Rangers have plans for Miller and McIlrath with the Rangers big team. They will get long looks in training camp. The NCAA kids aren't eligible. Buchnevich. His season has started.

in fairness so will kristo fasth and lindberg

the ncaa kids ARE eligible just have to pay their own way

You make that sound so easy

considering these kids have everything paid for at school a couple hundred bucks from their rich folks prob wouldn't kill them. doubt they'd have to pay for it each individually. remember kreider paying his own way for something a few years ago.

Really disappointed that McIlrath and Miller aren't there. Both could have used this experience. Leave it to the Rangers to make things interesting.

A little less confident about our roster now. :shakehead

less disappointed in the ncaa kids not being there more disappointed than mcilrath (figured he'd captain the team) isn't there

although i could very well see management thinking this guy shouldn't be playing against kids anymore.

not surprised on miller. they want to give him every possible opportunity for that wrist to heal

Should be child's play for Lindberg and Fast coming off of SEL seasons.

Really interested to see what Josh Nicholls and Kristo bring to the pro game.

Why the **** do people care about "our roster"? These games don't count. This isn't the World Junior Championships. We know what we're getting out of McIlrath and Miller. Having them on the roster would make the team "better" but that's not what this is about. They have nothing to prove at a tournament like this. It's a chance for new guys to bond and adapt to the pro lifestyle or get introduced to North American hockey or some of the lesser prospects to stand out. It's a chance for the scouts to get a look at some guys on tryout that they think might be deserving of a contract. Do you seriously think Sather and Clark and Gorton sit and put together this roster trying to build a "good" team?

Folks are hockey starved and want to see our prospects in action. We don't get to see that much. The Rangers haven't had a prospect in the ECAC since Dylan Reese, that I remember. Local area hockey gets us limited exposure.

Beyond that all we get is the world juniors.

Which is fair. I understand wanting to see McIlrath or someone else for selfish reasons and that it's a lot sexier than some unsigned OHL guy on a tryout. But people need to stop pretending that it's an mistake on an executive level or that Brady Skjei doing skating drills with the Minnesota coaching staff instead of Ken Gernander is going to stunt his growth.

Exactly. While I barely care whether or not the Rangers prospects win games in this tournament, I watch to see the prospects play. If they aren't there, I can't watch them.

Kristo and the 2 Swedes are the most interesting players. Those were the players identified by Gordie Clark back in June as players who could play on the Rangers this season. Kristo could get his chance with Callahan and Hagelin out for the first few weeks. Ulf Samuelsson was raving about the two Swedes when he spoke to Cerny a few weeks ago.

A few things:

1. McIlrath and Miller could absolutely use this experience. Neither of them are dominant AHL players. Neither of them would dominate this tournament either. Fast and Lindberg are both better players at this point. I have no complaints about Skjei and Nieves not being there.

2. It would mean much less if other teams weren't bringing their pros to this tournament. But as it stands, they all did.

3. What Fitzy said.

RB, do you have that interview with Ulf?

we brought alot of slop to this tourney and as fans of the rangers we want to see kids that actually have a shot to be actual rangers. not kids of friends of sather's.

i dont care about jt barnett

much rather that spot have gone to a kid with an actual nhl future in front of him

one guy i am interested in seeing is anthony duclair lot of talent

3. What Fitzy said.

1. Fast and Lindberg being better players is irrelevant. Again, it's about introducing them to the franchise and the coaching staff. To break the ice so to speak. Miller and McIlrath popped that cherry long ago. Training camp and the pre-season will be the time to evaluate them against each other from a competitive standpoint.

2. Who cares what other teams do? Call me crazy, but I'd guess that the guys paid to be involved in the inner workings of our team and basically stalk these guys the entire year know who needs what far better than the armchair GMs of HFBoards.

3. What Fitzy said is a good excuse for being disappointed that certain players aren't showing up from a personal standpoint. Not from a "management made the wrong decision" standpoint. I get wanting to see a McIlrath for personal reasons. I don't get pretending to know better than management whether it makes sense for McIlrath to attend.

This exchange pretty much sums it all up. Would I have liked to have seen McIlrath on the roster? No doubt. But only for selfish reasons. Heck, remember he got hurt in rookie camp last year. No need to expose him or anyone else that management already has a good bead on and who they already know they're going to give a long look in camp.

Honestly, I think the only reason that Fast and Lindberg are there are due to the fact that they play overseas and management a) wants them to get as much exposure to the smaller ice surface as possible and b) quite frankly most of the staff haven't had a chance to watch them much in person; were those two guys NA players, I doubt they'd be there either given their accomplishments to date.

Still, the forward contingent looks good. The D... not so much. How many of those guys are on NHL contracts - four?

They care because this is a reflection of where our current prospect pool stands (with a few exceptions) and how those players stack up against other organizations. In the grand scheme of things, the tournament is meaningless, but at the same time, it's important to see these kids matched up against higher quality competition. It brings the potential future of the organization together, and if they get shellacked, it reflects badly on them as well as the people who put the team together.

If you think Clark and Gorton don't care about fielding a competitive team, then you're just kidding yourself.

This makes sense... for younger prospects, guys who've played very few pro games and guys who haven't played in NA.

There is no reason to bring Dylan McIlrath (who's already played in it once, got loads of ice time in HFD last year after his return) or J.T. Miller (who played tons of games with the big club last year), both of whom we already know will get lots of PT in big league camp.

My understanding is different re the NCAA kids - its true about summer Dev Camp that they just need to pay their own way. But NCaA kids are not allowed to play formal games against pros, and my understanding is that's why they don't play here. Otherwise ncaa guys like nieves who play or live in the state of michigan would be common at TC

They care about fielding a competitive team in that they hope what they have to work with is an inherently able and competitive group. They're not going to make roster decisions based on what will "win" us the tournament. If we totally crap the bed on the scoreboard but Jimmy Oligny does enough to earn a contract and eventually work his way up to the NHL level while Lindberg, Fast, and Kristo are a few weeks ahead in adapting and getting comfortable then it was a success.

Our prospect pool doesn't become better or worse because McIlrath did/didn't participate in the tournament.

Doesn't it have more to do with the fact that classes have already started and they're not supposed to make a farce out of the whole student/athlete thing (leaving aside the debate of whether it already is a farce) by blowing those off for reasons exclusively tied to their athletic pursuits?

Now you're accusing me of saying things other people posted.

I never criticized managements judgement. I said I was disappointed in my OP, and I think our team is going to struggle in the tournament.

It matters what other teams do because they ALL are bringing guys with pro experience. Buffalo for example is bringing Pysyk, Grigorenko, Girgensons. All of these guys have been in the organization and met the coaching staff plenty of times. Pysyk has 20 NHL games under his belt, and Grigs has a bunch as well. Zack Phillips has spent 70 games with the Houston Aeros coaching staff.

An introduction to the Rangers organization would be great if other teams were doing the same thing. They're not, so why should the Rangers?

It's probably a combination.

Regardless, nobody should have been expecting Skjei, Nieves of Buchnevich. That was a pipe dream.
