Honestly not sure how much of an upgrade this is. Gauthier has been pretty solid and Motte isn’t that special imo. Would have liked to see 4C settled first
problem is you snooze you lose sometimes. With the caliber of wings you can get to play the 4th line with speed for this price you would be stuck with another Dryden Hunt type player (not hating on Hunt he played hard just saying). Ideally both a winger and center for the 4th line would be nice.

xG last night

Flames: 2.97
Rangers: 2.01

With Leshitshow's shifts removed

Flames: 1.93
Rangers: 1.90

He played five minutes. HE PLAYED FIVE MINUTES!

This :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:er makes Brett Howden look like Patrice Bergeron.

He's an honest to God marketing analyst who didn't get past Junior B and plays on the weekends, that got a shot because people know his dad.

Please do something about that instead of making other acquisitions.
Thanks for quantifying the suck.

The other thing is how is very existence in the lineup has made both Gauthier and Goodrow look like AHL players. They don't touch the puck either.

It's too bad Gauthier didn't kill penalties...could put him on a pairing with Goodrow and compare their PK analytics vs. their 5 on 5 analytics with JL and see what's worse. Legitimately would've been curious to see.

By my count, JL touched the puck 3 times last night...meaningless touch to dump the puck from the boards. Getting easily knocked off the puck behind the net in the Ozone, and getting two wacks at a centering pass that really weren't a serious threat beause he skated to the far side of the goal and the pass didn't even really get to him. Amazingly he was credited with a shot for this, otherwise his analytics might've een even worse.

I like Gaut. Good kid and easy to root for. But he has a top 6 style with 4th line production. To be an everyday NHL 4th liner, a player has to do something else in addition to putting up ~10 points. Whether that's FO's, being a hitting machine, PKing, being a pest, etc, they have to have another wrinkle to their game. Gaut doesn't. Worse, he seems like he doesn't realize that he NEEDS to add something like that to his game. He still sees himself as a potential scoring line player, but his time for that has all but run out. If he wants to be a regular in this league, he needs to start reinventing his identity (hopefully Vesey gave him some tips).

And now he's gonna absorb the poor bastard we just traded for into his black hole.

In 2014-15, the Rangers were a much better team when Rick Nash was killing penalties than when Tanner Glass was out there 5v5. I think that's just about the range we're in.

But at least Glass threw random hits and was willing to fight, and I get that people care about that. Jakey is 160 pounds and finds The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles too violent. That's what I really don't get. He doesn't even do the stuff that usually gets bad players on the ice.

Not sure how I feel about this. Motte was good in a 4th line role last year, but Gauthier definitely created offense in ways that were not often seen from 4th line players on this team. Problem is Blais and Leschyshyn were black holes offensively and that always hindered Goat this year IMO.

Would have liked to see how Goat did without an anvil on his line, then I think I'd be able to assess this trade better.
More Tyler Motte talk; yay. If you weren't sick of it this past summer, we'll get more of it.

Would rather have kept Gauthier (unpopular opinion I know). Motte will be useless in the trainer's room.

Now, get rid of Leschyshyn.

Honestly, to me, this is rearranging chairs. Gauthier was gone after this year anyways so if they didn't trust him, getting a player with similar impact on the game that they do trust is fine I guess.

Funnest thing is in two years time, when the Rangers trade for Gauthier at the deadline for the 4th line after he's established himself more.

I'm would say I'm fine with this, though.

Having effective/passable 4th liners is important as my seething hatred for certain guys will attest to.

I just happen to think that finding "good" 4th liners is like finding pigeons in New York. You barely have to look. (Which makes me even more angry about the shit ones seeing time!) And the difference between good 4th liners is like the difference between 63° and 64°. I think that's very true of Motte and Gauthier.

But whatever. We didn't lose anything. I hope he does well and everyone is happy. Except Jake Leschyshyn. I wish him unhappiness until he retires from ice hockey.

They are virtually identical when looking at caliber of player and prices paid...

Tarasenko - Copp
Mikkola - Braun
Motte - Motte

All we need to do is trade for a Vatrano and it's 2022 V2.
Except Tarasenko and Mikkola are better than Copp and Braun and it took less assets to get them. Not sure how last year’s was better.

I don’t like giving up the straight first in a better draft and I think Gauthier is worth more than the late pick we gave up for Motte last year.

Should tell you how much I dislike this year then.

Yeah, I would not have first rounders on the table for rentals, ever basically.

Yes, I know lots of GMs do it, but they are wrong. They act on desperation not on what is sound and healthy for their franchises.
In YOUR opinion. It's always a calculated risk. It's helped teams win Stanley cups in the past and there is no guarantee what happens this year for any team. The Rangers are a contender. I think the addition of Tarasenko and Mikkola for a 1st this year and a 3rd next year is actually than better value than giving up a 1st and 2nd for Copp. I thought the Motte trade was fine also. He does things that they are looking from a 4th liner and can PK. They weren't signing Gauthier next year anyway. So essentially it cost a 6th or 7th rounder to make your team a little better. I gave Drury a B+ last year. He gets an A this year from a value perspective. Tarasenko has played 5 games with his new team after playing 11 seasons with St. Louis. Tarasenko is exactly what this team needed and 5 games is way too short of a sample size to make any kind of an evaluation. So far 2 goals and 1 assist in 5 games. I think he will be playing a lot more instinctually 20 games from now and that is when we need him playing at his best.
