I think you misunderstood the original OP making it a circle of confusion. ;)

heh

But there is something about Football, and WC or Eurocup in particular that makes me think most about the Euro side of me. A common dynamic for those from elsewhere, anywhere.
He said fans stop being Canadian and pretend they’re a fan of a country they never lived in. To me that implies Canadians wouldn’t be supporting Canada in the WC, which I said would be different if we actually qualify.

Sigh....

Hadn't watched any of these games until today since I cut cable in January and greatly reduced the amount of attention I paid to sports, but I did listen to almost all these Euro games on the online BBC radio feed over the last month. Really felt like England, despite not being particularly great, finally had all the stars aligning for them. Going by the BBC broadcast team, Southgate really seems a nice chap who has been haunted for 25 years for his miss in Euro 96, and this truly was going to be the fairy tale redemption story. A cruel irony that those two dunces he subbed on specifically to take penalties let him down so badly. I can forgive Sako, a teenager who was probably nearly crippled by the pressure at that moment, but Marcus Rashford...oh boy. John Mensah's miss for Ghana against Uruguay in 2010 WC was the last time I can recall such an awful penalty attempt at such a critical moment. If Rashford scores, I truly believe England wins. And all he had to do was hit an open freaking net from 10 yards out...

Anyway, enjoyed reading everyone's comments throughout the tournament. Even though I'm not from England or even somebody whose enjoyment of a tournament hinges on the success of any one particular favorite team, that was a kick in the nuts, so I share in the misery of any poor English diehards out there. The first World Cup/Euro game I ever watched with a rooting interest was the loss to Argentina in 98 (on penalties, naturally), and to be honest it feels like that was just yesterday, even 23 years on. Add a 5th notch to my England loses a major tournament knockout game on penalties belt!

I watched most of the games, when I was awake, on FreeStreams. BBC, when it wasn't buggy and dropped (in which case I had to watch TSN) and ITV, where there was no problems watching and the feed is probably up 24/7/365.

Everyone should be proud of their heritage, I see no issue with this and tend to root for teams that myself or my kids have ancestry from. It's not like I can cheer for Canada or the US in the Euro Cup or Sweden in the Copa America.

My point was more that if Canada actually qualifies, then I think we will see a lot of Canadians who usually cheer for their ancestral country also cheer for Canada.

If you sail the ball over the goal it has less to do with hitting it hard and more to do with either leaning too far back or striking the ball too low and maybe both, I know this because I have 2 kids in soccer and both can absolutely crush the ball for their ages. I know a good bit about shooting for power, height, etc. as I researched a lot on how to hone their skills. My oldest shoots so hard that his teammates won't even let him take penalties in practice. In the English player's case he likely planted his left (plant foot) facing the wrong way or simply overthought it and went for a perfect shot instead of aiming 2' inside the post. I'd say that is more unlucky than sailing it 10' over the frame.

Also, if the planting foot slips while taking the shot, the ball will more than likely be in the stands.

I'd cheer for both. It would be awesome for North American soccer if Canada and the US have strong World Cup showings.

Right now I cheer for the countries of my ancestry, Italy, Portugal and Brazil but if Canada makes the World Cup then I cheer for them even though I know the odds of them winning aren’t food.

Exactly, and I think a lot of Canadians in similar situations like you would also do the same.

I can’t bring myself to cheer for the US in any sport lol.

I have 2 kids under the US soccer umbrella as well as many of their teammates, teammates siblings, friends, etc. The more opportunities that are opened to all of those kids and the kids in Canada is a great thing IMO.

Probably not that good either :sarcasm:

I’m just petty lol. I don’t like the US in any international sporting competition. No offense. ;)

Canada has better food than you give us credit for, btw. :sarcasm:

My ancestry is Ukrainian and German living in Poland). Although I grew up more around the Uke side, I have no ties with any of those countries and, if Canada were placed in a group with those 3, I'd cheer for Canada and get PO'd if they lose.

BTW, what sort of betting setup do you take part in that pays out in food?

If my kids ever get there you had damn well better cheer for them or expect an entire 40' container full of cane spiders delivered right to your door by my buddy @yukoner88!

I made one half-hearted attempt to find a stream early in the tournament, but after listening to a couple games on BBC I actually preferred the radio feed to watching on TV oddly enough (and I was usually at work when games were on anyway). There was just something quaint about listening to an Englishman call the game with a Irishman or Scottsman who you could barely understand throwing in their two cents as the colour man. Didn't matter what teams were playing, it was always a first rate production. That said, I did go out to watch the TSN feed for the final today.

One thing about hockey fandom that I’m grateful for is that while we can be intense and passionate about our teams, we very rarely go into full brawl mode with opposing fans.

I realize it doesn’t always happen in soccer either, but it’s definitely more common than in hockey.

The street riots appear to be a shared thing though…
