Wdym, he’s been GM for years and has yet to draft a goalie that’s played consistently in the NHL. Lou also failed to draft one. He signings have prevented us from resigning goalies like Campbell and Andersen.
GM - Signed May 11, 2018

Only 1 goaltender drafted since the current GM was signed is listed in any NHL line-up today. He was drafted in 2019, Spencer Knight. Jeremy Swayman drafted in 2017 would be the other option with regards to NHL goaltenders.

You should be reading into the LTIR - you think they'd voluntarily shutdown their big money goaltender until late November at the earliest, just for some cap wiggle room? He's hurt.

They could easily have run the university ATO tonight & used an emergency recall on Kallgren for Monday if it wasn't a major injury. Fact that they didn't, suggests it's not a minor one.

LOL YES @ the bolded. Absolutely I think the plan has always been this from the get go. If Murray gets injured in any capacity he's going to LTIR to give him as much time as possible to recover and also maximize cap space. I have no doubts that Murray is injured. But do I think a groin tweak was gonna keep him out 10 games/24 days? no. The leafs are being cautious given his injury history. "Hey Matt, take as much time as you need to get better and make sure you're 100% healthy"

I think of the two goalies Samsonov is the guy they were hoping proves to be the starter. He's 25 years old, just getting into his stride.

Then hire the best scout to find us some.
f*** we have more money than God.

we will not know how good our goalie prospects are from dubas era for about another 3-4 years. at least. goalies aren't easy to draft and it's basically a BS science.

Though not quite. Leafs had the capspace to resign both Campbell and Andersen - they chose not to.

Which in of itself is obviously up for debate if those decisions were correct but it's not capspace why those guys aren't Leafs anymore

Weren't his prior injuries mostly concussions though?

Why is it that every goalie that comes here suddenly has a glass groin? It is definitely suspicious when it only becomes a problem here, and I thought they fixed this problem with their medical staff in the offseason... Clearly not.

I don't think it's just a Toronto problem. Look at the goalie injuries across the league over the last couple of years. Groin injuries have been the leading cause. The morning skate might be the issue. Why do goalies need a morning skate, pre-game warm up and then play the game? Over usage much.

The same people having a meltdown now about an injury to our injury prone goalie would have a meltdown as soon as one of those injury prone goalies got hurt.

It's really no longer the case of best scouts.
i wonder how many times will i need to repeat that only 3 goalies since the moment matthews was drafted has seen regular playing time in the NHL?

I'm going to guess a lot.

edit: oh shit my bad it was 4. i missed swayman.

Adding some insult to the injury

At some point though, you are going to have to risk it

Minny last year despite of having decent NHL calibre goalies, went out and traded for the pick so they can pick Jesper Wellested

There were reports that Flurey would have been open in coming to Toronto but ultimately it didn’t matter. He re-signed before he hit UFA.

Flurey has also had a terrible start to the season too. Not that anyone should evaluate a goalie after just 1-2 games regardless

I thought they couldn’t afford Campbell, IIRC they offered around 2.8 mill. Regardless I don’t think those goalies were the answer for the Leafs but marginally better than whatever we have now.

Leafs are spending about 6.5 mil combined on Murray and Samsonov. Could have given Campbell 5 and found money to shed elsewhere (if they had not brought in Murray).

Front office didn't have the confidence he was their guy. Seems like they didn't trust him in the playoffs and didn't want to give him the added term on top of that

Again, whether that's the right call obviously up for the debate still. Personally I wouldn't have given Campbell that Oilers deal

that's alot of hope .
I have never understood why we didn't go after Craig Anderson the last couple of yrs.
The last 2 yrs taking a chance on injured goaltenders.

To those who mocked when Talbot got injured and keep preaching Campbell is injury prone and can’t play a full season. Having Murray sure is better in terms of health concerns.
Really hate to see any injuries to players esp Leafs, but can Murray plays a few more games being getting hurt.
Most importantly, is this an old injury or a new injury.

Well I was wrong about it being not a big deal injury. Just saw he's out minimum until nov 8th. Jeez. That sucks.

looking at it the other way...just means Kallgren might get 1 or 2 games. Not the end of the world.

On the long road trip we can Carry a 23 man roster which will be good. We can bring up Robertson soon now then yeah?

Just have to hope Samsonov stays healthy and plays well. Give us a big 8 to 10 games here.

Unquestionably Dubas' biggest weakness as a GM. He doesn't know goalies to save his life.
Most coaches and managers don't. Even scouts. No one understands the goaltending position but goalies. That's why they usually get the goalie coach to scout the goalies

It is not either Campbell or Murray though. I find it hard to believe Dubas and company didn’t know what Campbell had in mind during the season or at the very least an estimate of what Campbell was looking.
Unless Dubas wanted Murray from the start, which is a very scary thought due to Murray recent plays(last few seasons), I failed to understand how Dubas got cornered into a 5/5yrs for Campbell or 4.65/2yrs for Murray situation. Not like he needs to worry about signing Dmen- since Reilly signed mid season or signing his top guys since they are all under contracts.
So what the heck had he been doing when he knows 5/5 is too much for Campbell.

You're absolutely right it wasn't a one or the other situation, especially this more recent off-season.

Though admittedly I wasn't a fan of most options available - lots of gambles, very few safe bets.

The 50 contract limit is an easily solvable problem. It’s not hard to trade out a prospect that the team has lost faith in for next to no return.
Someone like Joey Anderson. If the team doesn’t see a future in him another team will take a flyer on him for future considerations.
Or maybe a goalie.
Or maybe Simmonds for a goalie.
