Given the slim chance of AUS play resuming this year + I would guess almost 0% chance of a UCup I’m not terribly upset about losing Boland…he was done after this year anyways.

Guay hurts a little more since you might’ve had him for two more seasons after this one.

I was doing a little bit of “Please let me go back to work, I’m doing spread sheets for fun at 8:30am” math this morning to see where Boland might sit in the record books at UNB.
Taking his 48pts in 30 games from 19-20 and his 16pts in 15 games this year (and we all know he started slow after the year off) he produced at 1.42 point/game. Assuming he was healthy in the unplayed season and played in UNB’s remaining 12 games this works out to what would be 42 games he missed due to Covid.. had he scored at this pace (1.42) he would finish with 60 more career points , currently he sits 14th in career regular season points between Stephen Anderson and John-Scott Dickson, if you add 60 points to this he would be in between Hunter Tremblay and Rob Hennigar for second with 189 points… Obviously they both only played 4 years so even assuming he only played 4 and chose to go pro before his 5th season, at 1.42 pts/g for 20-21 this would put him between Toby Burkitt and Kyle Bailey for 7th all time. My point is writing this is that I often felt UNB fans tend to hold some guys from earlier in the GMac era in a god like way and somehow Tyler never seemed to get the love he deserved from the fans , but when all is said and done he deserves to be remembered as one of the greatest players and ambassadors to come through the program at UNB. It was a pleasure to watch him for the 3.5 years we did have him here !

Yeah, losing Guay is more of a long term impact.

Has he played in 2022 though? If so he will have to sit out a year.

Curious what happens though…they only have 17 skaters at the moment.
Lets not forget Gilmour has a broken fibula and from what i was hearing he likely wont be ready to go until some time in March.
I wonder with guys leaving teams if they will make exemptions on the roster cap.. I know of a few ex Red Wings going to UNB but I wonder if GMac would just as well play with 17 or fewer skaters as opposed to dressing a few grocery sticks just to be able to say he has a full lineup.

Personally, I would just rather give more ice time to the current guys.

Keep in mind that there is a deadline for having guys enrolled in classes so it’s not like they could just bring someone on board in a couple weeks.

I do wonder if they would consider allowing guys to come in without having to sit out…or let the guys who have left come back without penalty.

No. That's why there are rules. How would SFX feel if they had to play UNB after sitting out for weeks, while UNB has 2-3 guys who played minor pro.

The only rules they might change are the roster limits. Even after the re-start there could be covid cases.

I agree that it is very unlikely to happen…I was just thinking out loud…but these are unusual times and circumstances.

Its as unlikely , if not more unlikely but in the name of these being student athletes, I would almost rather be able to dress law school guys etc, it won't happen, and i understand why but i would rather see someone who's on campus furthering their education post hockey be able to play..

I’ve been thinking about what they can do, if anything, about the roster situation for the rest of the year. Would it be possible to try and lure an overager now to join the team for the rest of the season? They would probably already be enrolled in online classes at a university somewhere…but not sure how that would translate to a new university at this point in the calendar?? But if you are a CHL overager who is playing on a team that doesn’t have a legitimate chance to win and is planning on going to school next year anyways, wouldn’t being able to join a UNB or Acadia, who could give you lots of ice time, be pretty enticing? The downside is the team is burning a year of eligibility for maybe 10-15 games…but most guys only stay for four years anyways. Again, don’t know if this would even be an option…

Going forward with a roster of 17 skaters isn't ideal, but it's where we're at.

Potentially six(6) meaningful warm-up games and a R1 bye.

- UNB has clinched a bye as a result of being 13pts a head of 3rd place DAL and PEI
- only SFX can catch UNB for 1st
- the magic number for UNB to finish 1st is 4; any combination of 4 wins by UNB or Losses by SFX (also UNB has a 2-1 record vs SFX so far with 1 game to go)
- all other placements 2-7 are up-for-grabs.
- SFX has not clinched a bye. Their 6pt lead gives them an advantage, but either DAL, PEI or SMU could over take them

For those asking about bringing in players from somewhere, I'm fairly certain that there are rules about when you can enroll. Unless the player is currently going to THAT university, they cannot play.

Can someone from UNB help me out here with the school registration requirements.

The challenge is he would have to be enrolled in a UNB Degree program by Jan 14th (last day to pay fees) - online classes would not be enough. That said - I agree, there was certainly a great opportunity for an overager to leave and come to school.

So not very likely to happen at this point.

I knew there was a cut-off part way through January, from my experience, but wasn’t exactly sure the date this year.

Gilmour to resume skating soon, but no timeline on his return.
My guess is early March.

UNB has commitments from a couple of players, not sure if we see any of them in the second half?
One is a goalie…not much point there with Parenteau/Outhouse/Somers.

The other is a forward, but as mentioned, unless he was enrolled at UNB by mid-January he can’t play. Bill Hunt’s latest column mentions the loss of Guay/Boland, but nothing about any additions.

I know I’m grasping here…but how common would it be for guys in their overage year to start taking classes at the university they are planning on playing at? Do some guys already have their mind made up about playing USports and what school that early? For example, say Corbeil knew at the end of his overage -1 season he was going to UNB…would he start moving his schooling to UNB for his overage year? Or just wait? I seem to recall Jonathan Harty being listed as a UNB student on one of those WHL Scholarship lists while he was in his last season of junior…so he must’ve already been taking classes there.
