you think any coach in the world is going to develop young guys over putting veterans in? You think Sweeney will care if opening night Nosek and Foligno are healthy scratches?

team has three spots or so open upfront. Bruins went out and filled them in five seconds with not a thought in the world to this “internal competition” we always hear
About. Nine million for three “meh” guys next two seasons.

There wasn’t a thought in the world about internal competition because at the start off the offseason neither Frederic or studnicka were even a thought for third lines roles. Studnicka hadn’t shown anything last year and Frederic hasn’t shown anything outside a handful of games and couldn’t play over guys like Wagner. Obviously they went out and signed guys.

yeah they signed them all to 2 year deals. Smart

so they gave zero faith in their guys to improve over the off season and learn on the job. Makes me laugh when I see these prospects as “untouchables” in deals. I mean a package headed by studnicka and Frederic could surely improve the team no? Why are we sitting on them? The brass is obviously in win now mode, let’s go all in and stop shopping in the discount aisle

Three months ago would you have had faith in any of our prospects to take a bigger role in the lineup this year.

I don’t think anyone is untouchable among our prospects according to management. That’s just fans on this board.

I hear you, but also get that they're creating opportunities for kids without having to depend on kids taking a next step. Honestly, none of the kids blew the roof off in training camp/preseason enough to beat out the guys they signed who've looked solid (I thought Lysell looked the best of the bunch).

Its a long season and a lot can happen. Counting on a kid to fill a role can quickly turn into counting on 5 kids to fill 5 roles.

three months ago if you asked me would I rather go with studnicka and Frederic at center and one of our prospects at 4rw vs Foligno and Nosek at almost six million the answer would have been easy.

again, where are all those lineups before UFA with stalwarts Foligno and Nosek in there? Nobody bringing them up, then they sign and they are made out to be players they aren’t.

It’s normal for a fan base to get excited about new acquisitions even if they aren’t what they had initially wanted. Relying on Studnicka and Frederic to be our 3/4 C is a gamble I wouldn’t have taken.

What we need? I'm still trying to figure out what Trent Frederic brings to the table.

some love his size and the potential for him to be physically impactful and also appreciate the inconsistency, his lack of goal scoring skill, the way he engages opponents verbally including the goofy smile and laughing at players without actually engaging physically in a fake tough guy sort of way, the occasional bad penalty

I think he has the potential to do a lot of things, but I just haven't seen it yet. His physicality thus far is very overrated. I think he's miscast personally but Cassidy doesn't agree.

Thought his play with the puck in the preseason was noticeably better than last year and his skating has improved, but his play without the puck and just overall compete leaves a lot to be desired. Consistently late on the forecheck, losing coverage in the defensive zone, not winning puck battles as often as he should with his size and range. I don't really like him on the wing but it seems like they have Nosek cemented at center.

I hope he gets it figured out because they need some abrasiveness on that line but I just don't know at this point. I'm not convinced he processes the game fast enough at this level. He gives you flashes of skill, physicality and agitation (or he used to) but mostly he's been quite plain since the start of last year.

I am a staunch supporter of a) Trent’s potential and b) the need for what that potential translates to as a dire, dire need for this team but I will admit he seems to have forgotten about that part of his game. And my gut says he’s been told to forget about it. Which, if the case, I agree that he doesn’t have enough going for him in other areas to make him an asset.

in short, let him be what he is, or trade him

I expect a fight from him on Saturday...he needs to bring energy or they'll call up Wagner and replace him.
He's always willing, just needs to find a partner, guys want nothing to do with him and wont until he brings something else to the table that they need to counter.

Think he gets too much flak in here. Hes a young clean player getting 4th line wing ice time on a heavy "system" team. Expecting goals, borderline hits, and game changing individual performances is too much IMO. I'd be looking for him to be effective shift to shift rather than being a game changer at this point.

I dunno if I agree with that part. If he wants to play that role, I'd like him to see him initiate that part of his game a little more....get in people's faces and grab them by the jersey. Make the other team know that when he's on the ice you need to be careful.

The issue I have to Trent is I don't know if he can be successful playing 8-10mins a night, in that type of role. Maybe I was spoiled with Paille back in the day, but that's the type of guy I love on the 4th line..full of energy.

Well if you want a Paille there's always Kuhlman on the other side of that line. There's a whole lot of Paille in his game.

IMO its unfair to expect Frederic to be Paille or a dirtbag goon acting like a dick out there. Its just not who he is. I think he's better at center, but what do I know, and they brought Nosek in for it so Frederic shifts.

Guys know they need to be careful when he's on the ice, its no accident that they've been ignoring him after the whistle since he clowned some of the toughest nuts to crack during his first trip through the league.
