This is surprising because it seemed this was another year off, and pushing some of these guys back seems like the best idea what with the ridiculous login that’s coming.

it’s a problem, and not where the Rangers made any mistakes. Look at our roster. Igor, Fox, Kakko, Laf, Miller, Chytil, Kravtsov. All of these guys will need big raises over the next 3 seasons. That’s not even mentioning guys like Mika, Strome, and Buch whose contracts expire in the next two years. We have too many quality young players on ELCs. One million is a lot. A lot of us would be far less upset with Kreider if he were making $5.5 million. Or Trouba if he were making $7 million. In a cap world, $1 million is a huge amount.

I feel like this is putting the cart before the horse. The only one of these players that is up for a "big" raise is Fox. Maybe Igor gets a decently-sized contract.

Laf and kakko and Chytil need to actually put up numbers before anyone should worry about their pay. Laf is pacing <30 points in what is amounting to a disappointing rookie season. Kakko is pacing <30 points in what is amounting to a disappointing sophomore season. Kravstov is looking like a player, but we still don't know what we have in him yet.

If they start producing in a manner that commands a big payday, we can move the world to accommodate their next contracts. At that point we can consider that a good problem to have, but I don't see a reason to be concerned in the short term, especially not when it comes to signing players like Jones.

Updated future depth chart:

Lindgren-Fox
Miller - Lundkvist
Robertson/Jones - Schneider

Trouba moved for salary relief
Reunanen, Hajek, Skinner, Rykov all run out of real estate

I can’t decide if I like Robertson or Jones better. Maybe Lindgren moves eventually?

Thank you, was just going to type this out.

Much different to go back in the draft than to becoming a UFA and pick where you want to play.

True but college players can only do that after 4 years, and junior players can, as well. They get drafted twice, and refuse to sign twice, they get to go the FA route. It's just a slightly different trajectory.

Maybe they were concerned about him going UFA and saw an opportunity to get him signed so they view burning a year as the cost of doing business
This kind of makes a lot of sense. Granted I don't know the legalities, but.....obviously the kid is really good, and we didn't wanna lose him like Carolina lost FOXY. Or, am I wrong comparing the 2 scenarios?

He can still do that.

If hes as "not ready" as you claim, his next contract won't be anything crazy anyway.
Right. And if all of those that "think they can manage" better than Gorton has, well......yeah, God bless your self induced confidence. That said, I dont see anything wrong looking at the bigger picture.
We aren't supposed to be where we are, right? Ahead of schedule, right?
#2. Indeed we are trying to make the PO's. So, isnt it possible this kid is better and has more to provide than our current 5/6/7 defenseman? Hmmmm. If he wasnt ready like some EXPERTS here say, then WHY wouldn't they do this? Are they TRYING TO SABOTAGE PO hopes? Me thinks, NO effin' way.
So, once again.....get off your "better than Gorton high horse".

Oh yeah, one more thing. Exposure. NHL exposure. Any NHL team scouts, that have seen him and interested......wouldnt that be like advertising? We have an abundance on Defense? Or, am I wrong? Possibly setting up an addition in a trade for what we need? Hmmmm.
Also, how about internal competition? Pushing Hayek to be better? Hmmmm. WTF do I know? I just look at the charts and graphs! 52 years of fandom doesn't account for a damned thing. Not in todays world. I tell ya', I get no respect. Haha, maybe many here doesn't even know where that comes from.

Trouba not being able to be moved for 3 years is where they run into a pickle. Depending on Robertson I guess they could move lindgren but I don’t see it. Too much chemistry with Fox. Plus he’d be better served getting less minutes TbH. Less of a physical toll. I’m very curious to how this is going to shake out. But no way all these guys are here long term.
Say for arguments sake in year and a half -2 years you have a top 4 of
Robertson/ miller- Fox
Jones- Schneider
Lindgren - trouba ?? I don’t know how this is gonna shake out

I know what the kid can do. I know he’s not NHL ready. He’ll make some really nice plays offensively and be a total liability defensively. He’s not strong enough either. If he even gets to play a shift with the big club, it’ll be painfully obvious he’s not ready. I don’t mind his deciding to go pro now rather than spend another year in college. I do mind that we’re signing a contract now rather than give him a chance next year, get him in camp, get him tested with NHL players etc.

Better than Hajek on his very first shift.

They're not a terrible team. They're a mediocre team on the upswing.
But its the turning the mediocre team into a champion level team that’s difficult. a few bad moves, a bad contract or two, and you can make it near impossible for your team to become championship level. The next 2-3 years are going to have decisions we’ll be looking back on decades later as being really good or really bad.

Whatever decisions they make, this is the best pool of talent they've had in a very long while. I'm not sure I remember them ever having this nuch talent already here and on the way.

I believe they're a playoff team next season and a Cup contender the year after.

and that’s why there’s so much anxiety. you see the potential. you see a foundation of potential greatness and you’re terrified management is gonna f*** it up somehow. the best talent we’ve had arguably ever and you feel like they have to make it work somehow.

People like to go off on Quinn and that’s fine but really there have been players who have made significant progress in his time here. All that said to me the tale of the tape for him will come next year when the divisions should go back to their old alignments. Not making the playoffs will not be acceptable in 21-22. We have Panarin an elite forward and Fox who is bordering on elite at D. Sheshterkin is not Lundqvist but he is legit. The team has shown it can cut down on dangerous shots and goals against. We have legit veteran offensive talent and some of the best young forwards in the game. Next year should be about working out the inconsistencies and if we do that there should be no problem us making a big step forward.

I hope we get to play the rest of the league next year. Despise playing the same teams so many times. I hope Bettman doesn't see this as an opportunity to get Canadian teams into the playoffs and keep the same divisions.

I just want life to get back to normal.

Brooks says the contract won't have any performance bonuses.

Yeah, and that could have been part of the negotiations.

Gorton: We will burn a year off your ELC, but we won't include performance bonuses

It works out well for both camps. Jones hits RFA a year earlier (or 2 years assuming he'd sign a full 3-year ELC next summer), he gets paid his signing bonus twice in 3 months, while the Rangers get the benefit of not having to deal with arbitration when his ELC expires.

that’s been a saying long before ricky bobby. I felt the same way last playoffs and during the play-in. I wanted us to lose to carolina because there was a roughly zero percent chance that we’d win the Cup, and a realistic, though unlikely, 12.5% chance we’d get #1 overall. And guess what happened?

This team isn’t ready to compete for the Cup. The moves over the last two years and for the next year or so, through summer 2022, are what build our foundation to go for it all for the 5 or 6 years after that.

The "play-ins" were the first time in 30 years of being a fan that I secretly hoped to lose. It worked out.
I can't imagine living in that space, though.

April 9th, 2011.
If we beat the Devils AND Tampa beats Carolina, we're in the playoffs.
I score decent tickets for a decent price, get a Dubinsky 85th jersey for pretty cheap, and some cool cups.
WE WIN!
We then went to Avery's bar, Warren 77, to watch the Tampa / Carolina game and the place went BANANAS every time Tampa scored, singing the goooal song and everything.

The fact that we dropped the ball in the playoffs doesn't much matter. The team got better that season, had some insane moments along the way, and continued to get better in subsequent seasons. We truly had a few solid chances to win it all with Hank, and I'm upset that we never got him one (yet? wink), but imagine missing out on the enjoyment along the way during that window.

(I'm more of a Mets & Giants guy, so read into that what you will.)

If championships are literally the only thing you care about, then pick a new team every season, and see how good you are at it. See if you're better than the Yanks or Canadiens personally. You'll get a better "cup %" than just being a Rangers fan, and that's okay.
