Happy Valley.
Also This is England ‘86, ‘88 and ‘90. Hardcore realism.

I can relate to their 80’s nostalgia way more than Stranger Things, although ST1 was excellent.

Don’t have time for too much TV but the UK shows are the one that usually appeal to me. Better acting and far better writing
I enjoyed Lovesick on Netflix. Looks goofy but ended up being solid and definitely funny.

They often find that balance between bleak misery and comedy which I like. Naked (1993) was a great movie; dark, bitter humor, one of the better lead performances you're ever likely to see, albeit one of the one of the most miserable movies you're ever likely to see, too. I remember reading that they went through lengths to make the cinematography as unsaturated and monotone as possible. Fair warning: heavily depressing, and heavily philosophical.

I was a big fan of Netflix first season of German sci-fi series Dark. Reading the reviews on season 2 - it's gotten even better!

Season two was really good.

This is one of these shows that no one seems to talk about but it deserves some attention.
Just started it based on your recommendations. Really enjoying it so far — despite the fact that it’d be tons better with subtitles rather than dubbing.

No spoilers!!!

'The Toys that Made Us' on Netflix has been an interesting watch.

A behind the scenes, unapologetic look at the pop culture phenomenons of the last 60 years or so - GI Joe, Barbie, Transformers, He-Man, Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.

Season 3 is currently in the works.

On a related note, has anyone watched the first few episodes of The Movies docuseries on CNN? I haven't but will.

Just got out of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood... it's like Tarantino was making his signature dish but when he went to make it he found out he only had the seasoning and decided to just serve that on a plate anyway

It was entertaining because he usually has great dialog but this movie was nothing more than him mental masturbating.

It was good, but to me this is similar to Jackie Brown, nothing I will tripping over myself to see again

I had read something on another site that described Dark as the "German Stranger Things" and came to ask if anyone had watched it. Gonna check it out tonight!

That’s an interesting description. Definitely can see it on multiple levels.

It's not really Stranger Things. I'm not going to ruin anything for you but there is definitely a major step up in complexity. Also, a completely different tone. Both shows are good at what they are going for.

I mean it’s sci-fi in a small town with some kids and the government doing government stuff, but the tone is very different. I haven’t seen S02 but from what I remember it’s just as much mystery and drama as sci-fi. The subject matter is, for lack of a better word, dark. There are absolutely no warm-and-fuzzies.
