6 games left for a maximum of 12 points.

UNB's magic'ish number...
... to clinch a bye is 1'ish vs SMU (creates a tie with SMU, record is 2-2 with one match left)
... to clinch 1st is 2 vs PEI (creates a tie with UPEI, but UNB has the tie-breaker).

SFX, UdeM, Acadia and Dal can not catch UNB

As for DAL, they pretty much have to run the board to catch UdeM and need ACD to lose 3 of 6 to make it interesting. Not impossible, but they are running out of time and games.

Interesting note - for these last six games, there are no double-headers. Everyone plays everyone in the league just once - a single rotation through all six teams.

Once again you are reading my mind.

I was actually doing a "net number of points" needed. So a net of 4 points (UNB win and/or UPEI loss) with UPEI and 2 or 3 with SMU.

UPEI needs a net of 10 with SMU.
SMU needs a net of 5 with SFX, 3 with UdeM and 1 with ACA.

And so on.....

IMO, the addition of Emmitt Sproule has improved UNB's offence, both 5 on 5 and on the PP.
McCallum compliments an already very mobile backend.
Agreed! Sproule has settled in nicely and has really sharp instincts driving the net

Also would never know that McCallum is in his first year. Has a reliable game about him so far

Lethal lineup top to bottom. It’ll definitely help having the FISU guys and veterans like Carroll back in down the stretch

Looks like we’re getting the bad power play again this weekend.

This is the worst stretch I’ve saw from them at home in a long, long time. Fifth straight home game giving up 3+ goals and looking very frustrated out there. Lots of turnovers and lackluster defensive zone play.

I have a different take on the game tonight. I actually watched it on the web, which I never do.
I thought SMU played a solid road game and didn't give UNB much time and space for the most part.
The times when UNB pressed, SMU didn't panic much and did a great job picking up rebounds.
SMU got 2 goals on "lucky" breaks, but they made those breaks by hard work and hustle.
I wouldn't fault UNB as much as I would credit SMU. BUT.... I thought UNB were soft for most of the game in both ends. They didn't drive the net for rebounds and they were passive in front of their own net,
Both teams were good on the PK. Nice UNB goal on the 5-3.

This is not as bad as the 2 game skid in Oct where the sky was falling everywhere I looked, or the OT win over DAL during FISU.

It's a loss against a hard working team, who deserved the win.

SMU played very good…you could tell they were definitely frustrating UNB and got them off their game. Kinda reminded of some of those games against X years ago.

Full credit for SMU on the win, but not a good performance from UNB!

Certainly a far cry from the 6-1 win (shots of 62 to 17) from a few weeks ago.

They happen to have a better GAA on the road (1.5) than at home (2.9) and with only two games left - it will likely remain that way for the seasons. The last time that happened it was 2013/14 (2.6 vs 2.4 on the road) and they lost to SMU in round 2 of the playoffs (3 games to 1) and before that it was 2005/06 (3.9 vs 3.5 on the road) and they lost to Acadia (three straight) in the finals with only a single ticket to nationals on the line. I would say the results are 'close' for the last two occasions, but this season the GAA is almost twice as better on the road. Wacky stuff.

Also their ratio of GF/GA is better on the road (2.52) versus at home (2.09).

Interesting game 1's for the AUS playoffs. I would think that PEI and X would be the favorites for next round. Acadia has been much improved though lately. Upsets brewing?

Who is planning on being in PEI in March for Nationals?

I will be going, hotel booked, tickets purchased.
Only thing left to cross off the list is UNB participation.

Outhouse next game? Obviously you need to score to win, but 4 goals on 15 shots is pretty ass
Edit: currently angry, can’t imagine they change , Richard has been overall very good this year but he’s had some rough outings since Xmas

Richard hasn't had two average/bad games in a row yet. I also haven't seen Monpetit steal two games in a row yet either.

Gardiner will stick with Richard. The UNB rookies just learned that two blowouts doesn't predict an easy third win. Closing out a series is not always easy.

Moncton played desperate hockey, got the goaltending they needed, and scored opportunistic goals early in the game. UNB got lots of shots, but not enough second shots on rebounds. They also need to get more bodies in front of Montpetit. They could probably afford to take the body a bit more on the forecheck.

I expect a different Reds performance tonight.
