Not f***ing yet it didn't!

Howe-Leschyshyn-Jesus would be a terrible line.
Seriously. The only competitive role I could see for Leschyshyn in ice hockey is playing for the Washington Generals-esque token opposition in Russia's Vladimir Putin + former actual players games. That is, if the dictator can still even skate with his health problems. In either case, JL will have found fair competition.

He could play full blast and still lose to Putin. It would look great.

Terrible trade from a value perspective. At least the magnitude of the value is low.

And now he's gonna absorb the poor bastard we just traded for into his black hole.

In 2014-15, the Rangers were a much better team when Rick Nash was killing penalties than when Tanner Glass was out there 5v5. I think that's just about the range we're in.

But at least Glass threw random hits and was willing to fight, and I get that people care about that. Jakey is 160 pounds and finds The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles too violent. That's what I really don't get. He doesn't even do the stuff that usually gets bad players on the ice.
On Jake I'm not gunna lie, when I wore a younger man's clothes in a previous life I could probably give you close to what he does.

The epitome of someone just out there for a skate.

Really wish they’d take Fox off of the PK. let Schneids do it. Fox is getting worn down and he’s not a great PKer anyway (according to the nerds)
I know how important he is to this team winning but would also be nice to play him around 21/22 min a game like we did against Carolina. Easier said than done but playing him PK and closer to 28 min a game can't be good.

We know he's not the "savior" but Actually played 15 games in the playoffs against some tough competition. Averaged about 12-13 min a game against those opponents? I think that is a decent sample size vs Gauthier who didn't play a single game.
What other NHL player to help the 4th line would we be getting for this return?
I'd rather have had a center to push Leshychyn out.

4th line cant be improved if lesczezcszin is on it.
The one saving grace is that, for the most part, the fourth line doesn’t get much run in the playoffs. Goodrow and Motte will be spare parts. I would think the next move is, if possible, to upgrade Vesey in the Top Nine. (Since they appear to have totally given up on Kravtsov).
Not sure if that would be possible tho.

Re: Gauthier and his value and future... I think it's fair for people to lament losing him, but only to a degree.

1 - he was on waivers earlier this year and no one took him. and it wasn't like his salary was cost prohibitive. He just wasn't seen as a top 12 upgrade for most teams. So, his value wasn't particularly high.

2 - That said, the league was behind the curve on him. Gauthier is in the midst of reshaping his game. And for spurts you can really see his speed and size impacting the game. drawing penalties, stretching out the D.

3. - Where he suffers in his value is his effectiveness at doing the things a 4th liner needs to excel at, especially on a deep team. He's not terrible on the forecheck, BUT, he doesn't PK, he's not particularly agile in small spaces in the D zone. He's a bit stiff in the hips considering all of his speed. So, his ability to pressure the puck, block shots, get in passing lanes, pressure the point and track the puck, it has its limitations. For as fast as Gauth is at full steam, his stops and starts are a bit lumbering. He's still somewhat effective. And I think he's considerably better than he was just 2 seasons ago. And he deserves kudos for his hard work, but he's not as valuable to a playoff team as Motte. Even if Motte never scores.

4 - On the other hand, he does draw penalties...

5 - If you recall, he requested a trade at the beginning of the year. We couldn't find a new home for him then. He was not coming back next season. Would it have been nice to keep him for a playoff run as an extra forward? yes. Is he currently better than Cuylle in that spot? I mean, as much as I have significant hopes for Will Cuylle, I'd say Gauthier is currently better.

6 - Did we lose some depth? A decent 13th forward? Yes. But only for 3-4 months. And we needed to move out salary or pay for OTT to retain. And maybe Gauthier was a lesser of two evils.

7 - Gauthier leaving signals very loudly there's another move coming. We simply need more forward depth for the playoffs. Ideally the last guy plays a style of hockey that isn't just a 4th line style, but can give us yet another guy who brings an element to any line. Speed, size, physicality, IQ. Something.

Better yet, just get three decent guys and put them together. 4C's are fake.

You can count the 4th liners good at faceoffs and playing center on your fingers.

Or play Brodzinski who is one of the three 4th liners ever that's good at faceoffs.

I should work in hockey. I have all the answers.
