England find new ways to lose, like I said.

Italy bottles 2 penalties (Jorginho one was awful lol) and England says "hold my beer" and bottles 3. LMAO, you couldn't write this stuff any better.

Jorginho shot was not bad. Pickford guessed right and may have moved before ball was hit. Even at that he palmed it into the post and got fortunate. It was a tough heroic save and I don't even like Pickford. Donna had two easy stops that he makes for fun. Was not even challenged.

Like I said, how do you even lose that game if you're England?

Up 2 minutes in AT HOME.

Pickford, who usually isn't good at penalties, somehow manages to save 2 of them.

Italy's supposed best penalty taker is stopped.

Crowd all energized at the heroic save to keep the COMING HOME dream alive, and the coach's lineup card has the 19 year old lining up to take the 5th penalty?

England make 2 subs specifically for penalties and they're both stopped. 3 bottle jobs in total.

This is 100x worse than Lampard and Gerrard somehow both missing penalties in a knockout game many years ago. Or when the saviour Beckham bent the ball into the air on a penalty.

Total mismanagement. Might be a good coach. But his orchestration of the penalty kicks and the subbing in for that was shambolic. Its why England lost on the day.

Gonna be some questions on why Grealish isn't being tapped to be in games quicker. for England he was like Chiesi .

Needs to be remembered Italy had lost Spinazolli and had lost Chiesi in this game and yet England could not capitalize. Those were big losses of players for Italy.

lol that diveboy wasn't getting the calls today. Sterling is pathetic. How many times a game does he throw himself on the pitch looking for a call?

The way England beat Denmark it would be a stain on the tournament if England had won. There was of course tons of recrimination on how England had advanced.

Southgate definitely deserves some blame for today, despite having a otherwise solid tournament. It's always something with England. They can be having a good game, a good tournament, good performances by players. Then something happens that brings the whole thing down. It happened again today. Southgate had a good tournament, then loses his mind today.

I'm actually gonna say that despite Sterling's diving, he did step up for England throughout the tournament. For someone who gets regularly bashed for inconsistency in his club career, he actually had a good tournament. (Also, Grealish is more infamous for diving than Sterling is ;))

Definitely some karma catching up for England today. That laser pointer thing and two balls on the field in the last game.

It wasn't the last time Canada was in the WC.

If Canada qualifies they probably get 3 games and don't make it out of group stage.
There's more interest in soccer these days here amongst the younger generation. Canadians may actually cheer for Canada this time around.

Probably. I'd be ecstatic just making the World Cup. Anything past that point is gravy, even if we score just 1 goal in the group stage.

Sigh....

Hadn't watched any of these games until today since I cut cable in January and greatly reduced the amount of attention I paid to sports, but I did listen to almost all these Euro games on the online BBC radio feed over the last month. Really felt like England, despite not being particularly great, finally had all the stars aligning for them. Going by the BBC broadcast team, Southgate really seems a nice chap who has been haunted for 25 years for his miss in Euro 96, and this truly was going to be the fairy tale redemption story. A cruel irony that those two dunces he subbed on specifically to take penalties let him down so badly. I can forgive Sako, a teenager who was probably nearly crippled by the pressure at that moment, but Marcus Rashford...oh boy. John Mensah's miss for Ghana against Uruguay in 2010 WC was the last time I can recall such an awful penalty attempt at such a critical moment. If Rashford scores, I truly believe England wins. And all he had to do was hit an open freaking net from 10 yards out...

Anyway, enjoyed reading everyone's comments throughout the tournament. Even though I'm not from England or even somebody whose enjoyment of a tournament hinges on the success of any one particular favorite team, that was a kick in the nuts, so I share in the misery of any poor English diehards out there. The first World Cup/Euro game I ever watched with a rooting interest was the loss to Argentina in 98 (on penalties, naturally), and to be honest it feels like that was just yesterday, even 23 years on. Add a 5th notch to my England loses a major tournament knockout game on penalties belt!

This time around?

There were 51K fans at Commonwealth Stadium for a friendly match against Brazil back in the 90's. A level of support never seen since for the National team.

You have a tendency to phrase these things as if they are happening for the first time.

Really not impressed with the abuse Sancho, Rashford, and Saka are getting on line
When you win you're English, If you lose, you're black it seems. gross

Please. Thats a worst possible take on the criticism. The players in question were not good enough to be on the pitch and Saka particularly was awful, a turnover machine botching every ball he touched. No way he should even be in the lineup.

Perhaps the criticism is why the 5 picked for penalty kicks, with everything riding on it, weren't on merit.

I mean I know we won't hear much about it from the team themselves but there were some obvious non picks for the penalty kicks as well as odd personnel decisions.

I mean on a larger scale this is England, a producer of some pretty extraordinary football talent sending 3 players out that couldn't finish on a penalty kick. Obviously selections were a problem.

have you seen the abuse he's received on line?

you might want to change your stance bro.....it has nothing about selection, he is getting ravaged for the sole point of the colour of his skin.

If you read through the post chain I interpreted your post as the one implying that we wouldn’t get much support. My initial reply to the other poster was talking about support, then you replied saying it wasn’t that way the last time around.

Not sure where I'm supposed to be reading. If its twitter, forget it. I won't waste my time there. Can't go further here into broader issues, which we know exist.

Because Canada is a Soccer minnow that will have trouble swimming on the world stage. I think it possible you feel this Canadian team is far better than it is. That said with the diluted nature of the present day world cup and so many teams in, Canada might get the break of an extraordinarily easy group.

I wasn't saying Canada didn't support the team last WC, just saying that the involvement, even if we should make it, is probably 3 games and out.

Mostly instagram, and Twitter, and boy, oh boy is it a cesspool of the most rascist shit I have ever seen.
Poor kids were distraught, and the stuff being hurled their way is evil.

I wasn’t and am not talking about how they will perform. I’m solely referring to support, highlighted by the fact that I bolded that part of the other poster’s post in my initial response to him.

Edit: I guess I didn’t bold part of his post, I thought I did lol. In any case I was referring to support.

You misunderstood my post. I misunderstood yours. :)

I think you misunderstood the original OP making it a circle of confusion. ;)

heh

But there is something about Football, and WC or Eurocup in particular that makes me think most about the Euro side of me. A common dynamic for those from elsewhere, anywhere.

Gonna disagree here. He barely glanced post. Rashford missed the net, wide on a penalty kick. Thats a hall of shame lack of finish. A lot of guys will sail the ball over the bar, can happen if you hit the ball hard. Missing on a side foot, lol. Rashford was in his own head on that one and totally f***ed up.

If you sail the ball over the goal it has less to do with hitting it hard and more to do with either leaning too far back or striking the ball too low and maybe both, I know this because I have 2 kids in soccer and both can absolutely crush the ball for their ages. I know a good bit about shooting for power, height, etc. as I researched a lot on how to hone their skills. My oldest shoots so hard that his teammates won't even let him take penalties in practice. In the English player's case he likely planted his left (plant foot) facing the wrong way or simply overthought it and went for a perfect shot instead of aiming 2' inside the post. I'd say that is more unlucky than sailing it 10' over the frame.
